[Solved] Mystery 10K Appears in Home Loan

Asking for a friend, yesterday an amount of approx 10.5k appeared in her home loan.

We believe it's not an accidental transfer from another person but not 100% sure, transfers from another account show a from account number but this one only shows a receipt number. The description on the transfer says Hardship.

The loan is fixed so she's not able to redraw it but it looks as though the 10.5k is similar to a principle reduction rather than an extra payment available to redraw, but she's not sure since she has never paid extra into this loan.

The reduction in principle equates to about $1.35 in interest per day in her favor.

Bank phone queue advised of a long queue due to covid and she doesn't have time to call between business hours.

What should she expect next and what should she do?

Just wait it out until contacted. DO NOT try to spend it

    • Thanks, she can't spend it anyway because available redraw still shows 0. I think because you can't redraw from fixed loans.

  • Someone will be looking for it soon enough… so as chartparker said DO NOT SPEND IT.

  • Let it sit there, don't touch it until clarification is sought from the bank.

Someone accidentally transferred their superannuation hardship withdrawal into your friends home loan account.

    Edit: just saw 10.5k. Disregard.

    • It's about 10.5k though, I thought super redraw was capped at 10k?

      • Yeah. I edited after I put my glasses on.

You mean after you painted your glasses on.

    Any casino's still open?

I think it's mine. Ask friend to send it to me.

  • What bank does your friend bank with?

Asking because saw the news about Me bank used customer’s money in redraw account to pay down customer’s mortgage without asking

    • ING, there was no money in the redraw to pay it down in the first place.

Some bloke name Hard is wondering where the $10.5k for his hip operation went.

  • Bank might have stuffed up and put it there by mistake. Either ignore it or report to the bank.

  • I once had $40,000 deposited into my account too.

Having read up on other similar stories, as others have said, don't spend it! It can trigger criminal proceedings by the police.

In my case, I contacted the bank to inform them of the mystery money.

    • Had a similar thing happen when I bought a house. Settlement day came, conveyancer gave me the keys, deposit was still in my bank account… where it stayed for two weeks until it finally disappeared.

  • Report it to the bank ASAP. Get them to call the second the line opens in the morning.

  • Bank phone queue advised of a long queue due to covid and she doesn't have time to call between business hours.

Does bank have either a chat option, call back option or other secured contact option? Many banks have a secure contact option on the full website once logged in.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago, ended up with 300k.
I just left it and the bank eventually noticed.
Don’t let your friend be one of those people that spend it all and wonder why they should pay it back when the bank comes knocking.

    • Did you keep the interest at least?

  • Ignore it. Pretend you never saw it. Delete your post and any evidence that you were aware it happened.
