730

Saw this, might be useful for someone?

As evidenced by the overwhelming crowds during past iPhone and iPad launches, it’s clear that our lives revolve around mobile. That’s why we’re happy to announce that we’re giving away 50 GB of free storage to anyone who uses a Box Personal account on an iOS device. That’s right, it’s 50 GB in the cloud completely free, forever. Your 50 GB of storage isn’t just limited to your mobile device – you get it anywhere you use your Box account, like on your laptop at home or your desktop at the office.

This promotion starts at midnight tonight and runs for only 50 days, so get your free space in the cloud by following these steps:

Visit the app store and download the Box app for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
Log in to your account or register for a new one directly from the app
Start sharing and collaborating in the cloud
(optional but recommended) Tell the world how you’ll use your 50 GB with the hashtag #Box50GB

I've never seen the point of these things. We pay heaps for mobile data in Australia, and many users are so paranoid that they even switch WiFi OFF during the day.

What possible use is there to upload all your crap to a server on the offchance that you might use it one day? You've already got it on the phone, or on your computer anyway. Both can be easily accessible at all times.

Not disagreeing with the deal, but just cannot see the point.

I use my dropbox to transfer ebooks/documents back and forth on my iPad. No need to sync with a computer.

I use a similar service to backup all my photos (via camera connector) while I am on holiday. The last thing you want is to have your camera lost/stolen/damaged and lose all of your photos. Free wifi at hotels should be enough to accomplish this.

I wouldn't send gb's of data via the mobile network but happily will over Wi-Fi.

        That's a great idea neil.

I was thinking along the same lines as llama until I read your post… very good idea for travel backups and on the go transfer.

I wasn't going to sign up.. but I will now, thanks.

        • If you have access to an FTP server, try out the MediaTransfer App. You can set it to automatically check for new photos on your iPad/iPhone and upload them to your FTP server.

        • I use my dropbox the same as Neil. It's great for when I want to get a photo from my iPhone to my computer, but can't be bothered getting the cable out and syncing.

Heaps of reasons really… for me it means that I can run my business from any computer any where in the world at any time. I use Dropbox in conjunction with Google apps. Also it makes file sharing a snap with other users.

Box.net is OK… I got my free 50gb with the HP Touchpad.

      • We get 50gb with the TouchPad? I wonder if I could get that, and 50gb for my iPhone, and combine them?

    • You may not see the point, but some people who want to keep a backup of important documents or photos would find 50GB of free online storage very handy.

You'd be wishing you had uploaded 50gb worth of crap on the server when your hard drive decides to sh*t itself :)

Back around 1999 when Nokia came out with it's first Internet WAP-enabled mobile phone, I told my friend and he arrogantly said "Why would you bother using the internet on your mobile?".

I'll never let him forget that.

      • tell you friend that he is a banana….

      • I already do remote access, etc all the time. My documents are already available online from anywhere in the world. But I share them from my own server, which I suppose other people might not have access to.

    • WIFI != GSM/3G

But I use my dropbox all the time, and even 2GB mobile data most users will never go near to using all that amount.

    • I also use dropbox.

      It helps me:

      1. Sync files between 3 machines on my home LAN.
      2. Remote back of same files.
      3. Mobile device access for any of my files, wherever there is 3G reception.
      4. Web access including the ability to easily share photo galleries with a nice interface - without needing to 'upload' anything first.

I have a 50GB account and its worth every cent of the $10 a month it costs.

The cost of data is a non issue. Once the files are synced, only changes are uploaded (via my DSL) so rarely more than a few GB per month. When using mobile devices, files are only downloaded as needed and images compressed to a reasonable size server side first.

liveconnected $15 per month has 1.5GB data and thats ample for browsing and downloading oodles of files via the dropbox app.

No longer do I need to worry about whether i copied the photos from my camera on the laptop, desktop, spare PC. When i copy them onto one, its immediately (copied via the LAN, not the internet) synced to all machines. Its simple, and just works - no config needed.

It also helps as an offsite backup. The unlimited restore feature means it retains all versions, incase something is deleted or corrupted (virus etc). Still need to do a complete 'offline' backup incase dropbox is every comprised.

I have access to every one of my files on my phone (for the odd occasion where i need files away from a PC) and this is often handing when showing photos etc. They just stream as neeeded to the device, thumbnails are auto-generated so my 5mb jpgs are streamed as 30k pics onto the phone for a slideshow.

Web galleries mean I can share photos with a few clicks, no need to 'create' a gallery (other than making a new folder in windows explorer) and no duplicating or uploading files.

if box.net is anything as good as dropbox, then 50GB free is a fantastic deal!

    • "You've already got it on the phone, or on your computer anyway. Both can be easily accessible at all times.

Not disagreeing with the deal, but just cannot see the point."

      Never had a house fire?

  • They are getting hammered. 503 error.

  • How are speeds compared to Dropbox?

    • +1

I found drop box faster than box.net. With box.net if you want to put it on your PC you need to add it as a shared network folder. Otherwise you have to use it via web browser which is slow and annoying.

I'd recommend box.net as a place to upload and forget data that you don't need to access all the time and use Dropbox as your day to day.

I have not used box.net via IOS and have no clue how it is set up from that perspective.

      • How do you add the shared network folder in Windows?
Browser-only access sucks. The Box Sync app is only for business accounts.

  • It's very snappy on the browser end, and very user intuitive. However I prefer DropBox interface because it integrates itself natively to the OS and sychronises. But free 50GB, can't complain right?

The Windows desktop app isn't for free account users. Dealbreaker. Account deleted.

    • I can't even find the link to the desktop client on their website??

    • Definitely a dealbreaker…

    • it does say iOS in the deal… What did you expect?

      • That's why I didn't neg the deal, Dom. I just said that it was a dealbreaker for me, because I'm a PC and Dropbox gives out cross-platform apps like candy.

        • so whats the deal with dropbox. do they include icloud data aswell ? pls explain

        • Dropbox is 2GB free (all platforms and services) and then you can pay extra for a 50GB or 100GB package.

    • Oh thx, only reason I'd get it was to use it on all devices. Only free via iOS, but open to other platforms at a cost.

      I'll stick with dropbox.

  • dropbox style web storage are less effective on ios. there really isnt that much the ios can do with the file as you can on Android

    • Have you used the Goodreader app? It allows you to choose what app to open each file in.

    • There are plenty of apps for IOS that let you edit/view/print Word/Excel/PDF/plain text documents; most of them will save to Dropbox (and sometimes Box.net).

  • Yeah what happened to wap? Did they stop it on older devices? Anyone still using it? Still remembert using that on my old 6230, suxed coz since u coukdnt really use hotmail etc, but there where email based sites very basic.

  • Pfff. They can't even keep their website up for registrations.

    • yep… still down.

      not a great look :(.

    • Reliable storage. Fast access from anywhere in the world. LOL.

    • I have been using it fine all day - No latency at all.
It mist just be the signup page.

    • took me 5 seconds to register just then on my iphone 4?

      ???

and uploaded a 2meg pic to test and that went very fast as well ????

    • Their blog is down at the moment, but it looks like the blog is hosted separately to their main site. The main site is very responsive for me.

50GB! That's a pretty good offer. I'm more of a Dropbox user but with that much space may as well give it a go :)

Dropbox user, But hey, it's free. I registered 5 accounts :D

  • Website not working?

    • it's working atm

  • but 100mb file size limit sucks..

  • good deal considering it's free but who is going to be able to fill it considering the file upload size limitation. So if its pics, documents and music ok, but not for vids.

  • well it's a cloud not a host like RS, MU or Mediafire so 100mb is good enough. Even with paid account max size is only 2Gb

    • Fileserve is 5GB

  • Great deal, signed up.

Planning to use it to store books/whitepapers, utilities and snippets of code I use regularly for work. Just recently got an ipad so will be great to have all those files accessible from anywhere, whether on ipad, iphone or over web interface at work.

  • I've signed up for a couple of accounts since this posting, and they are both still 5GB. What gives?
