    I have to resist.

    • +1

I'm waiting for the msi bravo 15 to arrive.. but will probably be $1500+ on discount

      • How's the specs?

        • +1

Extremely similar but with a 120hz panel

After owning the msi gl65 and the Dell G3 15

The msi had much better cooling and better overall feel to it

The screen 60hz and battery on the Dell I was disappointed with, for a Dell

          • @vanyellow: when will it arrive?

            • +1

@baldur: I emailed msi Australia, about a month ago

And the person who replied to me said after June

              So hopefully early july

  • +4

Stick this in the xps 13 please

    • +9

Yeah, if you want to fry eggs on it.

        No bacon?

60hz screen for such powerful hardware… This would have been great if you could pay a little extra for a 144hz instead of forced to go for the top model which cost +$500

    • +1

If i am not mistaken there is supposed to be a cheaper 120Hz display option for this cheaper model (144Hz is for the higher model) but that will not be available until mid Summer (northern hemisphere).

      • +1

Dave Lee youtube review mentioned 120Hz panels will be shipping later in the year for the same price as the 60Hz model now. Just need to wait for another sale then for significant boost in screen for gaming performance

    • would there be a noticeable difference for productivity with the higher refresh rate?

      • +3

Yes, very. Moving mouse around, scrolling through web and documents, dragging windows etc. are all noticeably smoother on a high refresh screen. It's a curse, once you see it, you can't go back :))

      • +8

No. If you're using this for the CPU for spreadsheets, you'll be totally fine. And you'll be able to run games too.

60Hz has been the standard for monitors for years. Faster is nicer, but totally non-essential to productivity.

        • +2

Non essential, but from somebody who has just gone 144hz it's a much more pleasant experience.

    • +2

Just buy a freesync external display - always going to be much better than a tiny 15.6" screen. Its good that they save money on the screen honestly.

      • But then you're looking at $300 extra for external monitor, even then you cannot carry the external monitor in your backpack, can you? There are many people who prefer to game on the go, in school, office, at lunch break, LAN party etc, there are students who lives in dorms with very limited space, often just enough space for a laptop and a book or 2. I have a high-end gaming PC at home, but at times I still wish I had a nice gaming-capable laptop to game in different rooms.

Regarding 15.6" tiny screen. It's still a full HD screen so you still have the same screen estate to a 24" Full HD. Unless you're talking about 27" 1440p or more, but you'll be looking at $500-700, and the laptop cannot handle that res anyway. For 15 years, I spend most of my time working on a laptop monitor as a web developer, the small screen doesn't affect my productivity at all as long as the color and brightness is good.

    • I found the TUF A15 to have pretty much the same specs except it uses a GTX 1050ti but has a 144Hz screen. Better value? 20% off so same price I think
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Asus-TUF-A15-15-6-FHD-144Hz-Ryze…

      • The link show 1650ti, but still it's barely enough to push 100fps+ on most game though. A 2060 or this dell's 5600m are much better pairing with 144hz screen.

Edit: the asus tuf screen quoted 45% NTSC, holy… that's garbage tier!

        • But with current specs, do you think the Dell is better value?
Dell has +3Wh battery, 5600M graphics
While Asus only has the 144Hz screen as an advantage, and you're saying the screen is bad too?

          • @Mr Bargain Hunter: For same price, you're better off with the Dell. Better GPU, and a screen with much better color (100%+ sRGB vs 60% sRGB). 144Hz won't do any good if the color is just out of whack and the GPU just can't pump out enough fps.

            • @Kingduytan: Hmm okay, thanks. Definitely looks like the better option. That's the main thing the ASUS had going for it. Just hope delivery doesn't take ages lol

            • @Kingduytan: Yes, true, this one have 72% NTSC Color gamut = 99% of sRGB, if you do the conversion.

    8Gb RAM though…

    • Anyway to reconfigure to 16GB RAM with Dell?

    • yes, this 8gb is a dealbreaker for me. Had a monitor already so 60Hz does not make much of a difference, but this 8gb …Hmmm

      • RAM is up-gradable

      • +5

You can easily buy 16GB stick/kit for $100 and upgrade yourself. Personally I always go with lowest possible RAM + SSD configuration when buying laptop if they are upgradable. It's almost always much cheaper to upgrade yourself than buying the desired configuration outright. e.g 32GB ram + 1TB SSD cost $350-400 for DIY (and you get to choose quality parts), most manufacturers will charge $500-1000 if such upgrade is available.

        • 16gb kit 3200mhz sodimm …. not quite $100

          this is not desktop ram

          • @dcep: $169 for great timings and $120 for poor timings. These were just the first and seconds links that game up when I googled 16GB DDR4 SODIMM btw so better deals might be out there.

Still, much cheaper than paying dell to upgrade it for you, sell the 8GB kit that comes with it and it'll only cost $50-100 to upgrade

            • @[Deactivated]: Do timings make much difference?

              • +1

@Homr: Depends on the workload. It's worth paying extra for it if you want to make the most of the laptop for sure. CAS16 vs CAS22 is a huge difference compared to the differences in timing you usually see.

                • @[Deactivated]: This is also why upgrade RAM yourself is better, you can choose to pay extra for much tighter timings kit or save money if you think it's not worth it. I'm pretty sure most 3200mhz RAM in AMD laptops have CL somewhere between 20-22.

          • @dcep: $114, not quite $100 atm but you could wait for a deal.

        • most laptops support 32 right?

          • +1

@baldur: Yeah, if they have 2 upgradeable RAM slots.

    • Yeah I would definitely want to at least change that to 2x8GB although it might be worth buying it as is and then adding it in yourself later.

  • +1

    $2200 for the 4800H/16GB/512GB/144hz model.

For the same price you can get an ASUS G14 Zephyrus:https://www.affordablelaptops.com.au/contents/en-us/p3818_ASUS-Zephyrus-G14_GA401II-HE003T.html

    With a 1650TI.

    • But no webcam.

        Mark Zuckerberg approves

    • +1

Also 8Gb ram is soldered so no dual channel and limit to max ram

  • +5

It runs hot according to notebookcheck. Net.
Dell G5 15 SE with AMD Ryzen 7 4800H records above 100 °C average CPU temperatures.

    • +1

Does the Intel-Nvidia equivalent do the same?

      • +4

Yes it does, not sure why people are complaining, this is a pretty good Amd CPU deal.

        • +2

I know my Intel i7-8750 (different laptop) runs hot. I've undervolted it to stop it reaching 100 degrees then throttling. RTX2060 doesn't have overheating issues

        • +1

People are complaining because some laptops don't run as hot or loud as the Dell. I have an Asus Scar III, i7-9750h, 1660ti, I've overclocked gpu to 1950mhz (boost) and temps only around 80c, cpu around 90c, the fans don't exceed 45db. Compared to the Dell, fan's over 50dB with higher temps to boot.

    • Worth noting the 4800H model is not the same model as this post. Article refenced is here https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-G5-15-SE-with-AMD-Ryzen-7…

  • +2

It's actually insane how this trade blows with a 9750H/10750H

    • +14

Macbook with these specs would cost like $5000, no thanks.

      • -2

Lol I know sorry hahha just wanted to fetch some downvotes for fun

      • Im going to have to say not true for battery there are laptops in similar ball parks and software is preference plenty of programs only work on windows so its up to you and your workflow. Ill give you speakers and trackpad but they are debatable on worth as if you use headphones or mouse or other speakers obviously not work extra

    • Different classes of laptops - gaming laptop vs ultrabook

  • It appears Dell have moved back to being Stupid again and putting all the ports on the sides (again).

For a while many laptop brands moved away and started putting ports on the rear which many seemed to prefer.

Oh well, its certainly one that I wont be purchasing but good luck Dell.

    • first world problem?

      • +6

No they have laptops in 3rd world countries too

        • +2

But they don't consider it a problem. They just get on with life adjusting as best as they can so Baldur is right first world problem, its a laptop FGS

          • @sn809: Yeah state the obvious why dont you. But its an investment which some of us out there dont just buy crap on the fact that we accept the status quo. Some of us have needs and dont wish to adjust so writing that off as a first world problem sounds more like lack of thinking or lack of understanding or perhaps caring about design.

    • In gaming laptops I've found the back is usually used to blow hot air out of the machine. Otherwise, they'll need to push the air out the sides which wouldn't be very uncomfortable while gaming.

      • would be comfortable?

        • +1

Oops, meant having hot air blown onto your hands would be uncomfortable

    • I don't get it, is it as problem that the ports are easily accessible?

  • This looks like better value than the desktops that techfast have been putting up.

  • I wish 16gb would become the new minimum ram amount alreadyyyyy

    • +7

At least you can upgrade these yourself. The entry level Alienware m15 R2 has 8GB of soldered RAM!

    • 8gb of ram really is quite acceptable today, and it's easily upgraded in the future. I was playing AC odyssey and it was using about 4g of ram, which leaves plenty of space for Windows. Yes, you may have to let windows page Chrome if you have 20 tabs open.

Also this is a CRAZY cheap price. If it was $2k, then yeah give me 16gb.

      • +1

I’ve found 8GB capping out and resulting in stuttering in most A+++ games (presumably trying to shift memory into the hard drive). 8GB can work but definitely 16GB is desireable.

        • Yeah it's more that a cpu/gpu of this grade, in a well made laptop, for $1350 is crazy cheap. 8gb of ram is not something that should stop you buying it.

        • What about 12GB of ram? Would that be okay?

          • @Mibo: 12GB would probably be ok

          • @Mibo: I only have two recent games. Anno 1800 and Ac odyssey. Ac uses about 4, and anno uses 6gb. I have 32gb, so it's not limiting itself.

For sure I'd keep the installed 8gb of ram. Amd CPUs are really fussy about ram types and speed. If you find you're getting some fps drops, you can upgrade later.

  • Pity only 8gb for a gaming machine

    • Yeah otherwise i would have picked this one. As during gaming session 8gb struggle to keep up and the above model is not any good considering the color and price right now

      • +6

A fairly top end CPU, a very strong gpu, and a fast 512gb ssd with a good quality FHD panel all for $1350, but yep that replaceable 8gb of ram. Deal breaker. Sorry, but that's just terrible advice. This thing is a great price. For sure it's not PERFECT, but it's very cheap. The GPU particularly will be keeping up with brand new games at 1080p for years to come.

Oh wait this is a SILVER laptop? Yeah naa not worth it.

      • Upgrade the RAM yourself, it's easy to do and costs less than buying one with 16GB

        • I am tempted still - replace my MSI GT72 GTX970M laptop
Going to check the manual on RAM/HDD slots

  • Anyone know the cheapest option to upgrade the ram? Ebay? Is the 4600 better than the i7?

The 60hz screen doesn't bother me since I'll be hooking it up to an external monitor most of the time anyway.

    • +1

      Search staticice.com.au

      • What ram model do i search for?

    • Just look up reviews of the 4600h. It destroys a lot of i7 and i9s. The 4600h can be 20 to 40% faster in lots of workloads vs the i7 10750h. Look up the techspot.com review.

    • $169 3200Mhz CL16 on a laptop, didn't even know that was a thing. Dunno if better deals are out there but this is really fast.

The 4600 is better than the i7, considerably tighter timings on this RAM might actually get you more performance than the benchmarks from reviews suggest because those are probably using CL22 ram.

Also the i7 can't use as fast RAM there's that too

  • +1

Not a fan of Dell's gaming laptops due to cooling and noise issues, for reference, I have an Asus Scar III, i7-9750H + 1660Ti, I run it in silent mode, CPU and GPU both sit at 70c while gaming, fans only producing 35-40db. I'm getting 200+fps in Valorant (max settings, 1080p), taking full advantage of the 144hz screen, kinda wish I'd opted for the 240hz model now!

But in terms of specs the Dell is a VERY good deal though.

    • How much is that?

      • +1

I bought it in Jan for $1700 (after ebay 15% off), prices have risen now and 10th gen model is $2300.

        • +4

so it doesnt make sense to pay 1000 dollars more for a lesser gpu but extra 8gb ram and a better screen.

        • +1

          Prices have ryzen !!
