Why not use whatsapp or another internet based calling service? Data is dirt cheap in third world countrys.
The app is mainly for calling to landlines and mobiles that don't have access to the internet. Surely, you can use whatsapp/viber/another app-to-app calling service, provided that the person on the other end has internet and the same app as you.
But sometimes there are cases when you need to place an international call directly to another number just like you would do it with your cellular carrier (but much cheaper). Let's say you have elderly relatives living in another country, they are not tech savvy and only have a landline phone. Or you need to call a bank that recognizes its clients by Caller ID. Or calling to the airline company in an airport to check on your flight status. Tons of cases like that.
Some of these countries have placed restrictions on internet calling platforms so WhatsApp and the likes are only for texts - no voice calling

I've been using Crazytel from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/493139 and as I am already using it, won't take this one up but would have otherwise. I have really poor reception in my area so mobile calls are almost useless. Since going to NBN I've had to find a way to call local numbers, 13 numbers and the like on the cheap without paying a fixed $10 voip cost. Crazytel is superior than this specifically for 1800 and 13 numbers.
