  • Any Ozbargainers used this? Any feedback versus the Ring cameras?

I use a mix of Arlo Pro and Pro 2 cameras. Can't compare to Ring, but I do like the unofficial API that allows me to automate actions. Here is one of the Arlo's catching an OCD crook (he wipes his feet!) sneaking around the back of the house: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEkT_dnrFyw. The action is all automated (lights and the fake dog barking sound). I designed it to appear like someone is inside the house as well as choosing an annoying yapping dog sound bite. There's a link in the Youtube video description to Github if you don't mind a DIY home automation solution.

      • This is so bloody good!

      • Have you noticed any decrease in quality since May? After a recent firmware update mine look noticeably worse and no where near 1080p quality. Although technically it is 1080p, it's compressed to hell.

I used to recommend these, but can't anymore

Can't say I have noticed any quality difference in the Pro 2 (it's on 1.125.14.0_34_1189). The HomeOps footage was taking on the original Pro (720p) and my other Pro 2 (1080p) is certainly better when comparing the two.

Off topic, for entertainment, I dubbed the original HomeOps footage audio with alternate sound files in this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1TuHgjlq_FZ7x2R0ZWFF…. My kid prefers the elephant trumpeting alarm. I prefer the Predator snarling and then Arnie yelling to the burglar to run to the chopper. The jig might be up if I replaced the yappy dog with any of those alternate sound files. :-)

          Yes, absolutely.

The Arlo Pro 2 quality has dropped so badly since early 2019 to a point now where my old original Arlo 720P video (I still use two of these cameras) is noticeably better.

There is a lengthy thread in the Arlo support forums right now about this. Arlo (not owned by Netgear any more) have being trying to reduce the cost of the 7 day cloud storage (free for Arlo Pro 2 & older) by reducing the bitrate that the supposed 1080P video is saved at. So while it is technically still 1080P the files have a smaller kbps than even the Arlo 720P video. The video files from my wife's Canon compact camera (1080P) are 19 times the size per second of video and yet both are supposed to be 1080P.

So don't think for a moment that the Arlo Pro 2 1080P is going to look anything like the 1080P (full HD) you get from a mobile phone or proper camera - it doesn't.

Right now it is a pixelated mess, especially when viewed on anything large than a phone screen. People from all around the world are currently lodging complaints with ACCC equivalents because these "security" cameras have such poor video that facial recognition (even in broad daylight) is impossible so they are completely useless for their primary intended purpose as security cameras.

I used to be a big fan of Arlo and bought a 4 camera kit (original Arlo 720P) in 2016, and a 3 camera Pro 2 kit in March 2019, but the company and support has really gone down the tubes since they split from Netgear. I definitely would not recommend Arlo anymore.

I've had 4 x Arlo Pro 2 and 1 x Arlo Q for a couple of years now and recently added some Ring doorbells and cameras to my home. For me personally, the 2 systems are night and day with the Ring products being far superior over Arlo, particularly with the app. In comparison to the Ring app (there are 2 apps btw, Ring and Ring Rapid), the Arlo app is slow and sluggish on all my devices. Notifications are delayed and going into live view can take about 10 seconds for me (no difference between any of the 5 Arlo cameras). The "two-way" talk is a joke - did not work for me.

With Ring, it's pretty much instant notification on all my devices and on the chime when someone rings the doorbell or when the other Ring cameras detects motion. It takes about 2-3 secs max to enable live view. The "two-way" talk is 100x times better on the Ring - you can actually have a conversation with almost no lag at all. You can buy an Indoor Ring Camera (wired) for $99 from Amazon AU. An Arlo Q costs $199 (comparing these 2 because they're both wired and does not require a base station to operate)

The biggest con for me with Ring is the need for subscription if you want cloud video recording - no option for local recordings either. I believe it's still free 7 days cloud recording (and you can do local recording via the base station with an external HDD) for the Arlo Pro 2. Also, Ring has no proper integration with Google Assistant/home if that's your jam. Arlo does, but it takes like 30 sec to a minute for live view to come on my google home hub.

My $0.02 and as always with these sorta home camera cloud based systems, YMMV.

  • Does anyone know how this compares to the Eufy 2c cameras sold by SCA?

  • I'm still using original Alro with 5 Cameras,,,, time to upgrade..?

    • If you upgrade to this you are still 2 generations behind. I'd say the step up from yours to this wouldn't be worth it.

      • Whats the current one?? Arlo pro 4?

        • Technically it’s the arlo pro 3 but they released an Arlo ultra in the middle which is considered more premium and has 4K recording.

      • +2

Arlo pro3 is overrated. Barely 4K after all the compression. Also loses the ability to cloud sync 1 week for free. I have 4 pro 2 and 1 pro. Decided not to upgrade. The best upgrade option is to go hardwired imo.

A friend of mine has eufy and it seems like a massive improvement.

I have a mix of Arlo Pro, and Arlo Ultra and Arlo Q plus. I've been happy with them. I also pay a subscription as I have over 10 cameras combined on the one account.

I'm impressed with the Arlo Ultra however wish they kept the internal siren built into the base station. They've now put sirens on the cameras (which are fairly piss weak decibels, it may alert an intruder but it wouldn't startle them like the Pro version base station would) My rear cameras get charged about once every 2-3 months whereas the front cameras will most likely last 4-6 weeks max due to the increased traffic.

Otherwise battery life is very good, image quality is good. Alerts and motion detections work well for my usage. If you want something easy and user friendly this is the camera kit, I also realise this is not a budget camera but they've been available lately at excellent prices.

    • I should also add I've caught 4 thieves in action, I've either rocked up and approached them or most recently was back in Feb when I noticed suspicious behaviour on our vacant home (lucky I have a detective as my neighbour) who loves his job :)

FYI, 2 Pack of Outdoor Mount for the Arlo are available from Bing Lee for $5 + Delivery (Free C&C)

    • Nice deal but seems all sold out.

  • Worth noting the basic subscription includes 7 days storage of videos and is now free.

I find there is a slight (5-10sec) lag from when recordings start. Not a complaint, but assuming this stops lots of false pings too.

    • The 7 day storage has always been free on Arlo, Pro & Pro 2 - it is only the latest models (Pro 3 & Ultra I think) that force you to use a subscription service. The free storage seems to be the very reason that Arlo is now reducing the data bitrate (compression) of the files where the video is useless as it is pixelated and lacks detail.

See my more detailed comment above.

As for the lag - it does not reduce false "pings" - it just starts the video too late to capture the action usually. A camera will be triggered by movement and it starts recording about 3 seconds later, by which time the thing that triggered the motion sensor has often moved away so you are left wondering what caused the trigger. Arlo "solved" this with the Pro 2 cameras which had a 3 second "look back" facility - the only problem is that to get this to work you had to power the cameras from mains (sort of defeats the wirelsss aspect) and connect them to a subscription (defeating the 7 day free storage), so technically you could see the source of the trigger, but only by wiring them up and paying extra money each month.

      • Do you know if the quality on local storage recording is any different?

        • Different in what way ? Quality isn't any better, recording still has a 3 second delay.

As far as the extremely poor 1080P (more like 360P) quality goes, there is no difference between viewing Live (on app or desktop), viewing stored videos (on local or cloud), or viewing downloaded videos - they are all equally bad now.
