  • Is this worth getting if you already have 2K19? Besides the new players on new teams of course

    • -2

The game seems to get worse each year so I'd stick with 2K19 and just download an updated roster. Although for $7 you can see for yourself.

      • +3

Disagree, doesnt get worse every year. I wouldnt say no to another feature mode like the MJ mode in 2K11, but still a great basketball SIM. If you like online play you'll get a larger player base with 2K20.

      • i wouldnt say it gets worse but it sure isnt getting any better. im still playing 2K18 and was gonna wait until at least 2K21 before i would consider a new version, but for a 10-pack of McNuggets, i'll pick this up

        • +12

At Ozbargain we only buy 24 nuggies for $9.95

      • I didn't know you could download updated rosters for past versions! Always thought that as soon as the new version came out, rosters stopped updating on the previous year's game.

        • +1

They have stopped. Any rosters you can download are reliant on servers remaining open and users generating and uploading rosters based off the next game

    • +1

Yep worth the $7.50, if you like NBA, at this price it is a no brainer.

    • +1

You wouldn't see the difference if you see someone playing 2k19 and 2k20 side by side, that's how little the improvement is. Seems like they spent most of their time with the WNBA content.
That said, dribbling/ball handling has significantly improved and you feel like you have more control of player's movements.
For this price, I would definitely get it.

      • Spot on, although content may be similar you get the updated roster and and improvement to game mechanics.

    • +2

Respectfully disagree with people saying this isn't any different to/better than 2K19.

The reason this game got critism (and rightfully so) was that it strongly encourages microtransactions when it comes to modes like MyCareer/MyTeam.

From a gameplay perspective though, it always improves year on year. It always feels like more of a basketball sim than the previous years release.

I'm a huge NBA fan and like the x's and o's moreso than the casual sports video game fan, so I can completely understand why people may not notice some of the more subtle and nuanced changes to the game.

I really enjoy the game, but when it comes to MyCareer you definitely either have to a) put in a lot of hours or b) pay for VC to expedite character upgrades.

    • Better worth if it was free, along with Fifa

  • What's the price of 2k19? Actually prefer it to this

    • it was USD $2.99

  • Thought i was seeing things when i saw 3 NBA 2K20 deals on front page

  • +1

Ordered from Amazon over the weekend for $49
I guess I have to organise a return

    • +5

Still think for this price if you want to play it as a sports game and not a virtual life simulator, then it's not the worst thing in the world

  • Who is going through these comments negging everyone?

    • +8

Likely a salty troll who paid full price recently.

      • haha somebody who has just ticked over their refund/exchange policy threshold

  • +2

it's a good game for the price man, still a good 3-4 months left to go too.

    thanks OP

  • +2

Would make a nice addition to my pile of shame…

  • +2

Buy more controller, in case 2k makes you rage.

  • +6

Bought this game for around $39 earlier in the year.
If you're up for a grind in single player, it is fun levelling your characters stats and slowly dominating the league. Although this takes a LONG time to do without microtransactions. The biggest flaw in the single player game is that its all geared around getting you to spend money online.
However the local multiplayer can be pretty fun, so for $7.50 its worth it. Please don't buy VC and perpetuate their crappy buisness model.

    • -5

It's a shame you have mindless consumers who are too enamoured with the commercialist culture that surrounds basketball (the games especially) who can and will buy VC year in and year out and justify it by "avoiding the grind".

Edit: Saying this as someone who has played basketball at a representative level for over 10 years and been witness to people who base people's status upon whose name is on their shoes

      • +2

        Damn. People love their capitalism

        • +1

Maybe people like choice, not everyone has all day to grind for VC.

          • +2

@eggaz: "Choice" that has intentionally been implemented into a game to push people towards spending money. It's a classic consumerist trap which is why these games have been reviewing so poorly with users in metacritic for years

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the 2k games for their gameplay, but I would never invest in their VC for a character that I'll get to use for a few months before the next game comes out and do the whole things again

          • +5

@eggaz: If people didn't buy VC there wouldn't be a grind is what he is saying. The grind was added to sell the VC. They aren't offering you a choice by selling VC, they are taking it away when they made the horrendous grind and removed cheat codes from the modern games.

Now you pay for the cheat codes each time you use them and the game publishers LOVE it. They even have the people they have duped defending them.

            • +2

              @PiratePete1911: Perfectly worded.

            • +1

@PiratePete1911: I'll start by saying I have never purchased VC, nor do I have any intent to. I understand what you're saying, however the challenge of earning attributes and VC is part of the game, building your player over time, even if you buy VC there is still a grind, from what I unserstand you can only spec out your player to a certain point before you need to grind through the rest of the upgrades. If people want to spend their hard earned $ on upgrading their virtual character and buying digital shoes they can go right ahead, it's their choice. If you don't want to then steer clear. I happily play online and MyPlayer without any need to spend real world $.

              • -1

@eggaz: You're again missing the point.

VC is only the in-game element used to upgrade your player so that it can be quantified in a similar way to real life money.

It doesn't need to be the method of upgrade and could instead offer a similar progression system to most modern RPGs in the form of skill points to enhance your player's "tree".

There is no reason the developers could not implement this method apart from predatory capitalistic gains that can be had at the hands of users who want an easy leg up in online competition. If that becomes successful in one game, suddenly the formula becomes much more heavily focused on the monetary side of upgrades rather than rewarding users for a time investment through playing in each subsequent release.

                • +1

@Ninternet: I haven't missed your point, I understand, and I don't agree with micro transactions and don't buy into it. The core gameplay doesnt require me to buy VC and 2K has not forced me to buy any VC, when this becomes the case I will have an issue with it. The consumer still has the choice to invest time into it, if you have it, or buy some VC and upgrade, it's up to the consumer. For me I don't care as it doesnt impacted my gaming experience.

In addition, if they were not making money off the micro transactions we may not see deals like this pop up half way through the release cycle.

                  • +1

@eggaz: "The consumer still has the choice to invest time into it, if you have it, or buy some VC and upgrade"

That's the thing though I don't want to grind, but I don't want to buy their VC because it perpetuates the system.

"In addition, if they were not making money off the micro transactions we may not see deals like this pop up half way through the release cycle."

I think the solution to that is offering a rich single player (and local multi) version separately for a reasonable price. For 2K and Fifa, I don't play online, I don't play any of their pay-to-win card modes, I just want a good single player experience. Unfortunately over the years it has gotten worse because of the whales who spend their pocket money on VC attracting all the development. Make some kind of subscription model for the people who want to blow all their money online.

                    • @Grosey: You can still play MyPlayer, which is single player mode and not purchase any VC at all. The core game mechanics get updated and refined each year so not all $ go the micro transaction development, however, I certainly agree that there are some game modes they could bring back or work on outside of what exists with MyPlayer and MyTeam, for example something similar to the Jordan mode back in 2K11. Unfortunately if your an NBA fan and don't like the current offering you need to suck it and play it for what it is, or go without and hope that EA (although they my be worse for micro transactions) or someone else comes to the party with an NBA game. I believe that if they kept these VC transactions in but offered some alternate game modes there would be more happy 2K fans.

        • +2

People don't like making the connection, if they bought the VC in game then according to you that now makes them mindless consumers, they dont want to accept that they are making the games they love worse so they just neg you.

  • +1

Single mode can't be that bad compared to 2016's Spike Lee joint.

  • Is PS plus required to play online? Currently getting away without it for COD warzone.

    • +2

Yes it is, it says so on the product page too.

  • +5

I remember I bought NBA 2k19 for $5 the previous year and even then I still feel ripped off. If you're after a game that has nothing but micro transactions and requires you to spend money to be competitive online with gameplay getting worse every year, then this game is for you!

THEY PUT ADS IN THE GAME AND FORCE YOU TO WATCH IT BEFORE TIP OFF WITH NO WAY TO SKIP IT.

LAST YEAR 2K SENT A STAFF MEMBER INTO THEIR OFFICE ON CHRISTMAS DAY TO DELETE A PINK DIAMOND LEBRON FROM EVERYONES ACCOUNT DUE TO THEIR STUFF UP.

    • its so true, there are so many unskippable cutscenes. There's a reason why the game is this low right now, because 2k is going to put up more ads with an update after sale.

    • Yes 2K19 was a dirty move to put ads in, really low from 2K, glad they're not in 2K20.

    • +1

      EA is Worse than Apple

      • +4

While EA is bad, EA don't make 2k lol

      • I like turtles

  • -1

No they haven't put adds in, what planet are you on? They have a special content clip that talks about the game or NBA while the game loads, it's that our stare at a percentage count, once it hits 100% loaded you can press the button to stay game.

    • +3

2k19 actually did put advertisements in place for HBO and other companies.

There was a hidden option to disable them, but it was definitely a thing that happened.

    • Is that you Ronnie?

  • +1

the initial purchase price is your first micro transaction

    • The way I look at 2K games is: "how much am I willing to pay for new rosters, couch multiplayer or association mode?"

MyPlayer has become a bloated mess of product placement and microtransactions with a below-average "story" to encourage people to continue. Never have I bought a game for this purpose.

For under $10 I can justify the game for the aforementioned reasons especially considering it's still current

      • I only play Association mode, which has received little attention since the game became all about MyPlayer and extorting as much $$$ as they could out of players.

$7 for some couch co-op is a good deal tho. I still think 2k11 and 2k12 were the peak games for fun gameplay

  • Is this the full game or just an add on?

    • Full game

      • +1

        with add on and Ads

  • +2

Damn, wish a deal comes out for PC!

  • Any idea if i previously owned this as a physical copy, sold it a few weeks ago (for $60!!) but still have it installed whether i'll still need to download the full game?

    • nah… no need, just play right away after you buy

    • It probably won't let you buy the digital version of you still have the physical version installed. A really unnecessary caveat that only PlayStation seems to have

    • +1

I wanna know who paid $60!

  • Bought it, now it downloaded corrupt. Should have just passed on it…

    • Uninstall and reinstall..?

    • Same here… took forever to download and halfway through it says data is corrupted…

    • mine also stopped around the halfway mark with an error. i then resumed it through the main menu and it's on 70% now. fingers crossed it completes the download.

  • I wasn't interested in the post; I just voted up for the competition with Xbox version.

    • +2

I only posted so that all were represented. I'll personally be getting this game for my Xbox as it's cheaper and will run better on my X.

There's no need for petty fanboying against the other corporation's plastic computer box.

      • That’s because you know the other plastic computer box is WAY BETTER!!!

    • lol whut, is this really a thing

      • +1

        LMAO that'll show those X BOTS!!1! XD 🤣🤣🤣
Should have bought my favourite gaming system instead lol idiots😂😂💯

  • haven't bought a sports game for console in 10 years? my loaned ps4 is just sitting collecting dust now that i platinumed FF7R. For $7.55, I'll give this a whirl.

  • I wanna be like Mike.

  • Use the money on LIMBO or INSIDE instead.

  • Got the game. But I am so disappointed in the gaming landscape with ads and microtransactions.

Gaming 5-8 years ago and before was the best.

The last game I can think of that reminded me of that era was Spiderman for PS4. I am usually a PC gamer, but seeing BFV and the hackers, and the microtransactions really put me off.

    /rant.

    • Heaps of games are just as good if not better, than what they were 5-8 years ago. You're probably just looking in the wrong places

  • I've been looking to get this for the last month but been umming and arrring because 21 will come out (hoping a KOBE cover - RIP) in a few months but f me, for that price I'm gonna get onto that

  • +1

Noob question, my PS4 500GB ran out of storage - can i install this on external 2.5" HDD and play? will that work?

  • Hi guys

Sorry about my ignorance. But can you play this game offline between 2 players with 2 remotes.

    Thanks

    • Yes you can

  • Nice price. I'm still downloading it as it's some thing like 82GB in size. I'm going to end up running out of space on my second external SSD if i keep getting games this size.

  • Will try in XBOX Games Pass first to see if any better/worse than NBA Live 19 (EA Access on PS4).

    • Purchased. Have not played.

  • Looks like the price has gone back to RRP now. :(
