First year fee waived does not equal "No annual fee" - you need to reword your title

  • +1

did you read the T&C's you posted ???

For ANZ Frequent Flyer an annual account Fee of $49 applies. An annual $10 Additional Cardholder Fee applies per additional cardholder on the account.

it says only the joining fee is waived…

    • This joining fee waiver is offered by ANZ. It is available to new applicants or existing ANZ Frequent Flyer credit card account holders who are not already Qantas Frequent Flyer members and who apply for membership online at qantas.com/joinffanz. This offer is non-transferable and not available in conjunction with any other offer. Qantas Frequent Flyer membership and each application is subject to approval by Qantas.

This clause, according to the rep I spoke to relates to the above.

      EDIT: Amended title

  • $49 for 16k points is alright.

But thing is if you have singed up for one can you get it again??

    • considering you need around 128,000 points for a return trip to Europe, it would cost you around $400… Not too bad…

      • Taxes for that would be around $700 - $800 though.

        • Paid $650 return to London last year (plus baggage & food) so $700 - $800 taxes is too much!

    • +2

It's not terrible…14,500 points will get you a $100 BWS gift voucher for example.

      • +1

        Or a $100 Woolies voucher.

So essentially paying $49 for a $100 Woolies voucher and 1500 points… IF the $49 fee isn't waived that is.

Does anyone know how long ANZ takes to respond? 60 seconds my posterior.

  • so…you have Qantas Frequent Flyer annaul fee,ANZ Frequent Flyer an annual account Fee and Joing Fee??

SO if I apply, what fee i need to pay?

"The 16,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points and $0 annual fee waiver offers apply only once per new ANZ Frequent Flyer account"

"For ANZ Frequent Flyer an annual account Fee of $49 applies"

    • This is what also confused me BUT the rep i spoke to informed me that this $49 account fee will be waved for new applicants.

I've sent her an email and waiting a response.

      FYI found the deal here.
      http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/current-…

these guys seem to think that its also waved for first year.

      • the reason i asked is, i applied this card few days ago and received the welcome pack last night and the offer letter has the $49 annual fee printed and no mention of this being waived. I forgot to bring the welcome pack and the new cards to work as i was going to go to the bank to ask them.

  • So does this mean it could be a free 16,000 points?

  • +1

when completing the online application form, there is additional terms and conditions that state:

"The annual account fee and Rewards Program Service fee will be debited to your account when it is activated (which will appear on your first statement). Within 4 weeks of account activation your account will be credited with the annual account fee and Rewards Program Service fee amounts (which will appear on your second statement). The annual account fee and Rewards Program Services fee will apply to your account for the second and subsequent years. "

You may only need to pay for Qantas FF program application fee if you aren't already a member, or cannot find a free deal out there.

    • Which I believe I have thanks to Woolies, so the only thing we have to do is sign up, hold it for 2 months and then cancel?

      • Yep - that seems to be the case.

      • sounds like it, just use it to buy 3 packs of chips for $5 and cancel it after you recieved the QFF points.

      • "The bonus Qantas Frequent Flyer points will be credited to the cardholder's account within three months of card activation."

Could be three at most but yes…once you get the points, cancel.

        • this sounds almost too good to be true…

  • +1

Does anyone know what effect applying and canceling credit cards when offers like this come around has on your credit rating?

    • My understanding is that only applications for credit are logged (same goes with mobile phone plans, home loans, etc). If you have many of these it looks bad. So, yes and no.

  • This offer also applies to existing ANZ qantas frequent flyer Visa holder. I received the offer in the letter but decided not to upgrade.

EDIT: the 16000 points doesn't apply to existing frequent flyer visa holder

  • I just find out the link above only can earn
1 point per $1 spent on purchases using your ANZ Frequent Flyer American Express® card, to maximise your points earning
1 point per $4 spent on purchases using your ANZ Frequent Flyer Visa card, with the convenience of 29 million locations worldwide
Points2 earned are automatically credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account every month

    but the link below
    http://www.anz.com/Credit-Cards/Frequent-Flyer/classic.asp?s…

    You can earn
1 point per $1 spent on purchases using your ANZ Frequent Flyer American Express® card, to maximise your points earning
1 point per $2 spent on purchases using your ANZ Frequent Flyer Visa card, with the convenience of 29 million locations worldwide
Points2 earned are automatically credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account every month

This is big different for VISA, 1 point per $4 spent compare to 1 point per $2 spent, any one find out?

I can't seems be able to find the link from lonewolf_860 provided, can you please tell us where you find the link from?

    • I found the link here
      http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/current-…

Its apparently a special sent to woolies customers only by email according to the ANZ rep (she even asked me to email it to her as she wasn't sure about its details, only way to apply for it is that link i've given)

Yes you get more points if you apply through ANZ but you have to pay an annual fee etc.

The only purpose of this card is to sign up, get your 16000 points and leave after 2-3 months. There are much better card combos for frequent flyer points out there

Got the card few days ago, earing rate is pretty crap on this. Will cancel this as soon as I get my bonus points.

  • I managed to get the $49 annual fee waived for the last two years, but they didnt want to waive it again for me today. any tips on what to say and how to get it waived this year? might have to do a product transfer to the anz platinum visa that has a $0 annual fee in the first year if they will not budge. Anyway they also have a 2.9% balance transfer for 12 months that ends on 30th Sept. make sure you make a purchase and then bring your account to $0 before doing a balance transfer.

"any tips on what to say and how to get it waived this year?"

Falcon: Welcome to ANZ, my name is Falcon sqwaak
You: Hi Falcon, I have been a long time customer of ANZ (even if you haven't). Unfortunately I would like to close my credit card account as I have been offered annual fee free alternatives elsewhere with similar benefits for earning rewards points. If you could organise my annual fee to be waived for the year my preference would be to remain with ANZ as I am otherwise very happy with the service you provide. It's just that given the current climate, I need to avoid any unnecessary expenditure. Do you think you could help me out?

At this point, one of two things will happen:
      1. Falcon umms, ahhs, pretends to talk to manager, and comes back and says ok, I can arrange or it to be waived for a year ie WIN
      2. Falcon says "no soup (err sorry, I mean help) for you", calls your bluff and beings the termination process. Assuming your annual fee is payable at some point in the future, say end of October, you say, "Hang on a sec, I'm not due to pay the annual fee till end October right? Ok well I'll call back and terminate then. Please leave the card and I'll do it closer to then." You can then try with another rep in a few days or transfer over to the other card you mention.

      Observations:
      1. I have tried the above method on a number of credit cards and banking products with mostly success in the past - sometimes it's worth trying repeatedly as it can boil down to the rep you get.
      2. Dont mention you have already had it waived twice. They can already see this and it does nothing for you.
      3. Always be curteous, and sound helpless, imploring and grateful all at the same time. Appealing on a human level can work wonders :)
      4. Post back here how you go so others can learn too.

  • thanks ccrap for the tips. I took up the 2.9% balance transfer offer since its also available to existing customers so i am in a bit of harder spot as i don't want to close the account for the next 12 months. I will try and call them again tomorrow but during the day time not evening and hopefully ill get someone that's more helpful. BTW I got transferred to 3 different departments today and all were not able to waive the fee for me. I think only a few staff in the retention and complaints depts have the authority to waive the annual fee but they weren't budging unless I had a home loan with ANZ. I was told that a personal loan doesn't meet the criteria to have the annual fee waived and only a home loan with ANZ would have a chance. ref the $49 annual fee, how much of it is the program fee>? I guess I could also ask that they cancel the FF program fee and I just opt to pay the annual fee of about $31 as i don't plan to be use the card for 1 year until i have paid off the full Balance transfer. Does anyone know if you go down the path of transferring the card over to the Anz platinum visa that has a $0 annual fee in the first year that your existing Balance that was transferred at the promo rate 2.9% will be carried over to the new card?

  • I wonder how long it will take to apply/cancel etc then divide by $51 to determine your hourly rate on this deal. 100 points of ID and all that… bit of a pain surely - depends on what your time is worth.

  • +2

ccrap, just letting you know I called again today in the afternoon and followed most of your script and was transferred to a nice lady that was helpful. She brought up my account details and seen i was long time customer. Asked me if it was only the $49 annual fee that was the reason for wanting to cancel the account or if there were any other concerns. I said its just the $49 annual fee concern apart from that I liked the card. Put me on a brief hold and then told me that I was successful in having it waived and invited me to call back next year before the annual is due. I guess it all depends on who you speak too and what you say or the fact that they may of seen the large balance transfer on my account today and figured that they can finally make a little bit of money back from me. however i plan to do some Stoozing with this credit card, get a little small profit hopefully after paying the tax and taking inflation into consideration lol.

    • sounds like a win to me :) well done!

"If you don't ask, then you don't get. If you don't get, then ask again" - ccrap 2011 :)

  • Looking at the T&C's:

"1. New applicants only. The 16,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points and $0 annual fee waiver offers
apply only once per new ANZ Frequent Flyer account"

Ok so this establishes that NEW applicants get a annual fee waiver

    and a joining fee waiver:

"6. This joining fee waiver is offered by ANZ"

Also, correct me if I'm wrong but:

"4. For ANZ Frequent Flyer an annual account Fee of $49 applies."

    Only applies to EXISTING applicants?

  • Signed up yesterday, Approved today. (took some time as I asked for reduced credit limit)
So i'll let everyone know what fees are charged but i'm quite adamant that its free for first year.

  • What a buggered offer. Got emailed by QFF, today, October 4:

With ANZ Frequent Flyer, you'll enjoy the benefits of two
cards on one account. Apply and be approved by 30 September 2011 and you could get:

    • An ANZ Frequent Flyer American Express(R) card, which lets
you earn 1 point for every $1 spent on eligible purchases^,
      and
    • An ANZ Frequent Flyer Visa, which lets you earn 1 point
for every $4 spent on eligible purchases^.
    • $0 annual fee for the first year^ if you are a new ANZ
      Frequent Flyer customer.

The great news is you'll only have one account, one
statement, one credit limit and the same interest rates
    on both cards.

Plus, you could earn a bonus 16,000 points* when you make
an eligible purchase by 11 November 2011.

    * The 16,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points offer and $0
annual account fee Total Annual Fee waiver for the first
year applies only once per new ANZ Frequent Flyer Classic
account and 32,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points offer
applies only once per new ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum
account. You must apply and be approved by 30 September
    2011
to receive the relevant bonus Qantas Frequent Flyer
    points.

    WTF have they been smoking?

  • So I checked out this deal yesterday online first. Then called ANZ and after being transferred around to 3 different people finally found someone who knew about this offer.

They said it was a ANZ QFF lite card where you get less points per dollar spend etc. But given that I wanted the 16k free points with no annual fee I still wanted to sign up. In the end they gave me the normal card with a free annual fee offer and the free 16k points subject to approval etc before 31st of October. This is not the advertised offer but they gave it to me because of the other offer. I think it was easier for the girl to process. The normal card earns more points per dollar spend so was a better deal for me. Basically going to use it to get the points and close it next year before annual fee hits.

Also going to get the Woolworths one to do the same for one year prior to fee hitting. They are giving 5k of points and free annual fee for first year plus you earn more points whilst shopping at Woolworths which is my preferred super market. Added bonus of having all your fuel discount vouchers linked to the card by the barcode on the back.

I may even also go for the Amex one which gets another 7500 points annual fee free for a year. As long as you are disciplined with your cards, which I am, this is basically a free flight or two.

    happy hunting everyone.

    • You should also check out the Bankwest Breeze and use it for 1 year - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/52952

You get 5% cashback on purchases like groceries, petrol and utilities. I'm going to use this card for a year then get rid of it. Normally rewards systems like QFF give you ~0.5% back so 5% back is a lot better.
