    Doesn’t have a USB port.

    • +5

Sorry, no where for you to insert your dongle

    • No, but it has a indentation in the plastic at one end that looks like it's designed for a USB-C port. Maybe they were going to put one in then thought, nah, that would be too useful and get around all the limitations of this model. We still want to force most people to buy the Pro.

What advantages does this Nvidia Shield have over a train? Which I can also afford.

    • +1

This also doubles as a high-speed train so you don't have to stuff around with customs at the airport.

    • +12

The advantage with this Nvidia Shield is you can pay with Afterpay. The option is not available when purchasing a train

      Hi,

I'm not sure if you're joking or serious, but if you are in the market to purchase a locomotive may I suggest http://www.sterlingrail.com/classifieds/Listings.php?type=Lo…

I have found sterling rail to be a good platform for purchasing trains. FYI sometimes it makes more sense to lease rather than buy a locomotive, depending on your purposes.

All the best in your (potential) locomotive adventures!

      Cheers,
      Phoenix

Nice. But does it accept Afterpay?

      • +3

No free shipping so will have to give those a miss. Shame as had my eye on a nice SD60 for holiday trips.

        • +1

Free delivery by train. Not ship

      • Thanks mate. Will check these out for my next train purchase.

surely I'm not the only one who doesn't get how this became a train conversation?

      • It's because sallen75 asked:
"What advantages does this Nvidia Shield have over a train".
        :-)

        • Yeah but why a train rather than say a Ferrari

          • +1

@fredblogs: yeah, i can follow the thread to see who started it, but why train or ferrari or any other locomotive?
Is there something (a pun, a reference) I'm missing?

            • +3

@telljoolz: So many unanswered questions, hope you don’t go loco.

              • +2

@Quarn: If this thread gets anymore derailed he might.

          • @fredblogs: A train pulls more passengers, a Ferrari only pulls the few who wish to play with dongles.

    • Nvidia Shield runs Android. I'm pretty sure a train doesn't. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Same code can be used for the Pro version for 369.00

    • +2

      It’s $365 delivered at Centrecom.

      • Yes I know :) Just thought with after pay it's easy fortnightly repayments with no interest. (Unless you miss a payment, but they send a reminder email before hand)

  • I bought a USB splitter for my amazon firestick, would likely work with this too

    • +2

I’m pretty sure it won’t make a difference

    • +4

It's very hard to split 0 USB ports into more, it's not even powered by USB.

    • I actually had to by a splitter to make my Shield 2018 work, had issues with HDCP

  • how does it compare to the vodafone box?

    • +4

The Shield has much better hardware, better upscaling features, HDR and Dolby Atmos options, better gaming options and is pretty much the best Android player you can buy. It does not have a TV Tuner.

The Vodafone TV is a nice box for the average user, with a TV tuner. The shield runs rings around it speed-wise though. The Shield is also better supported with updates.

      • When does the speed matter though? Only for 4k or does it even affect menus?

        • I actually haven't used the Shield but been told flicking through the menus is noticeably faster than the standard cheaper boxes. The speed can also help with any transcoding (Plex server) and games, if that is your thing.

Not quite the same thing, but I have a standard Chromecast and an Ultra. The Ultra is just so much more responsive and a pleasure to use.

    • +3

Get a train instead of a vodaphone box.

      • Are there any plans for an Android 10 update with the train?

        • Engine 5 is out next month.

  • I'm hoping at some point they add Airplay to the shield and then I can get rid of my Apple TV.

    • +2

there're few apps you can install to get airplay functionality, however when screen casting from my mac the resolution is capped at 1080p though (2019 nvidia shield pro)

  • Available for 235 at centrecom without afterpay.

The shield pro is also available there for 365 which may be the better deal.
