Plot twist: Ted's buying team all signed up and snaffled the free ones; now reselling them.

    • Haha! That actually crossed my mind as I was posting but I resisted mentioning it.

Plot twist #2: Only a magician can get this microphone to properly work.

        I hear you…

        • +4

I dont think you can hear me, I can't seem to get it working

      • +2

are you using it with iDevice ? might need a TRS to TRRS adapter ie Rode SC4.

        • +1

Surface laptop, Dell laptop, Lenovo laptop and desktop pc. All no go.

          • @cheaponos: Desktop too, tried all mic holes, none works, alien squeak is all that gets through this device. I guess it needs a converter of some type

          • @cheaponos: Works fine with my Lenovo plugged directly in

Took me a little while to figure this out as I have no audio experience.

If you're using it in a device with 1 x 3.5mm input port that has earphone and microphone input, you'll need an adapter or microphone / audio splitter. Make sure it goes from TRS female to a TRRS male 3.5mm jack. I got a cheap $3 one off ebay

Reason why: laptop takes TRRS and microphone is TRS. TRS mic doesn't work in TRRS female jack. If you look at your male jack, 2 coloured rings is TRS and 3 is TRRS.

I got the split audio mic so I can hear myself through the headphones when I speak. Took even longer to figure out how to fix the sound delay though…

          Huh? What?
          Just get a USB one.

          • +1

@congo: Waste of a usb port if you've got a perfectly fine functioning mic like this

        • +2

On my XPS13, if I plug in a mic with just a TRS connector, the sound card will ask what I have plugged in. When I select Mic In, the mic will work. Mine is a Rode VideoMic Go.

        • +1

Its also stereo - so actually requires dedicated TRS to work normally. Thus a usb soundcard/dedicated mic input. In most situations it wont bother people- but by using a TRRS socket you're connecting one of the internal mics… Not a big deal.

      • Mine works fine on my custom built tower PC, but only after I REMOVED the battered powered power module. With the power module, even with the battery inserted correctly and turned on, almost completely killed the output.

        Works fine in Discord.

This product is designed to be used with a dedicated mic socket (remember the old green headphones/pink microphone layout). Solution at the very bottom, technical explanation if you're interested.

Are you using with a device with only one 3.5mm socket? Two sockets isnt common these days. The reason these were free is because these configurations are only common on a desktop computer these days. It probably wasnt worth the trouble for Rode.

        Visual diagram: https://ibb.co/YRQDpM7

If only one 3.5mm socket it is likely TRRS/4 poles/3 lines on the connector. Look at wired phone headset. TRRS = Tip Ring Ring Shield. Think of it was left, right, shield, mic.

When using stereo headphones with no mic (TRS/2 lines) (think of it as left right shield) the second ring on the 3.5mm socket doesnt engage - so only audio out but no audio in. Funnily enough Android and Apple phones are configured slightly differently in some cases - which is why you might see wired headsets saying "apple only" or "Android only". This is due to the circuit layout within the same connector.

The reason this mic has a TRS connector is because theres two microphones inside (its stereo). That means this can NEVER work with a standard headphone socket (they never provision for 2 mic inputs). Just as your headphones have a left/right - this microphone has a left/right. Thus it needs the dedicated "pink" socket.

You can get a cheap little USB sound card off ebay. I have one of these and they work well.

    https://www.teds.com.au/audio-technica-at9903-lavalier-lapel…

Their lapel version also cheap, $49.95. RRP ~$80, some places, eg umart, selling $69 with '20% discount'!

Note that this lapel needs to be connected to your recording device by wire.

    • I find most lapel ones to be quite soft. Not sure how good this one is.

    • Any idea if this would suffice as a pc mic for gaming?

      • You better with the past deals from Edifier :)

The free ones…. I ordered one, no idea from where and when it will arrive LOL
    Anyone else received it?

    • I did

    • Yep

    • +2

I ordered one too, never received any further correspondance. I'm assuming that not all orders were successful.

      • +6

I got an email saying it's sold out and my missus got no communication at all.

    • +3

Received mine today after being notified on the 9th of April that I would receive one.

    • +5

      Nope. Just crickets.

      • Never received mine either.

    • Mine arrived yesterday, despite having an error at checkout and the site crashing thereafter…still scratching my head for being lucky…luck is mostly not on my side…

    • +1

I got mine today. Was pleasantly surprised considering I got an email a month ago saying they couldn't send one and offered me a coupon.

      • I got that voucher email too! Hope they have a spare for me :p

This does not work with Mac or any windows laptop
Not sure where it can actually made to work

      Commodore64 with cassette drive.

    • It has a power module having battery. Then it works. You can see it in the picture above.

    • How can people not use this? Connect it to the little battery box if you don't have phantom power. Plug into your device.

    • Works fine on my Lenovo T470S. My audio out is through my screen and have this connected into the combined speakers/mic 3.5mm jack

    • See my comment above

Might be a dumb question but is this a mic I can plug into my phone's headphone jack to record?

I'd like to record playing music (piano) so I want the phone to use the condenser mic instead of the phone's internal crappy mic when recording videos.

    • +7

Yes, but you most likely will need a splitter

      • Oh cool didn't know those existed, thanks mate!!

    • Imo you're better off with a midi device. I have a roland one.

  • hard to find much info on this, can anyone who has one give us a test of the mic quality?

    • I received one through the promotion, myself and others that received one too have found it to be very quiet, even with mic boost at max. I've only tested it on my desktop though.

      • +1

        Was the mic powered?

        • Yep

      • May be because of some sort of phasing/ cancellation due to internal wiring of your socket, see above.

  • Thanks OP, can confirm that the $10 signup voucher was also applied successfully, even though it says not for sale items

#deadset - perfect OzBargain entitled attitude.

Have a free neg you entitled goose.

  • Would have been alright for free, and for my desktop WFH setup.
I don't have a camera anyway so perhaps a webcam would be better or just use the laptop and/or mobile phones.
Some bluetooth headphones would do the job.

  • My webcam camera microphone sucks, is there a $10 option as non-intrusive as this? Like iPhone mic quality. Like not a headset or big microphone taking desk space.

    • I use QCY T2C earbuds. About $30.

  • "Reduced external noise thanks to metal screen"

    How does that work?

  • Cancelled my order :( oversold their stock
