  • is approx 2.5-3m viewing distance to close for a wall mounted 51"?

Any more special for ozbargainers? Free delivery??

    • Delivery is $70 - ouch. Not that $870 is a bad price but free shipping really would sweeten the deal.

    • You should be able to tell a difference between 720p and 1080p at that distance.
      http://hd.engadget.com/2006/12/09/1080p-charted-viewing-dist…

It's definitely not too close (in terms of picture quality). Viewing angle wise is fine as well in my case.

    • I would say so. a 40-46 inch would be better for that sort of distance.

    • According to Better Homes & Gardens on friday night, the optimal viewing distance is 1.5x the size of the screen. So a 51" screen, should have a 2m viewing distance.
I think that sounds a bit close, so if you've got 2.5-3m, that would be perfect.

  • Free deliver and ill take it with the extra warranty today!

"This TV is designed for Australian Digital Broadcasting Network only" - so it wont work if I decide to move overseas later on? (eg. like Hong Kong)?

    • +2

I believe HK uses NTSC btw why would you take over 30kg stuff to HK?
Just buy a new one there

      • +1

        HK use PAL not NTSC

    • +1

Australia has a different DIGITAL signal - so tuner won't work in HK, UK, etc. But why would you pay all the $$$ to lug it to HK, when that would probably cost as much as a new one there?? Just sell it here before you go & enjoy all the features of a new one, and none of the hassles of broken screen, etc!!

WOW, I thought those guys went out of business in the 90s! How much are Brashes selling it for?

    • +1

It appears though that that one does not include 3d glasses where as this one does

  • Any idea if this one records tv to usb?

    • i don't think so.only cheapie and rebadged Chinese tvs like dse, vivo, soniq, teac, gva, sanyo, awa, akai and now hitachi have PVR.

    • No it doesn't record to usb, i have this tv (or at least my housemate does).

  • sooo tempted~! so cheap !
but why EPG (Electronic Program Guide): No ?

    • I got this tv from dick smith at $799 a couple of weeks ago, just picked it up from the shop so no shipping. It has an EPG but it is really slow, I haven't updated the firmware on it yet but maybe that will help. Its a good tv in my short experience with it.

      • You must have the 720p model. The 1080p model at Dick Smith is $1000.

        • for over 40" its not good to buy just HD. i hope you get 1080p, coldandwet!
but, can you share your experience watching normal 2D programme in 3D (converted to 3D by the tv). are they good ? feel dizzy ?
and this is firmware upgradeable ? wow.. samsung is good

        • +1

No I didn't get the 720p model I will scan the receipt when I get home, it is this model it just took a bit of haggling. I don't know if the fireware is upgradeable I haven't tried, 2D to 3D is a waste of time but gears of war 3 is pretty fun in 3d. Where is the cheapest place to buy more glasses?

        • @erwinsie
Not entirely true… it depends just how big the screen size is and how far away you sit from the screen. You need to review a Lechner distance chart to figure out your optimal screen size and optimal HD vs FullHD resolution for your viewing room.
The following are the minimum screen sizes that will let your eyes resolve all the detail at the Lechner distance of 3m:
          720p = 116cm (46”) screen.
          1080i/1080p = 175cm (69”) screen.
Note: Using a smaller screen for each resolution will prevent you from seeing all the detail in source output.

If you really want to optimise your viewing and are buying a FullHD screen - the basic rule is get the biggest you can afford.

You can find a Lechner distance chart here:

  • oo.com.au price is now 1299.95….
    what happened to the $799.95??

1299.95 + shipping isnt a deal, as dse has local stock at $1,096 right now..

    • It's still showing $799.95 for me.

      • yep. noticed now its back to 799.95 also. thanks.

TV Prices are only going one way, down… down.. down..

P.S Buying a tv that is not full HD is a waste

    • +2

      Depends on your requirements…
a while back I bought a $634 50" HD LG for my elderly Father.
(Full HD was 50% or more higher at the time.)
He just uses it as a TV, and sits a fair way from it. He was used to an old 68cm CRT!
Like a lot of people, his eye sight would not tell the difference between Full HD & HD, and does not use any other devices as input. The only channel he watches that broadcasts in Full HD is GEM (mainly old programs not shot in Full HD!). Many channels broadcast in less than HD. So why pay so much more if you don't use it??

Buying a Full HD TV in that case would be a waste of money!
It is a personal preference, based on the use of the TV.
But I want Full HD. Just waiting on the prices to fall a bit more.

  • I have one of these tv's, its got a great picture. 2d 3d conversion is ok, but i wouldnt bother, its not that spectacular. Has a Lan port, but only for media sharing, no internet, picked up my tversity automatically the moment i connected to my network which was nice. Has a buzz coming from the back, which I notice when watching at low volume levels, it blows, but apparantly thats just what ya get with these large plasmas. Pic quality is definately good though. No firmware update has sped up the EPG, still slow. At that price ya cant go wrong though for a nice quality tv.

  • sold out.

    • +1

just wait for receipt from coldandwet then you can go to JBHF

  • -1

    damn it sold out..

I saw this one at bing lees today and it was $1295 or something.

Looks like a big bargain, I would rather get this than the 42" LG LED FULLHD Smart TV I was planning to get for $690.

    • I will wait until it gets below $799 again. 2ndsworld should be able to drop it down more.

  • This TV was $1500, less than 6 mths ago.

My housemate got a bargain of $1100, about 3-4mths ago, $800 is crazy price.
