  • Can't get moneybackco if only available over the phone

  • 1 year warranty is the only (major) downside for me. Anyone know if you can purchase additional warranty on monitors?

  • +1

This is a good deal. Bought this a few weeks ago for $629 from Dell when they had a special. Mine has a three year warranty though.

Seems that Dell are trying to clear the stocks to get a new model in.

    • And as long as they keep the same panel, which hasn't changed over the years, this is when you buy them. I notice the 24" U/S models still have a 6ms response, same as my 2407.

  • Samsung 27" T27a950 are going for around $529. Is this a better monitor to have? It does have 3D and smart hub which is kinda useless if hooked up to pc. But it has built in tuner as well…

Or even the Asus VK278Q for $385

    • +5

It's only 1080p though - the Dell is an entirely different class of monitor

    • +2

Most likely a TN panel aswell, colours would be nowhere near the Dell's

      • That's true. Never thought the colours could ever be so amazing on a computer monitor. The difference is incredible looking at the same image with my laptop screen.

  • Dang that is so tempting, but I think I'll hold off and see what the new models.

This high end monitor can only be comparable to Apple's Cinema Display, which is A$1,199. http://www.apple.com/displays/

Dell's U2711 is Apple Cinema Display minus webcam and speakers, for only A$579, very good deal in my opinion

    • Exactly.

    • How would it compare with normal full HD led tv's? Better than samsung series 8?

      • +1

This is a legit question, i dont know why you got -ve

I'm not an expert but from what I've seen, computer monitors usually have higher resolution than HDTV. Look at samsung series 8, 55" TV max out at 1080p. This dell monitor goes all the way to 1440 at 27". And GENERALLY monitors have higher pixel density than HDTV. This dell monitor has IPS which is what most smartphone uses nowadays.

        • I thought only a handfull used IPS, retina included? Most companies are still using LCD/LED whereas samsung is making a push with organic LEd's.

      • Fair comparison but both panels are not meant to be used for the same purpose.

HD tvs are meant to retain picture quality over a bigger panel. But the IPS can reproduce more colours, to keep the colour of images as close to as the real subject.

If your main use if for media, go buy a HD tv. But this will be a beter monitor for computer and editing use.

I would personally go for a plasma instead, I have the 24" version of this and have compared to the d6900 sammy and an LED counterpart. Plasma gets a closer colours than the LED. The colours on the LED are just to artificial even after going through a calibrator.

  • New Dell P2712H-A materials are now starting to appear online. It is however a 1920x1080 27" PVA panel though. Not really comparable to the 2560x1440 27" IPS panel.

Nice deal, does anyone know the Resolution and Hertz? I would prefer if it could do 75Hz at 2560x1440 (not at lower resolutions)….. Thanks

    • +1

What on earth would be the point of it doing 75Hz, you won't be able to tell the difference? It's an LCD monitor, not CRT. It does 2560x1440 at 60Hz.

      • Thanks for the answer, and well some people I know are sensitive and actually CAN feel the difference and get a headache at 60Hertz when using it for more than an hour or so.. helpful information cheers the specs never include this detail!

        • -1

If you are that convinced it makes a difference go buy a 120Hz monitor then,….

  • the samsung S27A850D is taking over

    • Except is it available in Australia yet and for how much? I would love something without the Dell U2711 grainy anti glare coating.

      • it's up on samsung (au) website , not sure of availability yet but it's there : http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/pc-peripherals/monitor/le…

      • I believe the Apple cinema displays are using the exact same panel as the U2711. The only difference is apple has led backlight and a glossy screen. The only downsides are the ridiculous mark-ups on apple products, and you lose alot of connection options.

        • Correct the Apple Cinema Display and the U2711 both use a LG panel underneath, the same one as the NEC as well.

I bought this monitor for $721 a few months ago (or has it been a year?) so I want EVERY GAMER to know…
Only buy this if you're also going to buy a $500+ graphics card!

I'm lagging left and right when I try to play games on the max resolution with my 5850 and from reading people's experiences, I need two GTX 580s in SLI before I can play most games on max settings. That's approximately $800 for the graphics cards.

    • WEll duh dude, thats a massive resolution xD If i were you i'd lower it to 1080P, thats more then enough for gaming IMHO. IF you really want and can tell the difference with 1440P, then you would definitely have the GTx 580 x2 regardless of resolution9720p and above obviously)…

    • Or you know, just lower the resolution, and you still get to use the full resolution for other stuff and get the great colour reproduction.

    • +1

He's right. I have this monitor and 5870 is average.

Running games in 1080p on this 1440p monitor does not look as good as a 27" 1080p as it's not native and there is interpolation of the pixels.

Enabling gpu scaling in ccc made a big difference though.

Buy this and you are committing to a future of very costly video cards.

    • +1

I'm on /r/buildapc a lot and this is the first time I've ever seen anyone else ever acknowledge that for gaming, lower res, around 1080p or even 720p, can be a good thing (for the 99% of us who don't have unlimited money for dual $500 GPUs.

Does the narwhal midnight at bacontime??

Everyone buying this should be aware this monitor has a very strong anti glare coating. The positive is there is no glare at all, you can use it around bright lights etc. The negative is the coating is very visible especially against white backgrounds which look sandy or grainy.

    • Yep bought one when it was last cheap on ozbargain. Worst thing about this monitor IMHO. Don't get me wrong - love the extra res but the anti glare coating really shits me when sitting next to the macbook pro . You can remove it if you don't care about your warranty, I am very much considering it as it would make this display awesome http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?s=784c1415a…

  • Called this morning and they don't even know if theres enough monitors. said they will call back on monday.

    • Frustrating isn't it. 2 days of waiting :( I wonder if there is a priority list or it is just random.

      • it better be priority, i called before both of you

  • How do these monitors perform for gaming at max resolution? Are they a big step up from a 24inch 1080p monitor?

    • A big step up in terms of resolution, but some people don't like how high the resolution is in some games.

As mentioned above, pushing this many pixels requires a lot of GPU grunt.

  • Just called Dell - no longer available. Back to $899

  • I'm powering two of these bad boys with 1 nvidia 580

  • As others have mentioned the anti-glare coating really lets this model down. I originally ordered two of these the first time they we're reduced to $679.00 due to a coupon error (that Dell honored) about 15 months ago. The coating is so obvious that I initially thought there was a layer of additional plastic still on the monitor that needed to be removed. Wrong! Ended up only keeping one of them as I needed a monitor and assumed that I would get used to coating eventually. Wrong again!

I don't know why people prefer shiny displays, i'll take matte any day of the week. In the right lighting and situation glossy does look crisper and "better" but it just isn't practical unless you spend all your time sitting in the dark.

    • The AG coatings on these dell displays are quite strong. You can see slight "rainbow" effect when viewed close

  • Called Dell earlier this morning to order and they accepted it at the advertised price.

Either they found more stock or I'm going to receive a disappointing email/phone call.

    • Finally received a call back and confirmed my order for the last one left.

      • I just got a call back too, 2 of these boys for $579 each!

        • eh, she told me i got the last one left too.
what the hell, theres a lot of last ones.

        • Did you speak with Lily?

I did wonder a bit about the last one left as a sales tactic, but for this price and knowing it was posted here, I wasn't prepared to risk being difficult or slow ;)

  • I apparently got the last one too. Shrugs.

  • yes it was lily

  • Just got a call from dell, looks like they've just started a new deal for the U2711 for $649 with 3 year warranty. Not quite as good as the $579 but still a good deal.

    • I also got a call just now and can confirm the offer of $649 incl. 3 year warranty for this monitor.

      • They have that deal so often that they should just make it their regular price…

        • -1

I don't think you can compare a deal from the Outlet Site to a deal from the "retail" site. $579 with 1 year warranty vs $649 with a 3 year warranty (when available) is a no brainer for a Monitor of this expense. Firstly, having owned quite a few Dell Ultrasharps, it's not uncommon for them to develop faults late into the 3rd year, and secondly, they can tell you Monitors sold via the Outlet site are "new" as opposed to the more common "certified refurbished" and "previously ordered new" but I question whether any current Monitor being sold via the Outlet is as "new" as those sold through the site proper.

        • -1

Maverick, I have purchased a heap of stuff through the outlet as well as retail.

In Oz until last year all they had was "NEW". They started selling refurb in the past 12 months.

New is new on the outlet, it is stuff ordered but not yet delivered to the end user. It's brand new, never been opened in original boxes and wrapping still. That's been my experience every time and expected from all comments on websites.

        • Fair enough but I don't think so - not from the people I speak to.

And it's OK to disagree but you have to ask yourself this, "for what reason are Dell selling a current product via the outlet with only 1 year warranty?"

PS. And the box means nothing. Practically everything from Dell comes in a well packaged box. eg. when Dell replace a Monitor under warranty many people think the replacement is brand new, such is the newness of the packaging/exterior.
