Unadvertised AirAsia Sale: Return Fares AU to Europe $900 Inc Tax

860

Adioso's price drop detector found a bunch of bargain international AirAsia fares this morning that don't appear to have been advertised, notably that Europe fares are available incredibly cheaply, including Melbourne to Paris return for $900 on the 30th of November this year! Screenshot here.

I have no idea how many fares there are and when they expire (ie: they could disappear at any moment), but they're definitely really available at time of writing.

Some other good ones to look at:

To find out more options, you can always do an "international" search, ie:

great idea… good luck on that.

  • air asia normally has a whole bunch of fees has this included all of them?

    • This includes taxes/etc, though does not include baggage (which is charged per weight, so varies depending on how much you want). Bags are $17 for 15kg per segment, so you'd be looking at an extra $68 for a return flight to Europe. Screen shot of other charges here.

  • At least they currently don't charge for toilet usage, but you never know in the future.

    • +1

credit card/ Coin operating toilets accepting different currencies.

      • +1

in europe you pay 50 cents to use a public bathroom.
but there is usually someone cleaning it all day.

so it wouldnt be too hard to suggest to Europeans.

however, on a long haul flight, you might find people end up bringing bottles on board.

        • Would have to be a wide-neck for number 2's.

    • RyanAir FTW!

  • Does Adioso do premium searches as well?

And for those that use them to fly into London, Gatwick is their arrival point now, no longer Stansted.
    (effective 24th October 2011)

    • +1

Hey there - No premium on Adioso yet, though we're considering it.

  • wow those stop overs is KL are like 11 hours long to and 8 hours from…. are you able to go explore KL during that time or do you have to stay in the airport?

    • +2

You could explore, but it is about a 2hr return trip on the bus…could do a 20 minute trip to KLIA for something closer.
They now have "executive lounges" at KL LCCT that cost around $50 for something with a bit more comfort.
      http://www.plaza-network.com/images/pricelist/KL.jpg
Or the Tune Hotel across the carpark for ~ $30 to get a few hours shut eye…

      • +1

5 hours is more than enough to eat everything you can think of, go to the toilet, and continue eating some more.

        • +1

Yeah at the Airport theres a McDonalds make sure you try the spicy chicken sooooo yummy. Think theres Wendy's as well.

KL will take probably 1-1.30hrs return in a taxi depending on traffic conditions so wouldn't risk anything. Airport is in the sticks.

If you tried to explore wouldn't have time get stuck in their shopping centres. Took nearly 2 whole days to explore all the shops there.

    • +3

Theres an express train service from Airport to City… Takes exactly 28mins oneway… Very realiable…

Have used it number of times… Used to cost equivalent of $15 in ringgits

      • +1

Yes, same here, great train service, BUT that is from KLIA not LCCT, so you will need to also add the time and cost of getting the transfer coach from LCCT to KLIA.

      • +1

if you catch the train from LCCT (this is where AirAsia flies in and out of), you could have a wait at a connecting station - I tried this just once for the heck of it on one of my trips to KL…never again. I catch the bus for about $3 However, if youre flying out of LCIA..no problem

    • if money is no problem to you - you could always taxi in and back to the airport in that time..Id try and stay an extra day or 2 on a stop-over - head for Bukit Bintang and get some great food, cheap massage and lots of friendsly people/

Three is a hop on hop off bus (not from the airport tho).

      • +1 to stopping over for the day and hitting up BB for massage, shopping, food and people meeting! This is why KL is my stopover hub of choice!

Also, have crashed at Tune before for a few hours stopover. Recommend them too. Rooms are tiny, but thats the point, you're meant to go in, have a shower, nap on a good quality bed and get out. If you like to practice tae-bo and zumba in your room then obviously tune is not for you..

    • The Tune Hotel at LCCT (where AirAsia flies into) has a 3 hour package deal
      http://www.tunehotels.com/our-hotels/klia-lcct-airport

Regular price for 24 hours is about $20, so the 3 hour package will be cheaper

  • It is for those who cannot afford to pay extra to eat on the plane - so that they can get their breakfast, lunch & dinner for the next leg of the long flight.

    Best I found was:

    Gold Coast > Paris $388 21 Jan 2012
    Paris > Gold Coast $419 24 Feb 2012

Total Cost: $807 with plenty of money left over to get a 3-4 week Eurorail pass and backpack through Europe.

    • ah thanks for sharing this!!!! Eurorail pass sounds good. i will def look into this!

      • NP. Yes look into it ERP is the best way to travel around Europe IMHO. Easyjet can be good too (and sometimes cheaper and faster on the longer hauls) but trains are much more fun way to meet randoms :)

  • +1

Qantas was wanting to charge this much in 'taxes and charges' for a frequent flier booking.

    • Qantas is a rort, there is little doubt about that in my mind.

It's great to see a rep (like you Fenn) posting deals which hit adioso then onto OzBargain that may interest the wider community. Well done and keep up the good work!

    • +3

Thanks aldog! We're enthusiastic OzBargainers ourselves and have found lots of great deals on it, so we love to be able to give back when Adioso finds something cool.

    • Yeah follow this dude on twitter, he updates info frequently.

  • oh man great post!!! I am in the market for some cheap euro tickets. good job!

  • Fantastic new website! I'll be using this for sure!

  • does flight centre price matching policy work with this deal? would they match it?

    • No because to get for example the deal I mentioned above the legs have to be booked separately using a combination of airasia and easyjet. FC pricematch only applies to flights originating from Australia which means all those bookings would have to be on the one ticket ie not possible with multiple low cost carriers. Even if it was just airasia, often you need to book legs separately to get the best price eg. if you book MEL to KUL return, you will often find the total cheaper if you book the return sector separately.

What an amazing deal. Love you Adioso! This is an amazing feature. The number of times ive tried to find combinations of flights with jetstar manually… I WISH I HAD FRIENDS WHO WEREN'T POOR :(

  • adioso alerted me that kuala lumpur to melbourne is $219 in end of december, only to find out that it is cheaper, around $150 after airport tax… is that good or bad? anyway thumbs up adioso ;)

    • +6

Definitely bad, please send me the difference of $69 via paypal: [email protected]

Is it bad that I am thinking of resigning for a holiday.

    • go for it!
Ive done this a few ties in my life - especially when my employer wont give me the time off…I work to live, not live to work :)
Its always worked out for me - may not for you - these decisions are attitude-dependent…good luck

Nooooooo the MEL-KUL trip I bought two days ago has just dropped $50 :((((((((

    • +1

my KUL-LON return tickets have dropped by $300. lol

  • I got tickets for $390 return for MEL-KUL mid november. $243 from MEL and $143 return. In december there didn't seem to be any cheap MEL to KL flights but there was lots of return. Anyways happy with that for not booking 1 year in advance like most of their really cheap sales.

  • +1

Booked flights to London in May for late November and paid around 900 bucks - the same flights are now under $700! Annoying ><

  • Adioso shows the flights that originate overseas to me ex tax. Anyone else?

ie it shows London-KUL as $117 but thats an ex tax cost

    • +1

You're quite right, it looks like AirAsia have fiddled with their taxes a bit too in a way that's confused our system (we always try and show tax inclusive). I've fixed it and it's refreshing all the data now. As it turns out, the taxes between outbound and return legs got swapped, so the total return trip cost is still valid (ie: the deal at the aforementioned prices is still available).

      • This morning I got this email:

KUL to LGW under AUD435 - 95+ fares found:
Sat, 3rd December direct for $117 (show fares)
Sun, 4th December direct for $117 (show fares)
Sat, 10th December direct for $117 (show fares)
Fri, 23rd December direct for $117 (show fares)
Sat, 24th December direct for $117 (show fares)
Sun, 25th December direct for $117 (show fares)
Mon, 26th December direct for $117 (show fares)
Tue, 27th December direct for $117 (show fares)
Fri, 30th December direct for $117 (show fares)
Sat, 31st December direct for $117 (show fares)

And when i use adioso now it still shows $117… However on the Airasia website, after including tax, the fare is approx $200…

Could you please take a look at that? Thank you :)

        • +2

Thanks for the heads up - annoyingly, it looks like AirAsia are doing the irritating practice of "asymmetric pricing", ie: the tickets change price depending on where they're originating from.

Check this out, Dec 23, KUL->LGW bought from KUL: AUD$188

Now same flight, Dec 23, KUL->LGW bought as part of return: AUD$116

Adioso is correctly finding the cheapest available fare, but not telling you that it's only available as part of a return leg (sorry). We're working on techniques to detect this sort of behaviour, but at the moment it's just a bit confusing (at least when the airlines behave inconsistently themselves).

      • yeah, i get what you are saying. thanks for the effort!

yeah i bet it's hard to figure it out. no worries.

youre site is so freakin helpful with my travelling plans. great job!

        • Thanks heaps, glad you like it! We're working on a bunch of stuff to make it better at the moment, so keep an eye out. Good luck with your travels!

  • Why is there no option to select AUD currency for KUL to LON?
It has NZD but not AUD.

    • Adioso will do the currency conversion for you on it's end but AirAsia seems a bit odd/restrictive in terms of what currencies they're willing to display. Not sure why.

      • Only problem now is I want to book in Aug 2012 but cant search beyond March in Adioso even though in AirAsia I can.

  • How do I find the Melbourne to Paris fare? The only European option is London. Even of the offer's expired, shouldn't the route still be there?

  • Aren't Air Asia really bad for cancellations though?

Fenn - Really like you website.

  • Keep an eye out on your credit cards folks. Had a friend who picked up a cheap deal on adioso that was not available on the actual carrier website for the price (was about $400 more).

A few days after he had paid (and seen it go through on his CC transcript) the charges were reversed and he was then recharged for the higher price (ie +$400). There was no notification.

When he rang up for a please explain they said they would refund the excess but it would take a couple of months (I thought this is incredibly bad form considering he had never consented to be charged that much). As far as I know it came good after that, however.

    • Wow, which airline did that!? That is terrible! As far as I know, it is Australian consumer law that you must sell something for the advertised price and if you muck up the pricing that's your own fault.

Obviously, in the case given above they are (eventually) complying to the law by refunding the customer, but it's still pretty terrible. It wasn't an airline starting with the letter T was it?

    • Wow, that is odd! In all my years of online booking have never experienced that, but one thing didn't make sense?

cheap deal on adioso that was not available on the actual carrier website for the price
Adioso is not a booking engine, rather a deal aggregator. When you find a flight(s) that you like, it redirects you to the airline's website to do the actual booking and payment. Obviously sometimes the numbers on Adioso and the airline don't match, eg, if the seats in the cheaper fare sell out from when Adioso last did a poll on that fare.

BUT if your friend made the booking through the airline at the lower price, then that in and of itself means that it was available on the actual carrier's website for that price, as all Adioso does is feed in the dates and to/from cities into the airlines engine to take you directly to the quoting page - in exactly the same way if you went direct to that airline's website and typed in the date and cities combination.

Adioso doesn't take you to some special page with the airline that is not available to the general public - though who knows, one day with the amount of click through traffic Adioso generates for LCCs, they may be offered special incentivised rates :)

      • You are correct (sorry, I didn't comment on that). Adioso is just like google, except instead of finding web pages, we find prices.

Once you press "book" you just end up on the normal, public airline website.

I think what adante was saying is that the airline website said the cheap price, and (initially) charged the right amount, then reversed the cheap charges and recharged expensive ones! (madness).

I've never heard of that happening before (and I'm glad to hear they are fixing it up).

  • Anyway we can pay Air Asia Direct Debit or is the CC convenience fee essentially a fixed fee?

I just booked Sing Penang and couldnt see a way to pay other than CC.

FYI the fare was S$3 and with all the fees/taxes it was about S$80.

    • Unfortunately for most, you just have to pay the CC convenience fee.

AFAIK, when attempting to Direct Debit with Air Asia, you can only do so from a Bank Account in the country of departure for that particular flight. Eg If you book Sing > Penang, then you can DD only from Singaporean Bank Accounts (it shows you the list of allowable Financial Institutions when you go to pay). This rules out the DD option for most Aussies as you can't DD from an AU account, unless the flight originates from here eg MEL > KUL, OOL > LON etc.

      • Yeah, that's how I saw it. Thought I may have missed something but I guess not.

  • I paid $46/each way to upgrade my dad's seat so he got some extra legroom (as he has knee problems). I now got an email offering the upgrade to the flat beds (which would be great for him) for around $120. Any idea if Air Asia could refund the seat fee so I can upgrade him? I'll ring them tomorrow but thought to ask here anyway.

    • Do you think the flat bed upgrade e-mail offer was liked to having upgraded to the extra leg room seat? I'd be keen on getting the flat bed upgrade for $120 on the longer KUL - ORY flight.
I be doubtful you'd get a refund on the seat upgrade though.

    • Nevermind, got that e-mail too and hadn't selected the extra leg room. You pay a small fee + upgrade price through a 3rd party company to essentially go in the lottery to get a seat upgrade. You are advised up to 3 days or a min 4 hours before the flight if you got the upgrade. If you did, you get the upgrade, if not, you get the upgrade price refunded within 5 days after the flight. Best chance is not checking in until the latest possible.

Have gone into the lottery for the KUL -> MEL, MEL -> KUL, KUL - ORY, ORY -> KUL. Will see how it pans out.

      • how much where your flights for each leg (if you don't mind me asking?) and what dates (roughly) are you flying?
paid around 600 each for MEL to KL return (with baggage, meals etc). Seems so exp to last years 250 return all up pp. :(

        flying in jan btw.

        • Traveling March Weeks 1 to 3
MEL -> KUL ($334 Return Each)
KUL -> ORY ($490 Return Each)

Cursing a little as I since found $327 MEL -> LONDON one way for late FEB. Oh wells.

        • damn thats a good deal if only i could travel in march!..jan seems to be much more expensive this year round..but it seems like good cheap fares are still around. ORY was another 650 pp return..so booked jp instead for 300pp.

  • Thnx. Booked two tickets MEL - KUL return in march $574

  • Anybody know of cheap deals to Istanbul?
