ASUS VG259Q 24.5'' FHD Freesync IPS 144hz Gaming Monitor $379 @ Officeworks

222

This is one of best quality 24.5'' FHD IPS 144hz monitor and currently at a decent price though not the lowest it has been but it is the current lowest price and in stock and if you purchase before 31 of May ASUS is giving away a $20 Steam gift card for this monitor via redemption website link. At the time of posting it is currently in stock in store only in VIC, NSW and QLD with multiple stores showing stock.

Comparing this ASUS monitor with the popular best budget 144hz IPS monitor AOC 24G2 which the price for AOC is now siting around $309 to $329 which makes the ASUS a bit more attractive price point being only 15% to 25% more expensive for in my opinion a slightly higher quality AU Optronics panel compared to the Panda Panel.

The pros of the ASUS VG259Q compared to the AOC 24G2 are:

  • I believe the ASUS has faster response times compared to the AOC 24G2 someone on Reddit did a small review on this monitor and found it had really good response times.
  • The AU Optronics panel has better viewing angels compared to the Panda panel.
  • Has higher brightness at around 400 cd/m2 compared to 250 cd/m2 of AOC monitor.
  • Has built in speakers for those that like low quality speaker included in their monitors.

Some cons of the ASUS VG259Q are:

  • Apparently there is some issues with sharpness on text though I have not noticed this though maybe could be type to not notice it. Though I believe sharpness issues can be fixed by adjusting vividpixel and sharpness settings because ASUS chose bad default settings.
  • Is only a sRGB display so does not have a wider colour gamut as the AOC though might be preferred by those who rather have standard sRGB calibration rather than default inaccurate wide gamut monitor. I believe has lower colour accuracy and some units might have some colour issues with green though from my impression it looks nice enough for gaming and general usage.
  • The bezels are bigger than the AOC bezel, so AOC looks a bit better for multiple monitor setup.
  • Has an external power supply personal preference I prefer monitors to have built in power supply having it weight slightly heavier than a monitor with an external power brick where the power supply could get damaged or cord broken.

Not really worth is when you can get the AOC G2 27" for $300

    • +3

      Link?

      • -7

Got it during an eBay 20% off
        Price was $375 - 20% = $300

Was just having quick browse of AOC monitors and found out that AOC is their own Steam gift card promotion for monitor similar to ASUS though a bit more generous which started at 23/05/2020 and ends on 15/07/2020 Link. Should see if you are able to make claim for your monitor purchase.

          • -7

@AgentXKnight: I bought it in March

            • +10

@Jamiea: So you bought it, pre covid price rises and Aussie dollar drop?

          • @AgentXKnight: So if I buy an AOC monitor now I get up to $100 in Steam credit ? I'm pretty keen on the AOC G2 27 inch for office work and some gaming

            • @freesteakknives: @freesteakknives You get a Steam credit for certain eligible monitors bought from an AOC reseller who has an ABN and tax invoice with GST listed and filling in the form. So check the link I posted and it will list the models of monitors eligible and the amount of Steam credit listed for those models in either $40, $50 or $100.

      A lot of people aren't too fond of 1080p @ 27".

      • +2

Really not that bad unless your nose is kissing the screen. I run both a 4k 32” and a decent 1080p 27” side-by-side and gaming on the 27” is perfectly fine.. also less your GPU needs to pump. Remember, colour calibration and hz are just as important as resolution. Look at some 1080p TV’s in their prime.. arguably better than many mid-spec 4K TV’s today.

        • +2

There's a massive circlejerk about how terrible it is. I use to run 32 inch at 1080, so a 27 is fine lol

          • @r3volt: Seems that way based on some comments from past 27” monitor deals..

          • @r3volt: Yeah as long as you sit about a metre away from it, you wont have an issue. Especially if all you are using it for is browsing/documents. In particularly, less of an issue with IPS panels. TN panels can be quite noticeable, just as viewing angles suck on those things, and you can get distortions depending on the angle you sit at, and how close you are. This is an issue on 24 inch monitors too, but far less noticeable on them because of that smaller size, and less chance of sitting at weird angles on them.

            • @ONEMariachi: The older I get the bigger I want the objects on screen to be 😁

        • That's fair enough yeah I don't find any issues with it but I've heard alot about them and suggested that's maybe why the prices are lower

Pretty much standard price, good price but no bargain.

Just feel like posting this now for those interested in looking for decent gaming monitors and because it just came in stock just in time before ASUS steam gift card promotion ends on the 31 of may. So useful for those looking to purchase higher quality gaming monitor and want an extra $20 gift card which they can use or sell at a discount.

    • It might be a deal considering since the pandemic happened, monitors everywhere have been going out of stock and have had a massive increase in demand. Therefore many monitors are now overpriced. If this monitor is its standard price then for some, that is a deal compared to the inflated prices of monitors now. (Unless you weren't referring to its usual price pre-pandemic)

    Not a deal,

Its its standard price (and can be found cheaper atm, look on staticice)

    • +3

not in stock it seems at those stores

    • Just look at those retailer that are cheaper they appear to not be in stock at moment and are either preorder or I do not know what IJK stock availability is because it appears to be pre-order not in stock and require a deposit to order it. So I think your negative vote is an inappropriate use as those retailer are currently not cheaper due to not being in stock at the moment.

    • They not in stock.
Even if they were you can just price beat at officeworks. Lulz

  • Given these current circumstances this is a pretty good price. Though waiting would be better as the 24G2 used to be $269 before Corona.

    • +1

Yeah I would recommend the AOC 24G2 at $269 but at current prices and limited availability at good prices the ASUS VG259Q offers good price for slightly higher quality monitor with a small price premium.

I purchased a 24G2 at $269 and at this older price it is hard to beat in Australia considering we have not gotten many of the other different manufacturers models of the 23.8'' FHD IPS 144 Panda panel only ones I have seen in limited stocks is the ASUS VP249QCR budget stand model at expensive prices of $369 and the MSI G241 at $379 to $399.

      • +1

Yeah the 24G2 is like the monitor in Australia with a killer price. In the states the G241 usually goes cheaper though.

  • Standard price, AOC 24G2 is slowly slipping back down in price, already at $300 on sale.

There's been decent 1440p 144Hz monitors for cheaper than this in the last 6 months, retailers need to get their shit together and either order properly or stop making customers pay for their mistakes.

    • Where did you see it for $300? Best I've seen in recent days is $323 via the AfterPay 10% deal on eBay currently.

      • Was about $300 on eBay recently, and at stores listed via StaticICE, but the stock seems to have sold through.

I have one. The text sharpness is an issue when on racing mode, which is the recommended mode for calibration. I turned up the "VividPixel" setting which sharpened the text (the sharpness setting is locked in racing mode). I had issues with green on other modes, but it's not as bad on racing mode.

    • I put mine on scenery mode because it looked the best to my eye and then adjusted the sharpness and lower brightness. Though I have heard that more recently manufactured units might have changed the default setting to scenery and ASUS might have made some adjustments but I am not sure it could have just had a bad first batch on the default factory settings.

      • Yeah, mine started up on scenery mode, but the green is way, way too intense. One of my messenger chats has green text bubbles and I could not read them.

        • Interesting I think mine defaulted on racing and I think mine might has some green issues with orange and brown type colours but it might be under saturated, though I am not 100% sure how to tell if over or under. I have not noticed any particular green over saturation in white backgrounds or noticeable green hue or issues like you experienced.

Could just be that ASUS has terrible factory calibration and for their TUF range does not care too much about their colour accuracy especially on gaming monitors and that possibly ASUS only put some effort for colors accuracy on premium ROG branded and super expensive monitors which occasionally are factory calibrated.

  • I hope to get this cheaper or maybe there might be an EOFY sale coming.

      TN panel

  • What's the best option for 27" mid range gaming monitor currently?

  • Picked one up, thanks OP.
Looks great as a secondary monitor 😁

  • Anyone badmouthing this on price obviously hasn't been paying attention for the last couple of months. Cross shopping the brands, anything with this sort of spec has been between $450 and $600. The AOC 24G2 deal has been the only other 144hz 24" IPS to come close on price but I had to pass on it due to the high dead pixel rate being reported. If you're not blind, you can definitely see the difference in pixel density on a FHD 27".

Anyway just want to say a huge thank you to OP! I ordered this with the free shipping at 9am this morning, received it by 4:30pm this afternoon and am using it to type this comment. Fantastic monitor!

    • I am happy that that my post helped you find good monitor this was main reason why I posted this to help someone out, don't forget about ASUS Steam code redemption that I mentioned in my post it is not too difficult to process only annoying thing is you need to take photo of your receipt (due to jpg uploading requirement) and a photo of SN on the back of your monitor.

Thanks OP, bought one since my main monitor died
