    • You can't compare a vertical stack unit with a drawer unit. They operate differently and give different results.

That said there are 10 tray drawer models on eBay for well under $200. I've had one for years and am super happy with it. It's plastic, not stainless, but considering its not permanently on the bench (spends its off time in the garage, on time in the laundry) that doesn't bother me. Plastic trays are fine too for me - no breaks after years of use and going in the dishwasher.

  • I want to make my own biltong but man this gonna be a long time till break even 😂

    • What is the difference between beef jerky and Biltong?

      • The accent of the person eating it :)

      • +1

Big difference, Biltong is air dried at 30c and Jerky is cooked at 70c

Biltong is soft and moist unlike Jerky.

    • You don't need any special gear to make biltong.

  • Bought a Hydrator once, but Customs seized it.

    • +1

Maybe they had a lot of… garden material… they needed to remove the moisture from…

Good price, been kicking myself not getting the 6 tray version for about $170 pre covid. Prices for the 6 and 10 tray version has gone through the roof since covid.

If you're not in need of 10 trays - the Biochef Arizona Sol model here is pretty awesome, gets high reviews on amazon - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Food-Dehydrator-BioChef-Arizona-…

You can offer $190-$200 and they accept it.

Just to add to this - another OzBargainer linked me to it (from another post) so thank you whoever it was!

    • Is that the same unit in a smaller size? Looks like it's plastic whereas the one in the original deal is stainless steel. I have no idea how good/bad a plastic one would be, but feels wrong…

  • The difference is that Devanti model is stainless steel with glass door whereas all the other dehydrators have plastic bodies ( only the racks are stainless steel. I got the 6 tray version back in January and couldn’t be happier !

Why would you pay for water and then pay for a dehydrator and electricity to evaporate your hard earned money? After all the fruit and veg we paid for are mostly for the juice within it.

    • Less water more flavour.

Also last longer for covid hoarding.

Why would you pay for thinners only to let them evaporate after you apply the paint to the wall?

Why would you pay for water during a shower only to let it run down the drain?

      • In summer I try to shower in the garden… bcos my last water bill was $550!!! Something not right about the consumption but I'm trying to figure out what.

      • Pff you don't collect your shower water and drink it?

        • Nope, but I collect my RO filter waste water to water the garden.

I hot a devanti 9 stainless tray/shelf. Plastic body. Slide down removable door from catch for about 180 after covid started. Very happy.
I've tried dehydrating everything. It's heaps of fun.
I dehydrated about 12 kg of frozen diced veg. Really reduces nicely.

My favourite dehydrated fruit at the moment is kiwi fruit. It is very tasty and each slice lasts a long time. I think I'd prefer a kiwi fruit slice to lollies.

BTW, I tried dehydrating watermelon. I ended up throwing it away. It was a bit of an odd texture but more so I felt uncomfortable eating it because watermelon is hazardous when not handled properly.

  • I literally CAN NOT believe this, spent all last week looking for deals on this unit right up to last night!
I bought the last 8 tray one of these https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0845N9VQB/ for $380.

Still not confirmed, should I cancel and get a Devanti?
    BioChef 800w 8 trays vs Devanti 1000w 10 trays + $10.

  • So which one is best for beef jerky?

    • Most should be ok for beef jerky as long as they get up to the right temperature (>70C) and heat/dry evenly.

I went for this one as the other dehydrators I've had don't have the same capacity and need to keep moving the trays around to get even dehydration.

I've had Sunbeam and Excalibur (plastic trays cracked) and other cheaper ones with metal tray that wouldn't get up to the right temp for jerky or don't work evenly.

    • Bought the Devanti for my son-in-law for Xmas ( he loves making beef jerky).
So impressed with the unit, I bought one for myself 3 weeks later.

    • Any tray one like the one in the OP or I linked is better than a stack one because the tray ones get better air circulation so everything drys more evenly

  • What do people recommend for a cheap 6 tray or so unit? Is the devanti linked above for $190 generally the one people buy? I don't know anything about this, but feel uncomfortable buying a plastic unit… And if I'm going plastic, I kind of feel like I might as well just buy a really cheap one instead. Again, don't know anything about dehydrators
