  • Seems good. Any reason not too get it?

      4gb ram?

      • +21

At this price I would say that 4gb ram is decent

      • +2

2 GB RAM is usually all you get for this price.

    • +6

Any reason not too get it?

      MediaTek

      • +5

Yeah, but if you are coming from a Nexus, massive processing power is hardly the expectation. There is enough.

The bigger problem, for those thinking about it, is no HD on Netflix.

        • +8

"is no HD on Netflix." THere it is, 5 comment. Just what I needed to know. Thanks

          • +5

@cameldownunder: Also, my experience with the Lenovo Tab4, 10 Plus - OS & Security Updates were very lacking, did not receive any OS update beyond the one it came with (7.1) and not many security updates either in the 2 years I was using it.

            • +5

@nismo: Yep, Lenovo seem to be able to make really nice devices (as well as crap ones too) but don't seem to care about OS or Security updates. I really blame the Chinese attitude for this. Seems to be get the product out the door, release new device rinse repeat. Case in point I have the M10 and the older way higher spec Yoga Smart Tab (the 2560x1600 resolution) but it's stunk on Android 7 or 8 from memory with no security updates. Basically an orphaned device.

              • @BlinkyBill: Xiaomi are much better at releases than even samsung imho.

        • +18

Yes and 300 other links telling us why android is better. I mean, really. Is that all you contribute?
I bought my wife a Kindle Fire ( yes, even "worse" than Android ) to watch a netflix series on our flight to Europe. $149.
She was totally fine with it, she uses it even now, to finish an episode before going to sleep or to play ludo king.
She does not need a 1000+ air tablet to do that.

          • +2

            @cameldownunder:

She does not need a 1000+ air tablet to do that.

You can get a new iPad for $529, less on special. Just saying.

            • +9

@PainToad: Still 3.5x the price for the $149 fire tablet.

            • +1

@PainToad: Refurbished ? Still about 4x times more.

              • @cameldownunder:

            • @PainToad: and you get neither a good Apple nor a good Android. But the consumer has spent money and the salesperson has pushed the overstock through the door.

iPad Pro here, direct from Apple. Also a few Android devices.

        • Yep, even Google has abandoned Android tablets in favor of Chrome OS.

        • +10

Cool. Got any links to better $300 tablets then? Thanks

        • -1

          Chrome OS all the way

        • +6

I am using a 10 inch Samsung tablet as my everyday phone. No kidding. And I can't do that with iPad because they know they can do it, but it will compete with their phones. It is a matter of preference. I want a bigger screen for media consumption. I rarely get texts or calls anyway.

        • +3

So I need a tablet to watch movies and nothing else. Should I spend $1k on an ipad or $300 on an Android?

Not sure which one the good idea is.

          Thx

          • -2

            @[Deactivated]:

So I need a tablet to watch movies and nothing else.

Amazon Fire tablets were designed for this purpose. They are also cheaper.

            • +3

@ocoolio: How do you get a FireHD in Australia though?
              Jump through freight forwarder hoops?

              • @ESEMCE: Either that, or stacks of grey-importers are selling it on, for instance, eBay

                • @ocoolio: It's about A$250 to land a freight forwarded refurb Kindle Fire HD 10 2019, 32Gb model
over $300 if you buy new.

For that money you get 2Gb RAM only, no warranty and the hassle of sideloading Play Store with the only advantage really being a marginally faster SoC.
I'm not really seeing the attraction.

                  • -1

@ESEMCE: I don't see any attraction whatsoever in any Android-based tablets when you can buy an iPad for $500 or less.

It's funny how people are unable to target their comments to the ones who came up with the requirements - it was @tren who said they wanted a "tablet to watch movies and nothing else".

Then you asked how to get one in AU, so I told you.

It's bewildering that you think that somehow I had this requirement, then trying to prove it to me that you personally don't prefer the Amazon Fire. Who cares?

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: It's not the question about what you need, it's about how you want to be perceived: A poor sucker on and android tablet ( god forbid being a exotic Chinese brand ) or a person with money on an iPad.

        • +2

Google has recently dropped a lot of their good hardware concepts in favour of average ones, for instance they never released a Wear OS watch, and their latest Pixels aren't as amazing as they could be.

If i recall at the moment only Samsung is doing relatively strong high-end Ipad competitor tablet releases with Android these days.

I picked up the tab s4 a few years ago over the ipad pro for drawing and media consumption. No complaints, OS is slick and as it's samsung it has a relative polish to it.

          It's all preference.

        • +1

people who believe Android on a tablet is a good idea are either delusional or simply unable to read the quite obvious news and statistics

          Ok.

The only reason to buy them if they are ridiculously cheap.

So you're actually recommending to buy this Android tablet. So you are delusional.

          • -2

            @MagicMushroom: And you are ignorant.

            • @ocoolio: You’re forgetting one major problem with iPad for media consumption is the crap aspect ratio .
My tab s6 AMOLED screen is amazing for watching Netflix in full screen no 2 inch black bars like iPad has .
And yeah I have both the only thing that lets down android tablets are app makers sucking iPads knob .

Despite having a full HD screen, this tablet doesn't support Netflix HD. I believe it also has trouble with the Amazon Prime App. So not a very good media consumption tab.

      • What would you recommend as an alternative for a media consumption tablet?

      • I have the Prime App on it, and its working fine - just at a lower resolution as far as I can tell. Probably the same widevine issue. Not a problem for me since its 4K on the TV.

You can also combine with woollies gift card deal now to get an extra 10% off.

I think with this tablet as well Netflix is only SD. You can't get HD on this tablet.

    • -2

What's the use of saying the tablet is FHD then?

      • +4

        Because it is

      • +1

I'd say because Netflix doesn't dictate what hardware you are using.

      • +3

Netflix doesn't stream in HD because Netflix required Videvine L1 copy protection support in order to allow HD. This tablet supports Videvine L3 which Netflix deems not sufficient enough for HD.

It supports Youtube in HD nicely though.

        • I'm a Netflix Noob, so can you watch netflix on this tablet in Any definition at all? If so, is it watchable on a 8"/10" Tab?

        • What is the cheapest Android FULL HD to stream Netflix in HD ?

  • my bad

  • Thanks OP.

    This or Galaxy Tab A 10.1 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/542907 ?

    • I have a Tab A and I'm tempted by this deal, mainly for the improved specs. With 5% off giftcards it will be about $281 compared to $227 I paid for Tab A. But to be honest the Tab A does everything I want it to, except adaptive brightness. If I was to buy a new tab I might go Lenovo.

      • Thanks mate

      • did you get the 2GB RAM 32GB or 3GB 128GB version? How is the performance?

Considering to buy one for small kids - don't really need 128GB of space but I'm thinking 3GB will increase its longevity.

        • just the 2GB. I surf and watch netflix on it. Seems fine for that. Runs Mobile Legends fine which is the only game I play occasionally. Mainly got it to read documents on the go. If the kids kill it I won't mind that much.

        • RAM is for multitasking… So only useful if you're switching between apps and don't want to re-load the app into RAM.
For a kids tablet, it shouldn't really matter.

Storage is important for installing multiple Apps and for saving video for offline play.

The Samsung is likely to get a few software updates too..
The Lenovo likely never will based on their history.

          • @ESEMCE: True but more ram does make things run smoother.

Plus apps and websites get increasingly more memory hungry so the more RAM the longer it'll be able to power modern apps.

Is for the kids so software updates aren't important. It'll likely be extremely locked down anyway.

    • +4

The Galaxy Tab has 2GB of RAM while the Lenovo has 4GB.
(e.g you're browsing the web, start playing a game and then switched back to the browser later, the browser will have to reload it's tabs)

Both have two speakers, however the Lenovo has the speakers on different side of the device meaning it has stereo audio seperation.
Samsung does not — it has two speakers on the same side of the device. However reportedly it still sounds better than the Lenovo.

Samsung is slated to give their 2019 tabs another Android update from 9 to 10.
Lenovo is unlikely to give their tabs a major update, so it's just a 'maybe'.

      • Thanks mate

      • +1

if you get the Galaxy Tab A 128GB model which is about the same price as the Lenovo (according to OP's link), it actually has 3GB of RAM.

  • One small drawback to keep in mind is these ones won't get android updates for long.

    • why is that?

      • Lenovo is poor with delivering software updates, especially for the whole expected 2-3 lifespan. Second-hand support (i.e., development community) is also not particularly strong.

According to GSM Arena, this device comes with Android 9.0, which is nearing 2 years old now, despite the device being released 6 months ago.

        • Thanks for the clarification! Just assumed they would update but had a similar experience with an old Acer tablet I guess. Pretty much obsolete out of the box.

          • @Juice08: They might update, but I certainly wouldn't rely on it.

    • My thoughts exactly, esp re lower spec but similar price Samsung 10 Tab A on sale/epp. My lenovo / motorola G7 Power is lucky to get on OS upgrade then will never get another

    • Are android phones only supported for 2 years still?

  • +1

Jb say it has up 9 hrs battery life not 10.. but i reckon it practically has up to like 5 and after a few months of use that will only get worse

  • this or the yoga smart tab?

was pretty sold on the yoga but 100 cheaper is nice…

just looking for something for my old man to browse the internet/watch stuff/social media.

    • +4

apparently the yoga smart tab is better in terms of audio quality plus the built-in kickstand but Yoga tab quality isn't as good as the old Yoga tabs.
however the yoga smart tab is almost double the price.

both tablets can't do Netflix HD.

  • I would say $255 is a reasonable price.

  • My mother wants a tablet for internet browsing because she's getting old and needs a bigger screen (facebook and such). Is this ideal?

Edit: doesn't have mobile data option, so probably a no go.

    • Be prepared to tack on $150~ for a sim card option

      • Yeah :'(. Unfortunately she doesn't have home broadband, so no wifi.

        • +1

Is tethering from mobile phone an option?

          • @abadacus: My mother does this.

Very easy to do once you tech them (just add/rearrange to top spot it to the android pull down menu)

    • Check out the ipad air deal through Optus. It's marked as expired, but still valid.

  • if anyone wants the review here is the link:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3l8993OjBI

    Summary:
Overall it is a budget tablet however can't stream HD netflix and Lenovo has a track record of poor updates.
Great for general browsing, basic use.

please add more details if you know/own one.

I had this tablet for a few days, but returned it and got a second hand tab S4 instead. Reason was that I was looking for a tablet for the kids that support 3d gaming. This tablet had a midrange CPU, with low range 3D support. 3D mark scores are around 750. For comparison a tab S4 scores at about 2800. It's decent enough if you don't need a 3D gaming tablet though.

      • +1

What's a decent price for a second hand tab s4 these days?

        • +1

I paid $450. Most want more for theirs. I guess anything $500 or lower is ok. The S4 is still fast, and is one of the few that is able to run fortnite at decent framerates.

  • -8

Android basically = flaming turd on a stick

If your kids need a tablet, Android is the go.

Lack of support and poor quality = disposable tablet

    • +2

Lol… bit harsh. Whilst I agree Apple tablets obliterate every Android tablet, they also cost a fair bit more.

      • Weird definition of obliterate then…

  • once you approach $300 you could almost by a Xiaomi Mi pad 4.

    • -3

Plus free CCP spies with every purchase!

      • Is there any reason to expect Lenovo to be any different on this?

        • Don't buy into the China V West argument. They have been working together closely since the secret Henry Kissinger/President Nixon meeting going back as far as 1971/1972 where they did deals to give high tech/training/billions $$$ to China and set up many factories to sell to the world so both sides can get super rich.

    • Mipad 4 plus is another $100+ more? Not exactly almost.

    • +1

I have one, it's pretty good for the form factor but the lack of updates, Widevine L1 and the IPS glow, I probably won't go another Xiaomi tablet for a while. In saying that the performance is pretty good and steamlink streaming works well.

      • +1

Just an update to this in case anyone finds it. I just flashed the mi pad 4 to use Bliss OS on android 10. The tablet is far snappier and addresses all of my concerns except the IPS glow (which isn't really that bad).
