iPhone 4S - Opinion and Price

Was this expected? Or was this a huge disappointment?

I am sooo disappointed….

I expect it to be around $900 outright?

      16GB - $799
      32GB - $899
      64GB - $999

Available from October 14, pre-orders from October 7.

It was pretty much expected, it was already leaked on Vodafone Germany's website, and pics from the Brazilian manufacturing plant.

There were no traces of an iPhone 5 anywhere, which in this day and age points to the fact it didn't exist, which turned out to be true.

  • my opinion is that it's not worth the upgrade unless you really have too since if you own a 3GS you'll be getting iOS 5. The price? well that's apple for you so it might be worth looking at other smartphones.

    it's dissapointing

Better off with the SGS2 I reckon.

    • i + you but as a current owner of iphone 3gs and htc hd2, i still prefer iphone.
with my hd2, i have tried put different os, i used it with android 2.3.5 and now with win mob 7 mango.
nothing wrong with the os, i think android is good but my concern is the hardware itself. too many buttons on android phones

      • heh? sgs2 and nexus s has less buttons than ip

        • +2

not physical button to per say, but virtual button,
there is simplicity in iOS. it comes at a cost of convenience and customization.

        • I would have thought a back button would be very useful on the iPhone, but using a single button means all physical shortcuts are limited to that button only.

Really helps in multitasking, opening options, home page, back button, search all which are more or less thumb functions.

But yes, comparing the iPhone or android phone is useless. Better comparison is iOS vs Android vs "WP7"(not really this one though)

    • -2

Now why would you buy a SGS2, isnt that due to be upgraded in next few months to SGS3?

      • Prime is announced in less than a week, released within weeks after that… THEN the SGS3 would be announced and then released after that and then IP5 would be announced and released…
        It's a never ending cycle…
If you need a phone now, get the SGS2, if you have time to wait might as well wait the 5 years for the newest and latest.

        • +1

Sorry its a digg at the droid fans who 6 months ago argued not to buy an iphone4 because an iphone5 was coming out, but in same breathe say buy an SGS2 instead.

Their veiled logic is that they suggest wait for the iphone5, but not the SGS3. When will the geeks realise that processor speed is NOT the only reason to buy a phone, and that if you want the newest features you'll never upgrade that 10 year old Nokia. (as there will be a newer model of something out next week).

If you like iphone then why would you consider a samsung (the same logic applies in reverse)

        • The SGS2 has been reviewed by many and declared a near perfect android phone. No android phone ever came even close to being so well received. I think that is the reason the SGS2 is suggested to much.

I've yet to come across a blog that has given the SGS2 any flak.

In fact I'll be pretty disappointed with Prime if it doesn't have the Exynos processor, 8mp camera and a smaller bottom bezel than the one seen from the leaked photos

Its what they did with the Iphone 3
I am a Iphone 4 user (my first iphone) I am happy with that

They have brought in some enhancments today
So if you dont have an Iphone 4 Yet. get the 4s

Apple never said WAIT till we release version 5

  • to be honest, this doesn't surprise me. what i really want to see is what all the diehard apple fans will do/say.

  • +1

looks like they are running out of ideas :D

  • +1

you know, it's interesting what apple considers progress, everytime they come out with an incremental upgrade a lot of people are disappointed they didn't include this or that feature, i mean look at the ipad 1 and 2, you would think the battery life was improved due to a better battery or power consumption tweaks but how does apple put their spin on it? "the new ipad 2 has the same battery life as the ipad 1 but it's (slightly) thinner"! it's a good thing the original had a good battery life to start with

  • One word: Milking

  • My opinion: its shit.
    $799? Bloody Rip off.

  • +3

I thought someone on OzBargain ought to have suggested "wait for iPhone 5"? :)

I think with dual core A5 it would just match the current top-end Android phones in terms of hardware. Not for long I guess, looking how fast the Android phone iterates. So iPhone 5 could be just around the corner if Apple has planned their strategy properly (unless their competing strategy just has "lawsuit" in there).

Just wait for the next Nexus to be announced :D

    • Too Big and Too Curvy. Not sure whether you get something when you combine the two together but I can be very wrong on that :)

    • Certainly will be missed; such a visionary!

Someone at work said, it's karma for suing everyone. But nonetheless, thanks to him we have what we have now.

    • -2

"thanks to him we have what we have now" - has he really impacted non-apple users ?

      • You're kidding right!?

      • -1

dude you're not looking at the big picture, he came up with the ipod and iphone and ipad, some of the features in these inspired other non apple products, which is partly why apple are suing other companies making similar hardware

        • +2

Or other companies suing Apple… Depends on how you look at it.

        • +1

the ipod came out during/before the height of mp3 players, i don't see how the non-existence of an ipod would have affected mp3 players ? As i remember the market for mp3 players was far and wide and one had to resort to much research on cnet + other sites alone to make any judgment on a purchase. as for the iphone and ipad, it's been said before but he's taken existing features/products and put them together + marketed it well and for that i give him/apple credit but…that's successful marketing not pioneering a technology.

i'm sorry if i come across as snarky but i was really actually asking a question, not a snide comment.

also, apple is suing other companies THAT ARE MAKING ITS HARDWARE. and while samsung's tab is (extremely) similar to the ipad, they are suing on the basis of patent infringements when the patent goes along the lines of "rectangular tablet with a button on the front bottom middle and silver back and black front" - please tell me, can i sue you for having two eyes, a nose (with two holes), two legs + arms, and hair ?! and don't tell me because you have different coloured hair and limbs that you're not copying me.

      • +1

        Hmmm.

Apple II? Tried one of those in the early 80's? Apple made it cheap enough which a lot of people are able to own one.

What about Macintosh, which has one of the earliest graphical user interfaces for personal computers?

What about Pixar, Toy Story and the effects on the computer animated firms over the last 15 years?

And we are not even talking about the iDevices yet.

Now, innovation is one thing — Apple has got lots of those, and the fact is undeniable. However patents of ideas, which prevent the freedom of further innovation — that's something else, which I see a lot of big corp have been doing unfortunately, and Apple being one of them.

        • +1

C'mon people (all the above on the patents games)

Patents are being used by everyone to protect their IP, some are strong patents some are not. Samsung is playing the game as much as anyone else. Nokia, Google, Microsoft Apple Cisco Oracle, the list goes on.

Yep my favourite is being sued by my not favourite, hey that's unfair. If its the other way around, I dont really care. Sound familiar?

There are courts that decide these cases. Do you really think your whinging here really makes one iota of difference.

When elephants dance ants get squashed. No amount of Antics will chance that.

Yep the big boys have more money, fancier Lawyers, yep and guess what? its been the same for hundreds of years.

Do you really think Google, who has been squashing little guys in the search engine business for years is really going to be nice if they get Android established? Nearly all your top searches are there because they pay Google.

Now we are really off topic….

        • "Apple II? Tried one of those in the early 80's? Apple made it cheap enough which a lot of people are able to own one.

What about Macintosh, which has one of the earliest graphical user interfaces for personal computers?"

sorry i never took those into account as i wasn't alive in the 80s, and i've survived on using PCs and never owned a mac - though this is more a choice by my parents who bought it as i grew up, not a choice for me.

oh and ozpete, as to my whinging, of course i know i apple, samsung, nor the courts will see it BUT really it's raising awareness which is the start to all change. just like the made-in-china article about Apple i posted up. it all begins with awareness.

        • Apple II Cheap enough? Now that's revising history. It was never cheaper than other computers. TRS80 Dick Smith System 80, Commodore PET etc, although it was colour etc. It just had better features like the first 5.25in drive fora personal computer, colour etc.

Made in China - applies to almost most electronic items, maybe not Samsung, but many of their parts are made in China.

As for awareness change, that makes sense, but really who is changing who - the 4S is already sold out in the US, read my post towards the end of this thread.

Reality like I said, is the concern really about Chinese "labour" or its that the Blue Team is beating the Red team, when you are a Red Team barracker.

You know Foxconn the great exploiter makes products for

          • Acer Inc. (Taiwan)
          • Amazon.com (United States)
          • Apple Inc. (United States)
          • Asus (Taiwan)
          • ASRock (Taiwan)
          • Intel (United States)
          • Cisco (United States)
          • Hewlett-Packard (United States)
          • Dell (United States)
          • Nintendo (Japan)
          • Nokia (Finland)
          • Microsoft (United States)
          • MSI (Taiwan)
          • Motorola (Now part of Google) (United States)
          • Sony Ericsson (Japan/Sweden)
          • Vizio (United States)

And Samsung isn't the loveliest corporation in the world. In 2005 Samsung agreed to plead guilty and to pay a $300 million fine, the second-largest criminal antitrust fine in US history.

And I am sure everyone can find transgressions by all the above mentioned comanpies apart from Samsung

I have had a couple of 3GS, and just got a used iPhone 4 last week. They are almost the same, but there are small things in the 4 that are better. The screen is better but you really only notice it when you compare side by side. But the camera in the 4 is SOOoooo much better than in the 3GS, but it still doesn't really do many things that my old Samsung i900 5MP camera can do.

Anyway, just like 3GS to 4, the 4GS just continues the standard Apple thing… small updates, nothing too radical. Don't rock the boat, but continuous improvement.

The main thing in the 4GS is the camera - a MASSIVE improvement over the 4, which in itself is a great camera (for a phone). http://www.apple.com/iphone/built-in-apps/camera.html - and finally Pinch-to-zoom!

But seriously, what else could they improve? Maybe give another 1/2" of screen and a bit less bezel?

If it was ME… I'd change heaps about the OS, especially the ability to customise things. But that is not Apple's way, and you gotta admit that they sell a shirtload of phones despite the "inflexibility" of the iOS. But there is also lots of changes to iOS that flow back down to 3GS and 4 as well. http://www.apple.com/ios/features.html

Hopefully I'll be able to update to iOS 5 on my phones if they can fix iTunes. The last iTunes update wiped out ALL my XP machines, so I had to load iTunes on out Windows 7 Netbook so I could deal with a restore the other day. God I hate iTunes, what a useless, bloated, over-complicated, glitchy, difficult to use piece of shit it is. iOS5 claims to free you from iTunes, which for me is probably the NUMBER ONE thing that the new iPhone brings!

Side note - one thing I noticed is how uncomfortable an iPhone 4 is to hold after using a 3GS. They are so sharp on the edges! And whilst it's heaps thinner overall, the 4 feels a LOT thicker than a 3GS when you are actually using it!

    • the 4GS

Sorry but where the hell do people get this extra 'G' from?
The third time I've heard it today.

Sorry - It was a mistake… I was doing it from memory.

      • +2

any point to this, or just being pedantic?

  • If they had wrapped a new cover on the new insides and called it an iPhone 5, people would be happy.
Personally I like the iPhone 4 form factor and all your old accessories will fit. I guess its Apple minimalism at it's best. Still not cheap though and I wish they would put a phone in the iPod touch, but there here to make a profit. RIP Steve, I love your work.

    • +4

Ummm Errrr… but if they put a phone in the iPod Touch, then they would call it… an iPhone

      DOH

  • I have a iPhone 3S and I'm not in a rush to upgrade! It does the job.

It has a good camera for what I need it for (taking basic photos/short videos while on holiday, while out and about, etc) I don't think I've ever really had an issue and wished for better photo quality.

All of the updates are still supported by Apple (including iOS5), so where's the problem?

I do like the idea of Siri, but even that is mainly down to the novelty factor… how many times I really NEED too desperately use it is a different matter.

All in all, it's still not worth me paying almost $1K for an upgrade, so they can get stuffed.

    • +1

The iPhone3GS still is available for sale, its just moved down the price ladder, and people who might have looked at a cheaper android can now buy the iPhone3. So if it does the job why upgrade. Unless you are a geek who wants faster processing power to do some unbelievable things that most wouldn't even care about.

    • Speed.

      • but what for? That's my point. You can have speed for speed's sake, but (while I understand speed is nice), is it worth $800?

        • Wasn't you 3G once $800 too? And you upgraded to that because your prior phone was too slow?

        • c'mon, kiwipride.

          a few points:

          1. I never paid $800 for my 3GS (I don't get phones when they're brand new and ridiculously overpriced). I paid nothing like that.
          2. I buy phones for features, not for speed.
          3. I bought my 3GS because my old phone stopped working.

I understand the point you were trying to make, but you failed.

        • +2

          kiriakoz

Cut the guy some slack. LOL

Many of the geeks believe that processor's make a phone, that's why they cant understand why anyone wants to buy an iPhone. Specs vs experience.

Guess when you've been playing video games all your life, and you have been out shot because someone has had a faster processor or graphics card, its hard to understand anything else.

        • +2

I lost my work iPhone 4 months ago when I left that job. Because I tried to save money, I've since had FOUR different phones, including a $1 Huawei, a Windows 6.1, Windows 6.5 and Android 2.2 phone.

I then bought a used iPhone 3GS for $200 and sighed with relief.. I can USE IT easily. My kids can use the phone, my partner can use the phone. Grunt might be one thing, but usability is where iphone KILLS the others. Yeah, you cannot customise, but really… if the OS is good then you don't NEED to customise, do you?

Now I have a used iPhone 4, and am selling off all the others. I use the phone for everything (email, gaming, GPS, etc) and whilst it sometimes lags for 1/2 a second, at least it didn't take me days and days of fiddling about to set up like my other phones.

I'm no Apple fanboi - I loath Apple, and I especially loath iTunes (which is my #1 reason for spending 4 months to try and NOT get an iPhone). The only thing that still tempts me is the new Windows 7 phones, like the Samsung Omnia 7 on that Optus deal.

    • When I had my 3GS, I used the phone for video and photos because it was in always my pocket, whilst my proper camera wasn't. But then I found that camera in the old Samsung Omnia i900 (released many years ago as a competitor to the iPhone 3G) showed me how poor the iPhone 3 camera is.

The difference between a 3GS camera and a 4 camera is massive! Remember, the 3GS doesn't have a flash, so your shots are as graining as hell unless it's in sunlight. They might look OK on the phone screen, but try enlarging or cropping a iphone 3GS photo and you'll soon learn how poor the optics are.

Remember - the number of megapixels is not really all that important in cameras… it's the LENS that matters. The lens in the 3GS is so tiny that it doesn't gather enough light to give decent shots in most situations. It's great as a "phone camera", but the 4 has a camera that rivals that in a cheap (sub $100) compact. The 4S lifts that further, especially in low light conditions.

  • +1

Hmmm I think I'll be holding out for the iPhone 5. Like the 3GS, this one sort of fails to get me excited.

  • +1

Been holding onto my iPhone 3G in hope of a 5 being released, and I was very dissapointed with the announcement of the 4S :(.

I think it is overpriced and competition has caught up. I will be going Samsung Galaxy S2 for around $600 outright.

  • +1

I believe that apple wants iPhone 5 to be 4G compatible and as you know Telstra already declared their roll out for 4G technology, and many other countries will also do the same. so they were forced to delay iPhone 5 but as they promised to release something so they did iPhone 4s.

    • +2

Correct although the issue of why they havent done it, is a little more technical.

There is some issues with the LTE chip design to get it in a small enough package, so that it can fit.

Also having been involved with tech product launches in the past, I suspect that there may also be issues with procuring enough screens of a larger size.

They are moving away from Samsung as their supplier, so they have to find other suppliers.

No point introducing a product without sufficient parts, as this would mean shortages of supply etc, and imagine the screams if people cant get enough of the product.

Plus its not their traditional product strategy, to completely change a product design within 12-15 months, something overlooked by a lot of people being over enthusiastic about releases.

Also AT&T announced pre orders show the most successful iPhone yet with 200000 orders in 12 hours US Alone.

Compared with iPhone4 600,000 in 24 hours for across ALL carriers in US, France, Germany, Japan and the UK.

And the Iphone4S is now available to Sprint AND Verizon at this launch where it wasn't when the iPhone4 was launched.

Apparently pre order stock is now moved out to 1-2 weeks delivery.

While the enthusiasts might be down on no iPhone5, the market seems to like it.
