I'm going to get a few more, tried hub, didn't like it.

    • Why didn’t you like it?

      • Couldn’t do anything I wanted to do.

        • What did you want to do?

          • +1

@SanAndreas23: Stuff that couldn't be done on a Google Hub

        • I wanted the google hub to read out my google emails. I wanted it to show me subscribed video content and playlist. Things that are google affiliated that can't be done on a google product

          • @sunnyc: Wait till you try and use a Gsuite account with a Google Home product… even more convoluted :(

            • @bdl: I've tried importing gsuite to gsuite and it took 7 days. 365 to gsuite 7 days. Don't know which one is worse.

  • Damn looks much better than $69 Lenovo.
    But this is Amazon…

Can we link Google calendar to this ? Like asking to set event, and ask Alexa what's my (Google) calender looks like today?

    • Yes it's in your Alexa app, link Google, Microsoft Apple calendars

      • So for someone who into Google, it is still 100% fine to have and use Alexa?

        • +8

Uh I wouldn't know. I have zero brand loyalty in everything.

        • +1

I still prefer to ask Google assistant things on my phone over asking Alexa. Alexa usually just goes "hmmmm, not sure about that"

        • I use both systems side by side (for work purposes). You can use Google Calendar just fine on an Alexa, in the same way Google and Apple calendars work together. Not all Google apps have an Alexa equivalent though, so I wouldn't guarantee 100%.

        • Yes, I use both. Todoist works better for me with Amazon/Alexa ecosystem (echosystem? :P) than Google Assistant.

      • Sucks that google music cannot be linked.

        • WTF, why would Google want you to use a competitor's product?!

          • @bdl: Because you pay a monthly subscription TO GOOGLE whatever product its used on?

    • Lenovo has 7" screen. Where can you get it for $69? Can only see JB HiFi 2 for $199

    • +1

can you tell your google hub to show your emails? Nope. but Alexa can, how ironic.

    • +1

Why not just look at your phone? I understand the appeal.

  • In the Amazon Echo Show 5 description it says: Watch movies, news, and TV shows.
How can you do all these on such a tiny screen?

    • +4

One by one. Why not. People uses mobile phone screen

      • -5

Most mobiles have 6" screen now and up to 4K resolution. It's easy to hold mobile phone in your hand and watch shows during travel.
Echo Show has terribly low 960 x 480 resolution. And you wouldn't travel with Echo Show and wouldn't want to hold it for longer than 5 minutes.

        • I carry mine around in my backpack everywhere

          • +1

@bdl: What kind of generator do you have in your backpack?

    • It's capable of watching videos, TV shows. Though as you said the screen size is about the same as a mobile phone with less resolution. For this price it's worth it for a smart device.

    • -2

The link from JB shows $159.00
      How's that same price as $79.00 ?

      • Echo 8 Not 5

      • bdl is referring to the Echo Show 8 not 5 which is actually cheaper at JB if you include the 5% discount which comes to $151.05.

        • But as OP said, if you use Shopback or Cashrewards when using Amazon you could get 7% cashback. ;)

  • The audio in this is really poor. Compared to my echo dot (2nd Gen) which also is a small speaker, the dot is so much clearer playing music.

    • The 5, the 8, or both?

The Echo Dot 2nd Gens are bad compared to the 3rd Gen (I have both) and I would be disappointed if the Shows’ are worse than the Dot Gen 2.

      • The microphone on the Show 5 is quite deaf compared to all the dot versions. The audio is average, the show 8 is quite good and the show 10 is exceptional.

      • The Show 5 has way better audio than the 2nd Gen Dot. I have a couple of each. I don't have the Show 8 but from what I've heard it's better again than the Show 5.

    • +1

To clarify, the audio on the show 5 is poor compared to my echo dot (2nd gen).

Can someone tell me what is the point of spending money on these divices? I can do all this with my phone? Seems a waste of money.

    • +14

      Smart home hub.
      always on.
Good on desk if youre working or gaming dont need to pick up phone.
      Doesnt drain your battery

If you dont need it you dont need it

Literally everything on earth is a waste of money if it doesnt fit your needs

Use with video door bell to see who’s there

I was looking at the "20% off select smart home devices when you buy an Echo" deal last week. Offer ends end of the month.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/b?ie=UTF8&node=6946656051

I was thinking Echo Dot 3rd Gen ($49) connected to external speakers. Show 5 was $99 last week but now it's a further $20 price drop, so am pondering again.

The Nanoleaf products are full price but with 20% off it's not too bad…. Still pondering since it's a lot of money!

    • Ditto. Even though I'm mainly in the Google Home system (I have a some Echos I use to drop in on my older parents), at worse it's a half decent talking alarm clock for the bedside table

I got Echo 5 in a package deal with Ring device last year. While I was sceptical initially, it can be a useful gadget :)
Sure you can do all these on your smartphone - but Echo 5 is mains powered.
It sits on my desk, you can talk to Alexa, watch Prime, Youtube and listen to internet radio stations. You can integrate it with Arlo cameras.
While screen quality isn't best, we are talking about screen size < 6".
Response time isn't great - there is usually small delay with everything pretty much.
For such a small device audio is not too bad, more bass than your Echo dot.
I wouldn't pay $79 for it, but under 50 dollar mark is no brainer.

    • How well does it integrate with the Ring?

      • +1

I don't know, I sold the Ring and kept echo.

  • I have a Spot (yes, the round one) in the kitchen. It’s been useful to entertain the kids. I’m looking for an Echo Show 8 to replace it so that my wife can use it for recipes and such. $159 is steep for me :(

  • Currently mulling over a replacement for my Logitech Boom Squeezebox as my bedside clock and have been eyeing these for a while.

The 5 has only got a single shitty 4W speaker while the 8 has got two 10W speakers, however you can't show the clock in full screen on the 8.

The 8 has been that price for about 2 weeks now… If it were to drop to $115 (which it were in Feb) I would jump at it..

  • I bought one for 129 and can't recommend it at all. I have other Alexa devices I'm happy with. Touch screen has no useful apps or anything, just posts random aleska tasks and quotes. Control panel for Smarthome devices would've been useful.

Very disappointing unit. I guess I expected something like an android tablet.

    • Definitely a disappointment that there's no smarthome control panel. That's been a huge benefit of my google homes

  • Does the screen dull on it to make it usable in the bedroom as an alarm close or it stays lit?

  • Lenovo Smart Clock for the Google camp.

Over a month ago I went to JB Hi-fi to check one out and unlike the Google stuff there was no hands-on display.

  • Anyone use this to Arm and Disarm Arlo?

  • +1

I got echo show 5 as a warranty replacement for my echo spot. I have been using it for few months now and I wouldn't recommend this. I mainly use it for skype calls and occasional watching of prime videos. The calls drop so frequently. Also every few weeks the speaker stops working and the device needs a restart to fix it. Overall the device is slow. The speaker is subpar compared to my other echo dot devices, the mic is better in comparison though. The news flashes on the screen are annoying and there is no way to turn them off.
