Well. It can do a lot more than that, and if all you want is storage you should probably just buy an SD card for your mobile phone.
I would say nowadays ipods are for people who specifically want a high res audio player when their phone is basic and doesn't have a halfway decent quad dac.
SD card doesn't apply if the said mobile is also an iPhone 🙂
Or pixels and many more for that matter.
Does iPods play higher quality music than iPhones? Genuine question, I always thought that iPhones would be on par.

Can’t really use it for offline music as it takes ages to load. Just my opinion.Generations ago, an iOS update essentially bricked my Ipod Touch. Switched to android and never looked back.
Same. It amuses me that Apple users often criticize Android phones for the perceived lack of updates, I have that experience with Apple products only. They notably admitted to slowing old phones down to 'save the battery' (and no, back then this could not be disabled).
You can use echo as chrome cast device to connect to your old stereo speakers though.

Just checked with Casula on the Echo Dot. Saying the price is still $49 and the code on the clearance bins at Chatswood corresponds to the 2nd Edition, not 3rd
Staff at Chatswood probably stuffed up. You can just make out in the op's photo that the boxes in the clearance bin are the 3rd gen Charcoal models.

The price applies to 2nd gen Echo Dot and its national. Many stores OOS or have single digit stocks.
I grabbed the other and last clearance for the Tp-Link Starter combo with (1) Echo Dot 2nd gen; (2) Tp-Link smart bulb; and (3) Tp-Link Smart plug for $49.
