I just wanted to share my findings:

"Unfortunately, the most popular brand of enameled cast iron, Le Creuset, often shows lead and cadmium at very unsafe levels when tested"

Read the rest of it here:

      I followed that chain of blogs and misapplied science and have the following advice;
“please don’t eat your Le Creuset enamel Dutch ovens”

Additionally please don’t take medical or health advice down bloggers who clearly have no clue how to apply testing results or appear to have no understanding of science.

      • And don't mix cars (wrx5) with kitchenware.

        • I read a blog that a WRX contains large amounts of lead and cadmium. And you shouldn’t drive it.

      interesting.. will have a read.

      Nigella is far more attractive.

Aldi have a 3.7L for $24.99 on Saturday.

    • +1

Nowhere near comparable except for price.

Also note that Aldi's Crofton range has a maximum temperature of 190c due to the plastic lid knob, while the Le Creuset signature range has a maximum temperature of 250c with the phenolic lid knob and no maximum temperature for items with integrated cast iron or stainless steel knobs.

      • +1

This one doesn't appear to be from the Crofton range?
        It states:
        - 3-layer enamel coating
        - Stainless steel knob
No mention of a maximum temperature

        • Mmm, interesting neg vote.
I'm actually interested in identifying the differences between the Aldi product and the Le Creuset product.

        • +2

Ah you're correct about the knob - pretty sure when Aldi had these last year they didn't have stainless steel knobs.
Aldi shows the Crofton brand mark on the top right of the product images.

Here's a recent manual from Aldi US for a Crofton dutch oven: https://www.aldi.us/fileadmin/fm-dam/Weekly_Assets/2019/10_2…

          Oven safe up to 400 °F (204 °C).

EDIT: Another major difference is that Le Creuset comes with a lifetime warranty.

            @sickmate:

            Oven safe up to 400 °F (204 °C).

            That's poor.

The price doesn't seem to be comparable either, it's $25 vs $370, right?

$24.99 at Aldi this weekend. Cast iron is cast iron.

    • but does it have free lead and cadmium? are they on the label?

What about the quality of enamel? I own a couple of the aldi's and the enamel peeled off easily when I sauteed some onions and garlic.

      • +2

Damn that sucks. We have three different enamel coated cast iron Aldi bits (dutch oven, pan, and saucepan), they're regularly used, my wife chucks them in the dishwasher all the time and they're still good after years.

  • neevr mind, edit. i was looking at 20cm

    No dutch oven jokes yet?

    • So tell one…

    • yeah, I'm disappointed. Was expecting heaps.

      Q. What's the difference between a Dutch oven and a German one?

      A. The type of gas used.

The Holocaust would have been very different if the Dutch had been the Nazis. Just 6 million people holding their noses. (Not a subject to be made light of without deference to the event).

  • in store only? No sale prices on website

    • appears to be in store only. spotted at chatswood, nsw

    • Should be online now

I have a Le Creuset and a cheapo Aldi one. You can't compare. The colour for the cheapo one is coming off after three washes in the dishwasher. Three.

    • These can be put into dishwashers?

      • The Le Creuset ones, yes

    • Does the Aldi one still cook ok?

      • The paint can be rubbed off with your hands, so I didn't dare cook with it afterwards. No one wants black enamel in their food.

Choice mag not surprisingly has the Le Creuset on top but also said the Kmart Anko $29 one is worth a try getting an overall score of 75%. I went to Kmart recently and the shelves were bare in a lot of the departments. A backlog of supplies still awaiting to arrive from China.

  • I have $30 Harris Scarfe enameled cast iron that has lasted year fine so far. Hard pressed to convince me 10x that price is worth it.

  • I found about $500 worth of things I wanted to buy but had to give up because their system wouldn't let me order.

Firstly in firefox it wouldn't let me remove items from my basket when I added 2 by accident but I persisted and used edge.

Then lastly I'd forgotten my password and it never sent me an email reminder making it impossible to complete my order.

Then I try hitting the contact us to ask for help and get "product not found".

Completely useless Myer. I'll buy at Amazon.
