  • It's great getting all of these deals but there are so many different brands and a need for different apps. If you connect to Amazon or Google does it become seamless? E.g. I have three Kogan smart plugs so would want one app to control everything.

    • +3

You can link all the TP-Link Kasa stuff to Google Home.

    • +1

Google has limited control and functionality.

    • +3

TP-Link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Power Strip works well with Samsung Smartthings.

      • +4

Good to know. Just linked my TP-Link Kasa smart switch and gave it a try. I prefer the KASA app TBH. I'm powering a lamp and the KASA app gives me an option to have the lamp turn on at Sunset (so it will adjust when it turns on based on the changing seasons). Smartthings only has fixed time options.

        • +1

At present just using motion sensors with the TP-Link Kasa Smart Wi-Fi Power Strip & Samsung Smartthings hub.

        • +2

SmartThings has sunrise/sunset, in the new app go to Automations, add new automation then set the "If" trigger to time and on that screen you can select Sunrise, Sunset or XX minutes before or after sunrise and sunset.

    • +4

Home Assistant. If you want someone that can be control via one app but does take some time to get looking pretty and setup.

    • The three main smart systems (Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home Kit) all signed on to an agreement to standardise their platforms earlier this year. It’s not clear what it’s going to look like, and there’s various arrangements to allow the various products to talk to each other.

It’s massive burden to maintain some of these platforms, so it’s likely that some products will be obsoleted in the coming years. The basic protocols themselves will likely remain (eg. zigbee), but the cloud services are where the troubles might lie.

Kasa seems to be one of the mainstream brands that has had the most fire sales since this announcement, so it’s possible they’re gearing towards phasing it out. I have nothing to base any of this on other than speculation :). Anyone have some more insights?

This is a good alternative for $49 delivered and comes with an extra plug https://www.kmart.com.au/product/mirabella-genio-wi-fi-power…

    • Kasa app Tp-link provides are much more stable. I am willing to pay more on the software.

    • +1

Do note thought the to link has manual individual switches, which this doesn't

      • +1

Aren’t you able to control the switches individually through the app or via voice control? My point being I can throw this behind the Tele ( for example or a hard to reach place) and never have to reach out for the manual switch cause they are all app/voice control - unless I’m missing something ?

        • +1

Well yes the smart thing means you can do that.

But it's convenient to have a manual override option as well if you are next to it, or if it's gotten disconnected. But it's just a bonus feature you might not need.

    • I got the Mirabella yesterday from Costco Casula for $40. Really solid unit (built & weight), 4 plugs and 2 USB ports which can be individually controlled, linked to Google Assistant and Alexa. My chromecast is plugged into 1 usb port so very happy to be able to switch it on/off too vs. always on.

Also have a TP-Link smart plug, per my experience the Kasa & Genio apps are very similar, no complaint from me so far.

      • +1

I have tp link plugs and a Genio door sensor. Sensor drops off connection regularly. TP link plugs have been rock solid

Not sure if device or architecture but has me wary of more genio kit

      • My chromecast is plugged into 1 usb port so very happy to be able to switch it on/off too vs. always on.

        Why?

        • +1

I am of the belief that switching off electronics stuff completely when not in use will prolong its life. Maybe I'm wrong but it's just a personal preference.

          • @kutovat: Once you mix brands it gets messy. Mirabella has a few retailers like Kmart and some Coles dump the brand. One could use 3 of the single adaptors but usb will stay on.

  • +1

Are these able to tell you how much power you are using?

    • +3

From what I can tell not with this power board. But this individual one does hs110

  • +1

    thanks op!

  • +1

Got this last week from JBHifi. Very solid unit. Not cheap and lightly. App is flawless and easy to setup. Now I have 4 HS100 which I don’t need anymore

    • I'll have them. Thank you lol

  • -2

Still expensive.too many smart power strip these days, I rather the ones with individual switches which I have not seen for a long time

    • +2

This has individual on/off for each of the 3 plugs. I have one and very happy with it.

  • +1

How do you control individual sockets via voice (Google assistant)? Are they numbered? Can you name them? Or something else?

Eg is it something like "hey Google turn on socket 1 on tp-link"?

    • +2

You would name it whatever you want in Google Assistant. Socket 3 is named Kettle, "hey google turn the kettle on"

      • Sounds good, thanks. Do you have personal experience or its just how you expect it to work?

        • +1

I have personal experience with naming various devices in Google Assistant and controlling them with voice, but not with this specific, however from the description I think it's fair to assume that's how it works, what else could "independently controllable outlets" mean

  • What do people use this for

    • +1

personally I use mine for lights/lamps. my lamps turn on at 5pm every day and turn off at midnight. I can also tell google to turn them on/off. Very convenient to get into bed before turning the light off

  • These are amazing, have 2 in theatre room for seamless automation and control.
Might need to buy more at this price.
Kasa app is awesome and Google integration works perfectly for me by voice or touch using Nest Home Hub.

    There's the Arlec Grid Connect 4 outlet board with 1 x USB-A and 1 x USB-C port for 39.99 at Bunnings - https://www.bunnings.com.au/arlec-4-outlet-smart-powerboard-…

I have other Arlec Grid Connect and can set them up with Google/Alexa etc and set them to turn on/off based on lots of variables (sunrise/sunset, weather, temperature, wind speed and more) or just set up a tandard timer. Can arrange groups and "scenes" as well. Works great and pretty flawless so far.

    • +1

      No surge protection.

    • Just bought two of them today, they work great. Cheap and the app works perfectly.

      Highly recommended

    • Got the Arlec 4 socket version

Trying to work out to have a set timer to just switch off at a set time, well my electric blank, there's a timer settings but you have to set both ON & OFF of timer, I just want OFF timer

Wonder if you might know cheers

Edit: figured it out use scenes 👍

Shame you can't use this with smartthings and bixby voice but google is fine

  • Good point. Don't attach anything of value then! Saying that, can't recall ever losing anything in last 30 years due to voltage spikes… Not to say it won't happen though.

    • Looks like Amazon have matched the JbHifi deal.

  • Available for $56.05 at JB here until tomorrow for anyone following this thread who hadn't purchased.
