1390

Last flights on the final 747 jumbo.

Qantas has announced a program of events to farewell its last remaining Boeing 747 and provide Australians the opportunity to say goodbye to the much loved “Queen of the Skies” ahead of its retirement from the national carrier’s fleet.

The airline will operate three one-hour “farewell jumbo joy flights” departing from Sydney, Canberra

The flights will go on sale at midday on Wednesday 8 July on Qantas.com and will operate on Monday 13 July (Sydney), Wednesday 15 July (Brisbane) and Friday 17 July (Canberra). Economy fares cost $400 and a small number of Business Class tickets will be available for $747 with additional extras included.

The flights will be operated on a cost-recovery basis and profits will be donated to the HARS Aviation Museum at Albion Park (Wollongong) and the Qantas Founders Museum in Longreach to support their efforts to preserve and promote the 747 legacy for future generations. Both museums have a Qantas 747 on public display.

The final 747-400 in the fleet will depart Sydney at approximately 2pm on 22 July 2020 as flight QF7474.

747s were awful in economy because they were loud. Up front in first class, in the nose, was very quiet though.

  • +4

Can they do a simulated hard bank landing like in the old Hong Kong airport days?

  • Thats not even a 747 in the photo! How hard would it be to find a pic of one? Anyone know what the resale value is on a 25-year-old 747? Would it still have any useful life left?

    • You'll have to pay someone to take it to salvage.

Some Indonesian airline will look to modernise its fleet.

    This deal is going nowhere

This deal is going around in circles

    Flying Covid747

  • The first and last time I flew in a Jumbo 747 was in 2007 with very serious turbulence after taking off. 3 hours later this crash happened at the same airport. Many back home thought I was dead :/

    • -1

Your link doesn't like like a 747 to me.

      • +1

Never said it was. Rather I was there in the morning before that crash and the weather was seriously bad.

        • The captain sounds like a remarkably gifted man. "Wind shear? What wind shear?"

  • -1

Unnecessary flights? Not exactly environmentally friendly.

  • +2

The Sydney flight would be a good one. Weather permitting would be V1 And up the harbour. Brisbane one would be on the new runway. The av-geek in me wants to go, but the Covid controls would spoil it.

joy flights in the middle of a pandemic. makes sense.

  • -4

Just booked for 4 of us from Brisbane, can’t wait.

    • +1

How did you manage that, when bookings don't open until Wednesday?

    • back to the future???… or just a bullshitter?

The flights will go on sale at midday on Wednesday 8 July on Qantas.com

no sense of humour i see

Very sad when they say "the last flight", as these are great aircraft and having flown on them quite a few times I really would miss them. Its great that MS Flight Simulator X Gold or Steam has them to fly which also is a buzz with a Sim setup.

Ah well the passing of a Titan!

    • +1

The new MS Flight Simulator 2020 will have 747-8 and looks freaking amazing

      • Yeah I heard, but have not used FS2020, have you beta tested it or is it available for Beta trial do you know?

        • +1

It's still in alpha testing, with beta testing to start soon I think

  • -4

So Qantas has conveniently forgotten about CO2 emissions and global warming in this useless exercise?

    • True. Probably the most fuel inefficient aircraft in the world right now. Even the worst Airlines got rid of these quite some while ago.

  • +1

An hour long flight. Take off, glide for 10 mins then get ready to descend.

  • +1

Anyone notice the photo here is a 787 - guessing the default image

  • -7

Sorry @Dealbot, not sure how this is a bargain - seems more like spam. Show us how to get discounted tickets and I’ll get a thumbs up.

Also, why would anyone want so cram in an aircraft for no practical reason during a pandemic. Don’t get me started on the waste of fuel…

  • Pretty sure these flights will go empty.

  • My first flight on a 747 the plane was probably less than 1/4 full. I had a whole row of seats to myself and slept very well.

  • +1

I guess Victorians are excluded fom this? Or are they selling this based on future easing of restrictions.

    • +1

      I don't see restrictions easing within a week! :(

  • +1

    Are meals included?

  • +3

Flight should have departed at 7:47am

  • +2

One hour flight. Does that include the taxi-ing?
Can people smoke for old times sake?
Do we have to make couples bookings for the toilet er, mile high club?

  • So do these flights actually go anywhere?

    • They couldn't call it a flight if it just stayed on the tarmac. If you are asking whether the departure airport is also the arrival airport (with no other airport involved), the answer is yes.

      • They probably should just leave it on the tarmac, pretend it's flying, and charge people $100 and give it all to charity

  • +2

To be clear, this is for the last qantas operated 747-400.

The current iteration of the 747, the 747-8; is still in production today. Qantas just hasn't ordered any.

We'll still have opportunities to fly on 747's for many many years to come; perhaps just not in qantas livery.

  • +2

Some people have too much money and time on their hands.

    • and no respect for or even awareness of the tonnes of fossil fuels that are burned for really very little benefit in this case

      • Diddums

  • I've never ridden a plane in my 76 years of existence.
I'm Mr. Play It Safe and is afraid of flying.

  • Definitely not a bargain according to news.com.au so I guess this should be moved to the forums then.

But it won’t come cheap – tickets are priced at $747 for business class and $400 for economy, in a nod to the Boeing 747-400 aircraft series.

  • Saw this plane flying by my place yesterday, suspect its the last time I'll see a Qantas 747 in the sky ever.
