Sony TV turning on when it’s not supposed to

I just bought a Sony TV and installed NBN TELSTRA TV Netflix and Stan. And the TV once switched off by the Telstra tv remote. Then the tv turns on in the middle of the night. Anyone know how to fix it. Google search didn’t help. It was out of date maybe.

Have you tried smudging the house? I’m not saying it’s ghosts, but it’s probably ghosts…
    I’ll show myself out.

Any chromecast or Netflix account linked to it?

Also could be a CEC device triggering the startup. Or something was scheduled to turn on like a TV guide or smart assistant.

      • I think this is the answer. OP should disconnect the hdmi devices to see if it reoccurs.

      • Yep CEC, or someone paired into it with a phone etc (neighbours?)

  • Seriously though, could the Telstra tv be trying to check for update and then switching the tv on via whatever hdmi activation is called?

    Ghosts

  • You have wake by HDMI enabled or similar (HDMI-CEC is what its called on some devices)
and the Telstra TV is waking the tv up from standby

Its in the settings somewhere i know we had a similar issue ages ago.
took a bit of investigating to find it out

you may also need to disable the feature on the telstra TV also

  • My TV occasionally does that. The TV turns on with a black screen (the LED backlight comes on) for about 10 seconds.

Might be when it's scheduled to connect to the manufacturer and send back diagnostic information (and probably a lot of other ACR data… ;) )

  • It's the Telstra TV - it does weird things for me too.

  • If you have a chromecast connected it's possible to setup a Google Home routine to power on and off compatible devices at scheduled times. Maybe it's an erroneous Google Home routine?

smart tv, printers, are the easiest to penetrate. My tv once turned on randomly and opened the youtube app. I immediately disconnect it from my interenet.

Short answer- your tv has been hacked.

What is the exact time it starts on? That may give a clue.

Also disconnect cables and then wait.

Does the picture go fuzzy and a girl starts climbing out of the TV?

  • Could be a setting to auto start ?

Easy fix, turn off at power point before going to bed!

    • That’s what we are doing now

      • It's a known issue, even happening with some of Sony's flagship TV's. Is the android logo on the screen constantly rotating or is it showing actual channels and hdmi connections? It's the software updates that caused it. No fix available even though they say there was. Seems any external device connected to it can cause this to happen. Including stereos, usb drives, optical cable, hdmi device, etc. Either unplug any connections or turn off at the switch is the only way to stop it. I've had it happen about 10-15 times over two years. Majority of the time it was the usb hard drive causing it. The android logo would come on the screen as if its updating the firmware. Stay on like that permanently until I turn it off at the switch. Only once it came on with an actual TV channel.

  • We had this happen a few times, and it scared the life out of us, since it always seemed to happen late at night when we were asleep. Until we realised we'd programmed certain shows to come on (using the TV Guide function) thinking we'd still be awake to watch them, but had ended up going to bed before that show was due to start. When it got to the right time, the TV had turned itself back on so we could watch the show. We make sure we don't program late night shows anymore, just in case. ;)

  • I have had this happen to me on my Sony TV, maybe only 3 times in the roughly 8 months have owned it the last time about 2 weeks ago. The only thing connected to it is a PS4 which is always off during the night. One night it turned itself onto Netflix with the promo for The Ring, the wife almost shat the bed

Don't leave it in stand by, problem solved

  • Disconnect all the HDMI devices and see. Some devices can turn the tv (HDMI CEC) on by itself.

  • My bet is the Telstra TV and wake on HDMI
Turned it off in options now it doesn't happen

  • Thanks guys the problem is fixed

    • What was it?

      • The boogie monster screwing with the remote…

    • What was it?

  • Seemed to be the boogie monster. We’ve been turning everything ioff at the power point for about 4 weeks. And it just seemed to stop

  • Mine did it again last night
