  • Are these any good?

    • +1

For the price does the job well, I was after NBN fttc router with vlan tagging… This one was suggested among others and suits my budget and need.

    • +1

I have purchased and installed these around 7 months ago. Absolute worry-free Wi-Fi, had so many other routers and systems before. Especially when you have a large or long area to cover, devices are roaming seamlessly between the access points.

I had a pair, I rate them, easy set up and no connectivity issues.
Have them both hard wired back to the modem which is great.
Cant comment on them when completely connected wireless to each other.

      • So you need to have a modem/router and then these in addition?

        • +1

No, sounds like they are just using Ethernet backhaul

          • @giventofly: I want to replace my router, me and my housemate have 1 for each floor, but the downstairs one is awful and constantly drops certain devices out. Would this work for a 2 storey apartment?

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Yes, I have mine setup in a 2 storey home. 1st unit is downstairs and connected directly to the NBN. 2nd and 3rd units are upstairs and connect to the 1st unit once the wi-fi network is established on the 1st unit. I replaced my Asus RT-AC68U with these and haven’t looked back; fixed all my black spot and connectivity issues.

            • +1

@[Deactivated]: Yes, it will work fine providing the units are not too far away from one another.

        • +1

FTTN and FTTB = modem + Deco.
FTTP and HFC = NBN NTD + Deco.
FTTC = NBN NCD + Deco.

      • +1

i have one wired back to my FW and the other connects via wifi. You can connect them to a modem, use them as a router or merely an AP

    • +1

Highly recommend these. Great coverage, super easy to setup, units are unobtrusive and have 2 ethernet ports (great for non-wireless devices), the app is quite good and provides easy management and parental control.

    • +2

They are good, but this price is not that good. I have been tracking these on eBay and Amazon for quite some time now. Just waiting for the 20% off ebay offer to pull the trigger. Currently they are:

Have these in my house, well the 2 pack as got it for a good deal about 8months ago, i'm a heavy user (wifi especially) and have absolutely zero complaints about performance and signal

    • How much you paid if don't mind sharing at that time ?

      • $148 for the 2 pack, i had just bought a bigger house so was trying to fix my wifi woes and get it to reach the whole house for cheap but decent speeds. Had planned on upgrading it but 8 months later i haven't needed to yet.

          Great price 👌

Has anyone had experience with both the M5 and the M9? Is the M9 worth the extra outlay?

    • Comparing a 2 pack setup.

      M5 AC1300.
      Dual band.
      350sqm wifi coverage.

      M9 AC220.
Tri band with dedicated wifi network between each M9. In other words even faster performance.
      420sqm wifi coverage.
      Integrated Zigbee smart home support.

I've used these for about a year and has great parental control too. 100% would recommend

    • Is the parental control an included feature or is it a paid monthly subscription/add-on?

I've just started doing research after moving in to a new house and want to upgrade my wifi but it seems some systems require a paid monthly free for parental controls.

  • Specs list Bluetooth - do you think it'd be possible to get some for a smart home hub software working on these?

    • I’m guessing, but it might just be used for initial setup.

    • M5 needs a smart home hub.

M9 has integrated Zigbee smart home support.

    • I see what you have done, $ lost 😞

      • Not sure what shipping is (and no pick-up option) so you may have saved $ !
Just another option for everyone I guess.

  • Can you connect to the 2.4GHz or 5GHz separately? I don't think my DEEBOT vacuum will work unless I can connect it separately to 2.4GHz…

    • +1

I have several devices that specify "2.4GHz only", including our washing machine and several smart devices. They all connected fine to the M5.

      • Thanks :)

    • +1

Not separately. Your device connects at whatever band it's capable of.

  • This or the Orbbi RBK23?

    • +1

Is the price of a 3-pack Orbi similar to the price of this one? I'm torn between these, the Orbi, the Eero, Nest Wifi and Deco E4. I'd go with the set that offers the most bang for my buck.

      • It's not usually but every now and then it drops to below $300 (though that's for the RBK23). RBK50 which is probably the one you're thinking of has been on sale for around $300 but doubt it will be again in this climate.

      • What type of NBN? FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP or HFC?

        Who is your internet provider?

Deco E4 WAN/LAN ports are limited to 100Mbps. It's fine if you have a FTTN or FTTB connection.

Orbi and Deco work with all ISPs.

Eero and Nest Wifi don't work with all ISPs.

        • Superloop on FTTP.
          Thanks for the heads up.

What do you think of the Asus ZenWiFi CT8?

          • @albert0pia: All those routers are compatible with Superloop on NBN FTTP.

I wouldn't buy the Deco E4 for FTTP with 250Mbps and 1000Mbps speeds available from tomorrow.

ASUS ZenWifi CT8 is a good setup albeit expensive.

            • @Twix: Are there any alternatives to the Asus CT8 that perform and are priced similarly?

              Thanks in advance.

              • @albert0pia: Spec wise the ASUS ZenWifi CT8 is the fastest AC mesh alongside the Netgear Orbi RBK50. ASUS firmware is better.

                • +1

@Twix: Thanks for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated.

    • I got the Orbi RBK20 2 pack for a bit cheaper than this because my house wasn't huge and the advertised dedicated 5GHz backhaul which the Deco didn't have. I found it does work fine but you do have to position the satellite very carefully. It was very picky, losing the backhaul connection in places I didn't expect it to.

For the same money, if I had a moderate sized house, this might be better even without the dedicated backhaul. Netgear Orbi only has subscription for in depth parental controls.

  • This or google nest wifi?

    • i would like to know this as well

      • You can look here for sheet showing comparison

        https://www.auspcmarket.com.au/tp-link-deco-m5-whole-home-me…

        Deco seems good

      • With even a cursory glance, it's obvious which of the two products is more powerful. Specs-wise, the Nest Wifi Router blows the TP-Link Deco M5 completely out of the water. It offers more onboard memory, a better processor, more RAM, and generally better overall coverage

But Deco is $260 and Google nest wifi is $499.. Decisions Decisions….

        • +2

Was on same boat, my need was router with vlan tagging which neither eero nor nest wifi offers.

Nest option was Asus 86U which is low stock

So when I saw the price of deco, was saving $, need was fullfilled.

Later down the track can use the saved money to upgrade on wifi 6 based router I months or years time.

Also can claim depreciation, as tax time is near.

Also if got 28 degree card, can use shopper protection/ price protection to claim the difference on price drop.

    • What type of NBN? FTTN, FTTB, FTTC, FTTP or HFC?

      Who is your internet provider?

Deco M9 is a more fair comparison with Nest Wifi.

  • I got 3x Goole wifi (original).. worth an upgrade or nah?

    • +1

      IMO, no need to upgrade.

    • +1

      No

  • How are these with client handover between nodes?
I currently have the Tenda MW6 setup at home but have constant issues as the primary node won't handover to the secondary nodes.

    • Can you reposition the secondary nodes closer or further away?

Your devices have to play ball when roaming too. Not just the router.

  • Can anybody with MBP post their connection/transfer speed figures on Wireless while in front of the main unit?

  • Anyone that purchased from binnings able to share reciept please ?
