  • Good price. $12 shipping to Melbourne.

    Do these fake RAID ok?

    • Haven't heard any reports of the 2TB Hitachi's having issues, not sure about these though.

Main thing would be making sure your system supports 3TB drives..

      • Hmm. Good point!

  • These would go great with the new Star wars Blu ray, Deathstar and all….

And you can scream "Nooooooooooooo!" at them whilst throwing the Emperor to his death.

      • no idea what this means….not a star wars fan…hahah

Years ago, the "Deskstar" range of HDDs had a bad reputation for failing all the time, so they were given the nickname "Deathstars".

And just recently, when they re-released Starwars, again, but this time on BluRay, they'd decided they needed to dub over the scene where the Emperor is zapping Luke. In the old version, Darth Vader just looks on stoically until Darth just snaps and kills the Emperor. In the new version, he yells out "Noooo" like a pansy six or seven times before snapping.

          Learning is fun!

        • better watch all the old star wars movies then…to get all the jokes around star wars…

These are not the Deathstars you are looking for.

I'm surprised they kept the name, as everyone referred to them as this when they were IBM branded (which is also why they are no longer IBM branded).

      • I'm more surprised the tired old "Deathstar" quip is so common after so many years. Pretty much guaranteed one will still eventually appear in any discussion of Deskstar drives.

Well in my immediate family alone I think we lost close to 10 drives when you count returned and repeated failures. You don't forget that kind of thing.

Is this a good hddsk to get?
I'm looking at expanding my storage capacity.

    • It's not a /bad/ drive to get. It's not going to break any speed records but there isn't anything wrong with it. Note however not all operating systems cope with drives >2TB well.

      • OSes or Mobos? or both?

        • Only OS.

    • They seem to run really hot compared to other 7200rpm drives. Unfortunately my 2tb Hitachi from 15months ago died a few backs. Not to say its bad, if had failures under all brands.

  • Direct link? I can only find for $174

    • Seems to have been removed. I've added them to my shopping cart but it gives me an error when I click checkout.

Interesting - looks like it's gone. Pricing error maybe?

    • Just paid with paypal for 2, got email for payment confirmation too :)

  • Not bad a bad price.. I just bought a WD Green 2TB for $83 which I am happy with..

When that is full, I will get a larger drive even cheaper.

  • +1

Would be a good deal if they still had it!

Shifty, cant check out with my $129 purchase, but can checkout with the $174 purchase, same drive, neg from me

    • -2

Looks like they updated the price when the item was in your basket… unlucky mate.

  • Why did these guys have it so cheap? Is this a sign of a drop in 3TB drives in the near future? fingers crossed
