  • Feel sorry for all those people that shelled out 2200 on release for this. Probably should have been priced under 2k to begin with. Good price with cb, sorry op didn't realise it was pre GST.

Shame they run so hot and performance isn't quite at 1660ti level.

    • Could be the way AMD temperature sensor is different to Intel, it shows hotter than Intel but it's not..I'm guessing.

      • Good guess..

Its been speculated that it could be that but multiple reviewers have made mention of it and some haven't so could be true could be false. Close to 100c is a bit of a worry.

Disabling turbo boost using regkey drops the temperature by 20c though without too much performance hit.

    • Some reviews are showing the 5600m in between 2060 and 2070 mobile depending on the title. Guess the Asus G14 has the best cooling, considering how cool the AMD Ryzen 4900HS runs in that smaller chassis vs this Dell. Unfortunately even some of the Intel 9 and 10th gen gaming laptops run really hot due to inadequate cooling and thermal throttle.

G14 doesn't run that cool, only after the registry tweak does it run around 80c

See - https://youtu.be/6oS8kbG-oZU for thermals test, gets to high 90s, after reg tweak drops 20 degrees.

As for 5600m performance being near 2060 and 2070 performance level - it sits around a 1660ti in some titles, some just below it but draws more power too.

2060s and 2070s aren't exactly standardized either. You have max P max q super variant and the new higher wattage performance edition. Manufactures are also free to set their own wattage too and shared heat pipes/thermal design can also play a part in better or worse fps not to mention does the laptop have a mux switch or not?

    • +1

yeah this! jarrodstech review kinda put me off it. Will just wait until COVID tax settles & AMD is in laptops with better cooling solutions

  • Is this model physically available in any store to look and touch?
I only saw xps-s and inspirons in jb

    • +1

No, it's only been out in the last month or so online.

I got the G14 and it is about time that AMD provided a software update to fix the overheating. They were claiming that it runs cooler than Intel. under load i dont see it at the moment given the lower power draw of Ryzen 4000.

    • I take it youve seen the regfix to disable turbo which drops temps significantly?

      • +2

        Yeah I have implemented that.
Still, I am technically paying for performance that I am unable to use.

The G14 overall is great except for three drawbacks:
        1. Overheating
        2. Worse keyboard backlight
        3. Fans running even in idle

        • +1

That's very true, if it makes you feel better it's a similar case with an Intel laptop too if you really want to reduce thermals (sure undervolting helps but real gains are in downclocking)

Unless you have a a decent cooling solution and thicker chassis (2 things the market seems to be going away from) then it's going to be hot.

They are the 3 drawbacks I've seen most reviewers point out along with the slow ie 40ms response time for the 144hz panel.

Unfortunately there seems to be no unicorn laptop.

They all have their issues in one way or another and very much a case of pick your drawbacks.

        • I was going to say, how about 4. Ghosting? 👻

Have you noticed this at all, or not personally been affected? I thought the G14 was the AMD 4000 series to get! But then that awful (apparently) response time.

The G14 is the only one I've used in person, at a Harvey Norman, and I kind of wanted it then and there. But I think it wasn't a great spec, containing the 4600hs and costing $2399 so I left it. Megabuy has the 4800HS for under $2200.

And it's only a 1650 ti in it, isn't it? Unless you want to crack out $2700 for the 4900HS and a 2060.

Can't stop thinking about it though… But it's exactly as Dazza says, there's no perfect build. And even if there was, it'd cost $3000.

@JownehFixIT: Yeah this is just it.
I got the 4800HS version from Shopping Express eBay for $2k.

The bad response time of the screen sure does cause some ghosting. Personally i didnt think with the slow screen response time it was worth it to shell out an extra $800.

Like you said the Razer Blades are pretty good but price wise, upper of $3k.

This is a great price. I was sooo tempted to buy one at launch.
Value for money is good, just live with a plastic case instead of metal casing.

I got the G14 with Ryzen 9 and am very happy - works really well for me (yes, have done the registry hack).
No issues so far with dual screen with lid closed

  • I wish there was a 17" edition.. Definitely pull the trigger if it was available to replace my older Metabox 17"

  • Never used cashback but familiar with the concept and read terms and conditions and it says we cant use a coupon so it means that i cant use HONEY7? although it is being applied on the product but if used i wont get the cashback as it says only coupon listen on their website are valid but i was not able to find them

    • No codes are approved for use with cb.

  • Its so difficult to either but this or asus tuf

  • If I plug this into an external 144hz monitor, will it be compatible?

  • Hi OzBargainers, I have a question related to this laptop. Would this laptop be suitable for a light music recording and video editing usage?

    • The 4800H should do very well in video editing. It is comparable to Intel's i9s.
