Thought that was an ARM Mac Mini initially until I saw the Core i3……

    • +4

surely these are literally worth crap since they already said they're moving to ARM

also gotta have some balls to charge $1k plus for an i3!

      • +1

They should be supported for 3 - 4 years with OS updates. The question people will need to ask themselves is whether that's long enough. The systems will also still function past Apple issuing OS updates, although updates for apps may also dry up as devs transition to ARM.

        • +1

definitely not for me. ARM is the future.

      • -4

They aren't moving to ARM, they're moving to their own chips.

        • +2

Close - they are moving to ARM, because Apple's processors are ARM-based. ARM is just a design blueprint that various CPU/SOC makers use.

        • Arm is the architecture, like x86 for Intel and AMD processors. Apple have their own custom design for cores running this arch, whereas most mobile manufacturers use Arms "stock" designs for their own.

That's as far as I understand it anyway. It's pretty much the same as desktop Intel VS AMD, only Arm is both the architecture and company name.

          • @N1NJ4W4RR10R: lol #confidentlypedantic to that guy

The reason why I would point out ARM is that it indicates that they are now a part of the same family as Android, Nintendo Switch, Raspberry Pi and more importantly, Ipad and Iphone.

Also I though it was general knowledge that Apple used their own processors in their mobile products and expanding their use to laptops and desktops was just expected at this point given Intel's poor performance of late.

It’s an i3 8100, so a quad-core at least and definitely more than enough power for most users.

  • "Mini Mac"

    LOL

What? It's cute! I like it!

my 2012 mac mini was around $600, installed mac os externally and its speed is on par with my macbook pro.

    • How do you Install mac os externally ?
I have old Mac mini that needs a boost

      • i used that samsung ssd which was around 99. just google how to download catalina, its so easy.

      • Without it being online?

You have to download the installer, which is a few GB, image it to a USB and boot from the USB.

        • have to download first in the internal drive of mac mini.

    • Why do you need to install MAC externally?

      • He probably wanted to keep the 1TB HDD that came with it for storage and have an external SSD to run the OS. This avoids fiddling around with any internal parts while bringing the machine into the next decade ;)

      • because i dont have a spare internal ssd, its much simpler to use an old external drive am not using anyway.

  • Pay an extra dollar and make it a meal deal - includes fries and a drink.

      huh?

  • the old mac mini were easy to upgrade the size and ram, are new ones soldered ?

the arm thing would be a concern because i get more than 6 years from my apple computers before upgrades ….

    • No, still as versatile as ever to user upgrade. Two SODIMM slots in the 2020 models.

      • +2

Storage chips have a lifespan. Soldering them to the board in a desktop machine is known as a 'dick move'.

      • Not exactly. 2012 had upgradable HDD + RAM, 2018/2020 is RAM only. SSD is soldered.

  • I don't see how that's a very good deal compared to the new ones Apple announced:

    https://www.apple.com/au/mac-mini/specs/

you're saving $100, but getting a less powerful computer? Or am I missing something?

    • They are the same. Title incorrect, but the model number checks out.

    • What are you referring to exactly? The 2020 update to the Mac mini was a storage increase / price drop.

Old mac minis go forever. Still using a 2012 model. Upgraded to 16g ram and a 1tb sad. Catalina is the last update for that model though. I'm also running an older imac for the kids and a MacBook air 2011. They can't move to Catalina, can't knock the longevity though Air still gets 90 mins battery life after 9 years.

I guess I would be cautious with this buy as long term support is likely to be less than previous models. Moving to a different chipset means they have to split resources to support old models and new, sometimes old code holds development back too, think 16/32/64 bit for Windows or Apple moving ppc to intel.
Apple has cash and can afford to do that, how long for is the question…

      2012 mac minis go forever.
because everything after them was a downgrade

      • I have retired my 2012 mac mini to NUC because it cannot push two 4k monitors …
However, it is still a workhorse in 1080p and faster than my new i5 nuc (Mac OS vs Win10, 16GB vs 32GB)

2012 mac mini the best mac mini in history because you can upgrade the storage, and they have to stop them getting the Big Sur to push the sale up XD.

        • I can't retire mine yet i think but once it is no longer supported i will have to consider my options. Security will be the main driver, the other macs I own are casual use. The Mini is my daily driver.
I could probably run Ubuntu on it eventually and retire the HP N40L Microserver that runs my Ubiquiti suite.

  • I just bought the i5 model for $1462.05 at Officeworks with price beat guarantee
