    IR Blaster

Gd to see some phones are still supporting it, may be people in china still use IR a lot on mobiles, shame on Samsung to ditch it

    • +2

Yeah they're still pretty big around Asia and most Xiaomi phones have it still thankfully.

      • There are only 2 major phone companies that still make IR blasters. Xiaomi and Huawei. The day the stop making affordable phones with IR blasters, I'll move on to Nokia or something.

    • Best feature on my Mi A1 for when going away for work so I don't need to use the hotel remote.
      Should be on all phones.

    • That's odd. GsmArena says no IR blaster (https://m.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_note_10_lite-10183.php). The Geekbuying link does say it does have IR blaster though..

      • +1

I double check all my specifications with mi.com

  • Any deals on Mi 9T ?

  • +3

been holding out for this, but for $70 more from Kogan the Mi Note 10 seems a much better buy.

    • -4

Everything from kogan is either crap or dodgy or both

      • +4

It's from Xiaomi not Kogan. Kogan are just the importers.

        • -2

Woosh…. I was responding to freefall not the OP.

  • Is MiBox 4k (announced today) sames as Mi Box S?

    • From what I've seen it is. Essentially the Mi Box S with Android 9, a more stock Android TV interface and being launched in India.

    • yes it is.

  • +1

    No wireless charging..

  • Hi op, can you do deal for Redmi Note 9S?

  • What phone do you guys recommend for around $250?

    • I would try to buy a 2 or 3 years old flagship in decent condition (2nd hand).. try to find a decent s8 or s9..there are lots of options for new phones with that price range, all of them have more or less same specs.. Oppo/Samsung/ Nokia.. Goodluck

      • +5

Problem with an S8 or S9 is that you're gonna get an old battery and the battery is sealed and glued in and almost impossible to replace.

    • +3

      Samsung A20.

    • +1

There's a few good phones for the money around that price point, Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T, Oppo A5, Samsung Galaxy A20, Realme 5/5i.

Here's a site I used to find what phone I wanted with my budget. I ended up going with the Umidigi F1 over the A20.

      Phone Finder

      • The A20 is apparently dog slow & worth spending the extra for A30.

        • It's a big jump in price from an A20 for $179 + $6 unlock to an A30, unless you can find it on special.

          • @Arthur Dunger: Yeah, as it was when I was buying, but if I had known about Samsung education store my purchase could've changed.

So if you have access to Samsung education with any education email: Universities,College,Primary & High school. A30 is $265 there, with $50 off $250 you can get it to $215 delivered.

    • @ Sutra For $250 a Redmi note 8T has NFC and B28

  • +1

this vs the oppo reno 5g? both around the same price

    • +2

Oppo Reno 5G all the way IMO. Has a flagship Snapdragon 855 CPU, 2GB extra RAM, double the storage, 5G and no notch. Also a local 2-year warranty (good luck reaching out to Xiaomi/Geekbuying after 6-months).

Color OS isn't for everyone though and you might be waiting a bit for Android 10.

      • Couldn't agree more. It's not even a close comparison plus you can just go to your local HN store and pick it up immediately. Shipping from China is gonna take about 1 month, if not longer given the current problems we're facing.

Color OS isn't great, but MIUI also has its fair share of problems.

        • +3

MIUI is great imo. Rom flashers usually bag it but dont give a reason.

          • @Cheeper: Yeah, I like it. First stock ui I've settled with. As long as you get global, you get it good. Chinese Rom is trash outside of China

    • Oppo reno 5G cost almost 3 times.

  • +2

I've got the Mi 9 Lite, mostly a good phone with a brilliant screen and battery life. Camera is poor and google camera does not work properly on it. Having gone from the original Google Pixel to this, its a huge camera downgrade. Not sure about the 10 but on the 9 "lite" means a poor camera.

    • I'm pretty sure the whole Mi 9 series have the same Sony IMX586 48MP sensor

  • +1

so basically this phone is similar with Mi note 10 without 108mpx & macro lens.(btw both is android 10 as mi note 10 is been updated recently)

    https://m.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9945&idPhone2=1…

  • If I was going to lose the 108mp camera, May as well buy Mi 9T from Banggood. Same spec except 6.39 screen and 48MP camera. US$288 with code BG59T28

    • +1

Megapixel count is not indicative of a good camera.

      • I did not say that 108mp module is a great camera. The same to 64mp vs 48mp.

To word this in another way, as others has point out. I wouldn't mind spend another A$70 to get the Mi note 10 from Kogan to have that 108mp camera. Or save myself another us$70 and get the 9T from Banggood.
And for the same amount of money, we have the Reno 5G deal.

So I just don't see how this can be a deal!

    • Banggood - It says cannot be shipped to destination country (Australia), buying options are disabled?

      • Yeah their HK warehouse isn't shipping to Australia.

    • I think they’re related to that Eneloop company…whatever they make.

    • Been popular around here for many years. Possibly the top selling phone in China & India who have a much higher volume market. You can buy them from online aust retailers and instore at JB hifi. I dont know of any phone that is not made in China these days?
If you want to know more type xiaomi phone into google and you will get 854,000,000 results

        LG, South Korea.
        ASUS, Taiwan.

        • +4

Japanese brands are also moving out of China soon for good, so there's that.

    • +3

Xiamoi is a huge Chinese brand and they make every sort of product you can think of. Over there they have multi floor department stores selling only Xiamoi products, it's massive.

    • +1

Yes, it is a Chinese brand that steals the intellectual properties of other major brands and makes a profit off that. A portion of this money of course also goes to the CCP, which isn't really the shining beacon of democratic values that our society is built on.

Xiomai's stealing of intellectual property is not unlike that of most other Chinese brands. This sort of thing is state sanctioned there, and they've been doing it for decades. They won't have a cent of my money again, ever.

      • +1

When a company is big enough,CCP will have a hand in the company and most company in China does not care about IP. You won’t be anything if you go by that logic

      • +1

Yeah but thats how most powerful economies started out, the British, the French, the US, the Germans, the Japanese, all got rich by stealing other countries IP/ideas and making it themselves.

Eventually they get strong enough and start inventing their own ideas/products.

        • proof?

there is massive evidence of cina stealing ip's

where is your proof of other doing the same?

  • +5

    Comes with free CCP tracking

    • +5

      You're not wrong

I wouldn't touch Xiaomi with a barge pole right now.

      • +1

Well what phone would you touch considering almost every manufacturer has been accused of the same thing in recent times?

    • +9

Don't know why you're being downvoted.

      But it's true.

All corporations in China work for the CCP.

      • +5

It's well known in China that if you 'choose' to 'donate' a 50% share of your business to the state, that they will remove red tape or any other impediment to getting on with business.

        • -1

Well figure out a biz and get on with it . The 50% is worth it!

    • +1

Well, you can either enjoy the tracking from PRISM or CCP. Dont tell me you really believe apple or google dont share their data with five eye?

    • Also comes with a tin foil hat too

  • +6

I've never trusted tech from China, they always overtly spy on you.

If you like your privacy somewhat then be careful of these phones.

    • +9

      This.

I also can't understand the hype around Huawei phones. Yeah the specs are high, and they're cheap, but they are a state owned enterprise - an enterprise that threatens economic coercion on their 'friends' and is known for infiltrating any institution to exert influence.

      • +6

The CCP stooges are on overdrive with neg voting as if that will change our minds. How helplessly pathetic. :)

      • -2

They aren't a state owned enterprise. A quick google search shows they are a private company.

        • +2

A quick baidu search shows that they're affiliated to the communist party.

          • @CocaKoala: Mate, I'm not getting into a political argument here, I'm just saying that they aren't a state owned enterprise, so you shouldn't say they are a state owned enterprise. Idgaf if you buy huawei or not, but people shouldn't be spreading info that just isn't true.

            • +1

              @kantspel:

you shouldn't say they are a state owned enterprise

I said they're affiliated to the communist party, which is very different.

It's likely that you meant to respond to someone else here.

Idgaf if you buy huawei or not

Here's our common ground: Idgaf at all about what you gaf about.

        • +2

The CCP doesn't have to 'own' you, to own you.

          https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2019/04/25/tech…

          • -3

@Lets Make Sandwiches: I'm not making claims that the government doesn't have influence, governments all over the world have influence over the companies in their nation. I'm just saying your claim that Huawei is a "state-owned enterprise" is false.

    • +12

Xiaomi announced an opt out mode coming soon or you could even just use a different browser instead of the Mi Browser like Chrome and you won't have that problem.

Google isn't any better, Apple or really any other company or government agency as they're all spying on us in some way and that's been well known for a very long time. Google would probably have the most amount of information and you can even see your movements quite easily if you're opted in for timeline. Even without they can still track your location and search habits as well as anything else with a GApps Android phone.

Same applies to Facebook and you can even see the thousands of apps and websites that share your information.

      • There's no such thing as privacy these days, whether it's by you unknowingly accepting for your data to be sent or companies trying to take your data without your knowledge.

However, I still feel somewhat more at ease that my data is with other government and companies rather than with the Chinese government

        • +4

Yes that's my point. There is no privacy so it's a wonder these people get surprised 😉 Comes down to if you want China or Australia and their partners.

          • +8

@Clear: Well I choose no to China, and so do many Australians. They can't be trusted. They quite openly have ambitions to take over Taiwan, and building artificial reefs with military capability in the south china sea to take over asia.

Yeah, I'll take google or apple any day over the CCP.

            • -2

@Lets Make Sandwiches: Which will include US, UK, NZ, CA and sometimes Singapore, Japan and Israel 😉

Doesn't matter to me either way. I'm Australian and I can see what both sides are doing.

              • +1

                @Clear:

Doesn't matter to me either way.

Look, what people have been trying to tell you here is that it does matter to them. They don't want to contribute to the $$ reserves of the ccp and that they don't want to be spied upon by the ccp.

                • +1

@CocaKoala: There is nothing to tell me when it is painfully obvious what you think because you've said it and negged it. That's how OzBargain works… you upvote if you think it's good, you don't vote if it doesn't apply to you and you neg if you think it's a bad deal.

You've made your point and I'm not denying your point. I've just elaborated on the fact that it's happening everywhere. If you're in any of the Five Eyes countries then that's the countries your data gets shared with. Potentially the 3 others I mentioned. Or is that wrong?

Keep it civil. I'm not trying to disagree with you.

                  • -2

                    @Clear:

here is nothing to tell me when it is painfully obvious what you think because you've said it and negged it. That's how OzBargain works

I'll tell what I want, when I want. That's how democracy and free speech works.

You've made your point and I'm not denying your point. I've just elaborated on the fact that it's happening everywhere

I've understood it's probably happening everywhere, but it doesn't stop me from letting you know that I still don't want a chinese company affiliated with the communist regime to be spying on me. I don't care if someone else spies on me - it just can't be an authoritarian regime.

Keep it civil. I'm not trying to disagree with you.

I've not exhibited any uncivlised behaviour, so it's not making any sense that you're asking me to be civil.

                    • -1

                      @CocaKoala:

I'll tell what I want, when I want. That's how democracy and free speech works.

You misquoted out of context. That's how OzBargain works… you upvote if you think it's good, you don't vote if it doesn't apply to you and you neg if you think it's a bad deal. - That's OzBargain's rules regarding voting. No idea why you're bringing up democracy and free speech. It's unrelated.

Besides I don't get your hostility? I know you don't want spying from China, I know you don't like this deal, I know you've negged the deal and I haven't said anything that disagrees with you. It makes no sense.

                      • -2

                        @Clear:

                        You misquoted out of context.

Not really, because you told me that there was nothing for me to tell you - I'll be the judge of what I will or won't tell you - that's free speech.

Besides I don't get your hostility?

What hostility? You were the one asking me to be civil, and are now claiming I'm hostile, both of which are unwarranted.

                        • +2

                          @CocaKoala:

That's right. You've made your point clear on why you don't like this deal and I understand that. I simply explained how voting works and you've voted correctly.

                          • -2

@Clear: It should have stopped with you understanding, but it extended into you telling me that there was nothing for me to tell you - you'll not be deciding that latter part.

                              @CocaKoala: Freedom of speech.

@Clear: Your freedom of speech cannot not silence me or impinge on my freedom of speech. I suggest reading up on that. Also, I am fully aware of how voting works as I was born into a democracy and don't need explanations on that, thank you.

                                • @CocaKoala: Good that we agree. Have a nice weekend :)

                                  • -1

@Clear: Great, looks like you read up on that or else you'd have debated. Enjoy your weekend, free speech, and democracy, and our great ways of life. Stay free from any unwanted viruses. :-)

                                    • @CocaKoala: Hard to when you're a healthcare worker involved with the COVID clinics ;)

                                      • @Clear: Just a heartfelt thanks for working to keep our community safe! I cannot stress this enough. Do stay healthy mate! My partner is a healthcare worker too, and has been working through the f**$*% pandemic.

            • @Lets Make Sandwiches: Look, i know australian government spy on us, but if i get a choice,i'd rather the chinese do the spying cause they live in another country and their jurisdiction and legislation is different to us, so whatever we do, they can't really do anything except collect data

            • +2

@Lets Make Sandwiches: Already taken Tibet, claiming some easter border parts currently in India, South China sea and list goes on…

            • +1

@Lets Make Sandwiches: Then should we just stop trading with the Chinese altogether? Our 57 billion trade surplus with China and many Australian jobs should just be cancelled altogether right? We need China because they buy our shit and boost our economy. Put down your tin foil hat and learn something would ya.

    • +5

      Then enjoy PRISM, US made.

      • Why would you want to buy US made when we already have a 27 billion trade deficit with them? Buy Australian and support Australia.
