Oppo Reno 5G - 256GB (Black or Green - Optus Variant) - $699 @ 5GWORLD

160

WOW it happens again! They have matched HN price(sold out already). Not as good as the 4G deal but $699 for the 5G model is still a good deal! Looks like both black and green are available.

Mod: OP works for Oppo but did not disclose it (sockpuppeting).

    • yeah I know but missed. then they put it back to $699.

  • This is the model which uses external 5G Modems. So would avoid if possible.

    • what affect does this have? When you say external, do you need a dongle?

      • +2

External means the 5G modem is not in the SOC. It is an extra chip on the motherboard so extra power consumption.

  • How does the Optus Variant differ? Will this run with a Vodafone Sim?

    • +1

Besides a few pre-installed apps (which you can uninstall) I don't think they differ. Another OzBargainer who has the telstra variant said they have the same firemware numbers and both received the update ColorOS7 at the same time.

      • Oh easy! Sounds like a great deal in this case. Might finally replace my Oneplus 5

      • Can you uninstall or just disable? (Is it built into the rom)

For updates do you have to wait for the Optus approved release or just use OPPOs official release?

    • I think Optus variant is single SIM only.

  • +1

Got dual SIM for 499 pretty good value

    • where from? url please.

      • Search oppo Reno on ozbargain

BTW 5g version not update to color os7 yet 4g already updated. Color os6is very hard to use

    • The Optus variant I bought is on colouros 7. It is out.

      • I have both. Still no update for me.

        • I have telstra, cos7 two weeks ago

  • Anyone had any reviews for this phone? the good and the bad?

    • +1

i have the 4G version, so far its good. a few things i want to point out which i dont really like compare to other phones i used.

finger print under screen sucks imo. gets my finger 3/5 times. its slower when you in bright day light as well.
the flash light on the pop up camera isnt the best imo, i use the flash light a lot and having it pop up annoys me
when im using app, ie: fb or chrome. sometimes it freezes, i need to press the open all app button and click back in to unfreeze it.
      phone is heavy

however the camera is good for $500-600, battery life is amazing and with fast charging, its awesome, phone is fast.

I would buy again if its dual sim $499

      • thanks for the review!!!

For 499, it is a good deal

I dont really want to pay 699, since I dont even use 5g though

My review coming from a Pixel 3 (and long term iOS user).

Security: As above, the finger print sensor sucks, just outright it is terrible, I turned it off 50% hit rate, sometimes I would need to scan it about 8 times. Face unlock requires the little camera to swivel all the time, so haven't even tried that.

Camera: The camera is fantastic in day light (when its not laggy). It is rated very highly, and the photos are excellent, but the pop-up selfie camera is a little bit annoying at times (in terms of integration with apps). It glitches a lot and opens and closes a number of times when using it in apps. It also seems to attract a lot of sand/dust. To be honest, would prefer it just be on the screen. I've noticed sometimes the camera will lag and delay shots. Low light especially. Trying to capture photos of someone moving can be hard. Was also pretty disappointed in the low light photos (seemed to smooth a lot with no AI on).

Screen: Screen size is fantastic. Nice and bright colours, and it is huuuuge which makes using it for apps a real joy.

Operating System/Environment: ColorOS7 just launched. I find it is a little bit buggy compared to Pixel stock android 10 and it lacks a good "discover/smart" page (the one when you scroll left and view a brief overview of stuff). Not a big deal but I used the google discover page a lot for news etc on my pixel. My main gripe is with the navigation. It seems a bit wonky at times (again depending on the app you're in). Some apps swipe properly some apps it takes a number of swipes (pixel always worked). The scrolling is also a little stuttery, but you get used to it. I also wish the notification bar could be smaller instead of taking up the whole screen when you swipe down. Haven't experienced any freezes as above, its mostly good - it's just hard coming from iOS and stock Android 10.

Speakers: The main speaker is positioned at the top of the phone which makes it awkward for calls. You kind of need to hold it awkwardly positioning the speaker in your ear on an angle.

Battery: The battery is fantastic however, there appears to be a bug with google assistant which drains it like crazy so I had to turn off google assistant completely.

Other features: There is no wireless charging, and no water resistance rating which is weird since I came from a Pixel 3 which is insanely outdated specs wise yet this had both.

really does sound like a buggy phone…

maybe ill wait for the pixel 4a

        • It's really not too bad. They're not game changers and you need to remember I'm comparing it to stock android and iOS. It probably is similar running to other skinned androids (like Huawei's android skin EMUI or OnePlus' OxygenOS. Not sure how it compares to Samsung's skin.

      • I thought I would also add there's a weird bug with the automatic display brightness that always sets it to the lowest which is way too low. I tried adjusting it multiple times - just turned off the auto.

        • Mine works. Toggled power saving mode?

          • @DefiantDS9: Yep. A bunch of other users had the same issue when I was looking it up. I should say correct what I said - it is not always.

  • $699 is not really a good deal in my opinion, you can get the Xiaomi Poco 2 pro 256gb for $771 after discount code (CART3). https://www.tobydealsau.com/en_AU/product/xiaomi-poco-f2-pro…

Only 72 dollars difference but you get SD865, ufs 3.1, WiFi 6, bigger and better battery (4700 vs 4029), faster 30w fast charging. But the poco2 is a grey import so if you worry about warranty then maybe choose oppo

    • This. I'm considering selling my Reno and upgrading.

      • Same. It’s just so buggy. I wish I read reviews. You can’t even install custom roms. The poco was $650 the other day too!

  • just to save the sanity of people who buy this. When you plug the 4G ColorOS7 variant of this phone in to charge the screen will come on. It will stay on. The phone won't go to sleep. To get the screen to turn off you have to physically turn it off with the power button or double tap the screen. Was driving me nuts trying to find the setting to make it sleep while charging … but alas there is no setting. You have to manually turn off the screen. Possibly the same for this 5G version.

    • does not happen to me, mines off while charging

      • Mines off while charging too. I do get random freezes using the Brave browser, not common though.

  • For the same price, another option is realme X3 super zoom. Just released yesterday.
