Kogan Smarterhome Smart Plug 4 Pack $50, Garage Door Opener $56 (Was $149), Pan and Tilt Camera $46 (Was $119), 32GB SD Card $6

120

This all started with a thread a few days back for the TP-Link Smart Plugs. I have been keen on a smart plug for a while now, just to boil the jug of a morning. In that thread, Kogan plugs were mentioned as a 4 pack for $50 so I thought - why not boil four jugs? Jokes. Then I spotted the other Kogan “SmarterHome” gear which looked well priced and heavily discounted. Always wanted a garage opener. Why not experiment with a camera for the bedroom? Jokes. I figured I could get a further discount (on two items) and free shipping using Kogan First free 5 day trial. I needed SDCards check it out 32GB Class 10 6 bucks! And a few QFF points as well… Note without ‘Kogan First’ the camera and garage door opener are $15 more for each.

Kogan First 'free' 5 day trial for free shipping

      • Sweet!

  • Anyone have any experience with any of this Kogan "Smarter Home" gear? Im looking at getting some outdoor cameras and a video doorbell. I dont need it to be the best but I would like it to work well with Google assistant and home hub.

    • It's been a while since I last looked at it. The products are based on tuya firmware so you can use the tuya applications. It integrates with Google Assistant although some tuya devices do not show video on the hub. Better check first if you want it to display on the hub.

    • I've got the Kogan bulbs, which as noted above are Tuya. They have worked fine so far, they don't do a very good natural light but they have been more than useful enough so far.

Garage door opener is showing as $69.99 for me ?

    • Kogan First 'free' 5 day trial to save the extra $15 - as well as $15 off the camera - realise this trial may not suit some

      • Cheers. Has anyone using the garage opener yet ? Any feedback ?

        • Looks pretty basic - it's just an internet-controlled relay that grounds a wire to simulate a wall switch. You can build your own for $20, although you wouldn't get the status sensor.

Here's the manual if you're curious - easy install: https://assets.kogan.com/files/usermanuals/KASHWLGRGDA_QSG2.…

        • plenty of cheaper ones on ebay that will do the exact same thing.

          eg:
          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/WiFi-Wireless-Remote-Control-Gar…

          • @nisbne: No, they do not "do the exact same thing".

            • @McFly: Can you elaborate more?
I'm currently looking between these two and seems like quite similar.
Although the type of sensors for knowing if the door is open/close are quite different but they do the same thing.
Installation wise pretty much the same.
Apps are different, but should work the same way I guess since both can integrate with Google & Alexa.
Other than that, the difference would be physical appearance.

Do you use any of them?
If yes, can you provide some feedback of the pro/cons?

        • I use gogogate2, although a lot more expensive.

  • Question for anyone that has the Kogan smart plug

Do the USB ports work if the powerpoint is 'off'?

    • +1

      Yes!

      • Thanks

    • +1

Yes, the USB ports have no smart capability. They are on 100% of the time and can't be switched off.

      • +2

        Username doesn't check out..

        Thanks for the response :)

      • Can you monitor the power usage of the USB on the energy meter or is that for the plug socket only?

        • +1

Pretty sure it's only the switched 240v part.

        • energy meter only monitors the plug, not the USBs

  • I would also like to know how well these smart plugs work. I take it they phone home to china and they need to be flashed with Tuya if you want them local?

This post also reminded me of the epic description from this guy

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/499455

    • +2

"Had sex. It was good. Just like I remembered."

    • They already have Tuya firmware and don't require flashing. Tuya is an ecosystem of IoT devices that maintain a constant internet connection via Wifi, and can be operated via mobile phone app that contacts Tuya's cloud servers.

They can almost certainly be re-programmed with alternative firmware like Tasmota or ESPHome using TuyaConvert OTA flashing method, or hard-wired with a serial progammer if you're keen. This eliminates the "phone home to China" requirement, but does require that you provide an alternative control method.

I note that Kogan's description for the garage door opener says it can only be used with panel-lift doors, not roller doors - but I can't see why that's the case…..

      • +3

Sorry, yes my mistake, i was referring to being flashed with Tasmota to eliminate the communication with external servers so i can connect it to a local HA.

      • +1

The roller door mystery has been solved. The door status sensor is designed to stick to the inner face of the door and sends a signal when its orientation has been changed by 90 degrees. This part would be crushed in the roll on a roller door.

        • I am hoping that is an error in the item description (I hadn't read that!) - as the photo and diagram shows a roller door clearly. The diagram shows to wire the sensor into the terminals of the roller door motor. I have a long speaker wire connected to a switch to operate the roller door so this new sensor must use the same terminals to trigger the smarterhome controller. I'll let you know when I wire it - or hopefully someone has one already that can confirm.

          • @debo:

as the photo and diagram shows a roller door clearly
Does it? The ones I can see definitely show a panel door.

            • @Astronaut Joe: yep scrolling through the photos - photo number four shows a kid pushing up a roller door not a flat panel door - and in the description the diagram clearly shows the roller rails curving up and across toward the motor. I can see it says "Only works on garage doors that rise and turn 90 degrees, not roller doors." but maybe that means the old type ones that only rolled into a roll and not flat towards the motor - again hoping someone that has one can confirm.

              • @debo: Photo's too zoomed in, you can't tell if it's a sectional panel door or what kind of door. The diagram looks like a panel door to me.

The sensor sticks to near the bottom of the door. Would yours get crushed or would the door stop rolling and leave the sensor in a horizontal orientation?

                • @tikei: My rollerdoor is exactly like the one diagrammatically depicted in the Description section "Compatibility check" - it goes on to say "Connect the A and B terminals of your device to the garage operator using a wire with stripped ends or a paper clip and if the garage opens then it’s compatible with the Kogan SmarterHome™ Wireless Garage Door Opener Controller." Nothing will be crushed.

                  • @debo: answer is in our face people - someone posted the manual much earlier! so the sensor sticks to the inside of the door (bottom centre) and the other part wired to the door controller. So it would roll safely with the door up and flat when it is open.

  • Any idea if these smart plugs will fit side by side, or would I lose an outlet?

    • +4

They fit perfectly side by side. They're my favourite smart plug just for that reason alone.

      • Awesome. Every power point in my house will have one!!!

  • +1

The 4pack of power monitoring plugs were cheaper at $39 7-weeks ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/534612

    • yeah saw that - too bad i wasn't looking then!

  • +1

These Kogan brand smart products are excellent!

  • These smart plugs work OK but the Smarter Home skill doesn't seem to exist in Alexa, which is a pain as I've linked my Kasa Smart Strips to Alexa and want to manage my devices in one place.

  • Anyone measured how many Watts the plugs use in standby?

Have Aldi Bauhn plugs with USB charging ports, but no energy monitoring. They use about 0.3-0.4W when in standby and nothing connected to USB. This is acceptable for my use as having them on timer cycles and easy turn off from my phone, allows me to save a lot more phantom power than this small amount of standby power.

Just wondering if the energy monitoring with these plugs adds much of a hit to the power use in standby (or even when turned on).

    • Answering my own question.

Having a look at the previous deal thread for the smart plugs https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/534612
a comment by firedomain in that thread suggests that they probably use an additional 0.9W for the energy monitoring component.

That comes to just under 8kWh electricity consumption per plug per year.

At a ballpark of 40c per kWh that comes to about $3 per plug per year for the enery monitoring component.

Happy to be corrected if anybody else has any specific numbers though :-).

  • POST PURCHASE REPORT: Received all the Kogan SmarterHome stuff – works a treat – powerpoint kicks of the kettle – pan and tilt camera works fine – and loving the garage opener. Probably all the confusion because the generic term rollerdoor – this item can only work with a ‘sectional panel lift’ garage door as the sensor goes from vertical to horizontal when opened to give the alert. The wifi trigger plugs into a powerpoint and you run a wire to the door motor. Anyhow works a dream. I also bought a $30 Kogan SmartWatch so the alerts come through to the watch as well. A good start for home automation for me without big expense - next thing a Nest Mini.

    • Hi, I am currently have Avanti garage door opener. I was wondering with the testing part of it. I think as long as we have the wall points connected to the terminal, Kogan's device will be compatible right ? I am just too worried to use the plier to short it, worry that it will ruin the motor, etc.

      • no need for a plier test. just connect straight to the wall point.

    • Nek minnit - CCP invasion :)

  • Tried to purchase with Free 5 days Kogan First trial, error in payment and when retry, I have to pay $89 for the 365 days membership. WTF ???

    • ring kogan support - they are really good on the phone

  • Do the smart plugs work with 5ghz network? I've got some from shopping express and they only work on 2.4ghz which I am planning to disable

    • i believe 2.4 only

  • Just got the pan and tilt camera just be warned that it won't follow an object when it detects motion. That's what they say it does but it doesn't do that

    • I have the camera and just using it to view so far - up to now I had overlooked this feature of motion tracking - no I havn't seen it track at all - but maybe it needs the memory card - which leads me to a question - the manual does not show and I have not figured out where the MicroSD card goes? Have you put in a memory card?
