490

Pretty good price. Been eyeing one of these for a while, but now with the rumoured Google Android TV device I'm undecided

Pity this version doesn't have the USB slot otherwise would have bought one.

    • Are you serious? So it can't play movies off a portable hard drive?

      • Yep, you have to buy the Pro if you want to plug in an external hard drive for movies etc.

        • Stuff that. My free telstra TV reads hard drives.

I guess that's why it has a micro SD slot instead, right? Seems like a big short-coming.

but now with the rumoured Google Android TV device I'm undecided

Yeah let see what next version of Chromecast they will have.

    • +9

Nvidia Shield has had the longest support of any Android devices, and that includes Google: about 5 years and still going strong!
      https://www.androidcentral.com/android-longest-support-life-…

I'd pick Nvidia Shield over any other Android TV product!

      • +6

Understand but we hope the new Chromecast less than $100.

Google don't exactly have a great track record of sticking with a product. They always seem to be interested in the initial month's sales then drop support for it soon after.

  • +1

I am thinking the same. Wait for Google Android TV dongle(prob around 100$) and use the savings to buy PS5 or one x

FYI, Sabrina no longer rumoured. Confirmed via latest Android 11 for Android TV developer preview.
Expect a lot of price drops for TV devices over the next few weeks, IMHO.

  • I have the first gen google chromecast and it can only cast from mobile devices? Are newer version different?

    • +3

The rumoured upcoming device is a standalone android tv device. So no need to use your phone, and it appears to have its own remote control.

  • +1

Sabrina seems to be comparable to Amazon Fire TV Stick, or Xiaomi, probably not compete with Shield TV directly in the market

    • As long as it has full access to the market place and you don't need to side load apps then I'm sold!

  • +1

plus delivery, or you can get it from their eBay for an extra $10 with free delivery.

    • +2

Yep - $16 delivery for me from their website so the eBay version is $6 cheaper.

    • Here's a tip guys - I suggest buying it from Computer Alliance's eBay store for $249 delivered. Then, jump onto the live chat and speak with an eBay rep to claim the price guarantee against Umart (which is currently selling it for $239).

      https://www.umart.com.au/Nvidia-Shield-TV-Streaming-Media-Pl…

They'll give you a $22 ebay voucher ($10 for the difference + 5% of the competitors price). In the end, net amount for the tube is only $227 delivered.

  • You can get an Xbox One S for this price which does just about everything.

    • +2

Higher power draw and takes up more space doesnt make it as attractive if your just intending to use the device for media consumption and not games.

    • +7

I'm actually using a Xbox One for Plex. I get stuttering video regularly (not bufferring, its something else), and occasionally some video files will just stop playing at a certain point. Have had to resort to Chromecast to finish watching. So Xbox One isnt perfect as a Plex player.

      • +2

Anyone suggesting an xbox must really have super basic needs. I could not imagine going back to using a console for media.

        • What makes your needs ‘not basic’ that a console can’t fulfil them?
Genuine question from a console user

          • +2

@thefluffyduff: For starters, IPTV is a million times easier & better on android tv than stuffing around with other means. Or "other" streaming apps. Granted these are perhaps niche but its an example of the diverse range of what you can do, and do reliably. Plus its tiny, and silent. You have the Android TV playstore at your finger tips, sideloading of apps, kodi/plex, codec support, everything else are just simply better on it. We have a lot thank consoles for in pushing the development of media boxes and capabilities since the xbox, but as media devices today consoles are not nearly as versatile as a good android tv box.

      • exactly same thing happened to me with my PS4 Pro. I thought it was the issue with my internet connection. But when I switch back to my ipad, it was all smooth.

      • Xbox One X didn't have any issues when I tried the app last.

      • Actually funnily enough it turns out the Xbox has some of the best codec support, just not with stock Plex! You need to install Kodi, then the Plex plugin and then it direct plays pretty much everything. The downside of the Plex plugin is that it's not the full interface, so it looks pretty basic, can't do live tv etc… But it fixes a lot of the transcoding/freezing issues

  • Came on here to say it's the same price with free shipping at PC Byte. Was looking at it earlier today but sold out now 😅

  • Is wifi streaming from a computer a good experience on this? That's the main reason I'm looking at this. I'm not super picky (I don't notice input lag on my tv) but I want a good experience for this kind of money.

  • I expect Google to price up the new chromecast (like Apple did when they got a polished product), at least $150/around $100 USD.

    • Thinking along the same lines, though $120 -$130. Hopefully I'm wrong and it's cheaper.

  • Newb question.

Can you play GOG and Epic Games on this streamed from your PC to your TV through an Nvidia Shield and if so how? I want to get into PC gaming but not be restricted to a small PC monitor or desk and don't want messy setups with HDMI cables running from a PC to my TV.

Even better yet I assume you can't use a gamelauncher on this thing and cut a PC out all together?

    • +1

GoG and Epic are DRM free and not required to start a game. So yeah you can cast your games on shield if you have an NVIDIA graphic card using NVIDIA GeForce Experience. Not sure how it works with AMD cards.

GeForce experience scans your PC for installed games so you don't really have to do anything apart from creating your Nvidia account and log in on both, your PC and Shield.

My personal experience is mixed tho. AC Odyssey worked just perfect while FF14 was quite laggy from time to time. The problem might be in the fact that I played Odyssey while all the devices were connected via a cable and when I played FF - all the devices were connected over WiFi.

You can not cut a Pc out as shield is just receiving and decoding a picture from your PC it has not enough power to actually do all the required calculations (unless you are playing some sort of mobile game of course)

      • Ok, if I was streaming a game from my PC, can I use the PC for something else, like internet browsing without interrupting the stream to the shield? I tried game streaming using steam about 10 years ago, and that sort of thing wasn't possible back then.

        • nope, you can't. Shield will receive a copy of the picture shown on your PC's monitor.

The only solution I can think of is using a virtual machine on your PC to run games, but that is obviously not the greatest idea.

          • @jellical: Wait really? What about dual screens? I assume you mirror screen1 which is playing a game, but screen2 could continue to do anything…

Edit: Or split screen - https://youtu.be/ZdozvtcDOUs?t=91

            • @TogTogTogTog: The issue there is mouse/keyboard/controller inputs. Unfortunately you can't assign different input devices to different "screens", the PC just assumes you are one person controlling it.

Given how powerful PC's are you would have thought there would be a couple of settings that allow you to do what you propose but without a VM setup, it's not going to happen.

            • @TogTogTogTog: Dual screen is actually a problem on itself) I had to turn off the second monitor to cast games on shield as sometimes it was casting the wrong screen or even just a black square. It's probably a solvable issue without turning anything off but I just didn't bother.

      • Thanks jellical that was exactly what I wanted to know thank you so very much for such a detailed response.

I actually did a screenshot for future reference 👍

And when this rumored google device comes out, another rumored device will be rumored. If you are happy with the price, just get it. No point waiting for rumored technology.

PC Byte had it for the same price with free delivery.

Can you remap the netflix button to plex?

    • +1

Sure can, Download the 'Button Mapper' App

  • Do you still get Geforce Now subscription with Shield?

    • I have the shield but never been able able to use geforce now.
When I first tried last year it wouldn't work as my connection was too slow, now it just says its not available in my region.

  • Just had my nvidia shield 2017 fail after 18 months =(. It simply won't turn on. Seems there's only 1 year manufacturer warranty even for the new shields. Definitely thought it would last much longer

Upcoming Apple TV with A12X will be worth waiting for. The A10X Apple TV is already faster than the fastest nvidia shield/google tv device, the A12X version will only widen that gap.

    • +1

      But…But - it's Apple!

Keep in mind the this google Sabrina android tv dongle won't have an ethernet port, also this from the photos it doesn't appear to have buttons on the remote for the volume

    • Agreed - would much rather have ethernet on a TV streamer :(.

Mind you I have USB ethernet plugged into my Chromecast in living room and that's working OK (some weird Y cable solution I found on the net but works).

If the new dongle has that kind of option I'm in.

  • I regret purchasing my Nvidia Shields, wouldn't wish them on anyone until Nvidia can sort their shit.

    • What issues are you having? There would be plenty of people here on ozbargain who would take them off your hands!

      • I'm fairly certain I'd get more money from selling my Shield Pro 2018 on Ebay than on OzB.

These things had some major faults when released, many of which still persist (e.g. multimedia remote). Nvidia has tried to address many of these but updates stopped about a year ago leaving some of the larger issues unresolved.

I'd recommend going to the Nvidia Shield forums for a good look at what the current issues tend to be.

        • Yep, they appear to go for good prices on eBay.

What Android TV box are you happy with? I'm fairly certain on not getting a shield, either getting the Vodafone box or the Google box when it's announced.

          • @Eatoff: Honestly, I still love the WD Live but I know it's time has past. The Shield was one of my last in a long line, got it mainly for the gaming side which turned out to feel like a scam.

If you're after media only, no games, then have you considered the Amazon Fire Stick?

Definitely steer away from Apple TV, with all the competition out there they won't be around long.
