Huawei Mate 20 Pro (Unlocked Optus Stock) $599 at Harvey Norman

1460

Huawei Mate 20 Pro, Optus branded/stock but unlocked. Considering $599 is a mid-range type of price, the specs (battery in particular) are really good, I think. Plenty of stock in SA it seems, hopefully same elsewhere.

Edit - just letting you all know the only Optus app pre-installed on the phone is MyOptus, which can be uninstalled. The phone also updates to EMUI 10.

A lot of great feedback here but $599 for a 2 year old phone….is it just me or is it a bit too much for its age?

    • Same question too.

      • Correct - go the Umidigi Power3 (Brand new and 50% more battery) and keep $393 for other bills

        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000409487646.html?spm=a2g0s…

        • Much slower charging, no local warranty (if any), 4GB vs 6GB of RAM, lower-res screen that's IPS vs OLED in the Huawei, much worse CPU, no waterproofing…the list goes on. Not in the same league unfortunately.

          • @donnot: You're completely correct. But it's got it on battery power and it's a nice enough mid-range phone. Who drops their phone in the pool anyway? At this price just buy another.

Buying big name brands and looking for value for money is like herding cats.

I checked and their most expensive model has the OLED for $370 and is 6GB / 256GB config but still no waterproofing and warranty as you point out. Been buying straight from China for over 5 years and have learnt the biggest pitfall is battery and type A USB connector longevity. The advent of larger batteries and Type C makes them a no-brainer unless you're just a keeping up with the Joneses IMHO.

            • @[Deactivated]: Sorry, I read your comment as if it costed $393 rather than saving 393. Much more reasonable at that price! Though, I'd probably still pick a local Oppo A52 over that.

              • @donnot: Okay, now I'm feeling less happy. The Oppo has many advantages over dealing with China for similar money + a Snapdragon CPU and 2 year warranty!!!!! But I try to stay in the $180-$250 zone and still reckon I can squeeze more out of China for those dollars. Less thanks to Malcolm / Harvey and their GST….

            • @[Deactivated]: Mate 20 & Pro last for 2 days. How many days you need?

    • the phone itself is brand new! :P

Well you have to consider, if you saw a Galaxy S9 for $599 it would be a good price. Pixel 3a is roughly two years old I believe(?) and not as good spec-wise but starts at $649. Each to their own but for these types of specs which are more than enough for myself and assuming many others, $599 is excellent value.

Wouldn't it be more reasonable comparing the specs to other phones available in this price range?

anywhere selling a dual sim that I could try price match?

  • Best camera at this price range?
    How is low light?
    Selfie sucks I read.

    • +1

The camera is still one of the best smart phone cameras there is. Night shots are great.

Yes, selfie is ass and video isn't great either.

  • What would be (if any) noticeable down side going from this phone from a samsung s8? I can see no headphone jack (but USB-C headphones provided). I'm just trying to work out if I shift to this Huawei and will I say…"AHHHH, it doesn't do [insert function]"…thanks in advance!

I came from an S8+ before this - battery was a massive improvement, phone was much faster and camera was a noticeable upgrade. Only thing I can think of that I missed was Google Daydream VR support, but I didn't use it much…

    • This is faster than the S8. It does everything the S8 does, but better (except SD card slot - it uses a Nano card which are more expensive).

  • when does this end?

  • +1

I just bought this to upgrade my Galaxy S8. It's definitely a lot better. The screen looks better, camera is better. More importantly there's no lag when I type in Messenger etc. I didn't realise there was a delay when I was typing on my S8. I must have gotten used to it.

    • do you know when does this price end?

      • I assume when they clear all their old stock.

  • Thanks. Bought one. The specs on this phone are still quite good and comparable to high end devices. I reckon its better to buy last years flagship top end model rather than a 2020 midranger.

  • Darn, no stock at my local HN. Delivery is $15 now.

    • I had it delivered for $5.95 in two business days in Melbourne.

      • I'm in sydney, probably that's why. I kept hesitating and delivery went up. How's the phone? Any green tinge on screen?
