Seagate Ironwolf NAS 8TB $339 + Delivery (Free >$1K Spend or Pickup VIC) @ DeviceDeal

110

First post so please be kind.

Update - they have jacked it up to $349 and are now calling it a "sale" boo.

(FREE SHIPPING ONLY FOR ORDERS OVER $1K)

Certainly not the cheapest ever but pretty competitive considering the current deals. Beats the $345ish from Amazon US if ordering 3 or more (which has terrible shipping waits - I had to cancel my order as it didn't move for 4 days). I picked up 3 just now.

"first post so please be kind."

I'd really love to know, when (and where) did this ridiculous phrase originate? Does anyone know?

I believe there was a deal posted back in 2012 by a first timer and it was an ok deal but not the best deal it had ever been. And boy did that guy cop it. The keyboard warriors were out for blood. I believe he quit ozbargin the very next day and refused to ever buy anything that had been discounted ever again. Terrible story and I pray every time I hit the refresh button to check the latest deals, I never witness anything like that again.

      • Thanks Laudern. I believe you and I'll sleep easy at night now. Lol

    • The saying could have also come from a first time casting couch episode.

  • I'm glad I bought the WD Elements 10TB for $253+20 which contains a WD White drive. This Ironwolf is expensive!

    • I bought a 16TB Exos from Newegg two weeks ago for $659. Less than double the price of this, for double the capacity of a better drive.

      • People complain they are noisy though.

        • haven't heard noise, but in fairness, the server is in another room from my HT setup, so I can't hear it.

    • I bought two of those 10T WD as well from Amazon UK in the last deal … but still waiting for dispatch

    • The theory is that these drives (including the WD equivalent) are purpose built for NAS. Operating in NAS enclosures and 24x7. How much of that is marketing vs truth, I'm not certain.

      • Yeah, they might be the same physical drive, with slightly different firmware and boards so that they operate at a different RPM and have a different spin down time.

I stick to WD Red as they fit my use pattern as my PC is on 24/7. My current HDD stats:

Intel 330 180GB: 36266 hours on, 269 power on count
Toshiba X300: 17707 hours on, 68 power on count
WD Red 8TB: 21518 hours on, 79 power on count
WD Red 5TB: 35620 hours on, 254 power on count
WD Green 5TB: 32175 hours on, 196 power on count

The Toshiba X300 is loud, not any faster than the Reds or Greens as my data is more sequential in nature (I get 100-120 MB/s reads and writes even on the Green).

  • Bought 2 of these last year, both had 2-3 bytes of reallocated sectors. Got the first one replaced under warranty last month, and it's already generated 3 bytes of reallocated sectors.

I've used seagate for 20 years, and these are the first drives I've had with issues, so YMMV on these.

    • I stopped using Seagate when my SV35.5 1TB surveillance drives started failing after 2 years. The heads actually crashed into the platters, scraping a wide ugly ring and making the drive non-recoverable through normal means. The data was not valuable enough to have the platters removed and read individually.

I've had 2 of this exact model replaced under warranty in the last few months (both with reallocated sectors, like yours), and the refurbished unit they sent me for my 2nd RMA which arrived a week ago also has seek issues :-(.

I've received another RMA authorisation and will be posting it away tomorrow. I expect it will be another 4 week turnaround to get my replacement drive again, so that will make it > 2 months without a drive. I've probably just been unlucky, but this drive model has really hurt my confidence in Seagate.

    Are DeviceDeal reliable?

I know to take online reviews with a pinch of salt but productreview.com.au doesn't sound promising with most of the reviews around false claims of having stock.

And Op, how did you get free shipping? I tried various postcodes in NSW and it was $12.90 for "Nationwide Standard Shipping - $ 12.90 AUD, Delivery time 3 - 7 Working days (after payment approval)". I note at the top left it says free shipping for orders over $1k?

Ok I see that now. Because I had always wanted to order 3 (order value over $1k), I had never realized this stipulation. My bad. What's the correct ozbargain protocol in this case? Shall I update or take the post down?

Just edit the original post title to say + Delivery/Free C&C (VIC), and then mention "Free shipping for orders over $1,000" in the post body.

        • Done - thank you

@ozzypozzy: Thanks for updating! All good and thanks for sharing.

Just realised one of the mods tidied up the title to be clearer (sorry mine wasn't perfect). All good.

    • About the reliability, I am a first time customer so let's see how I go. I'll call them on Monday to confirm stock and update the thread.

    • +1

Called and confirmed with the seller this morning that the units are in stock and my 3 drives will ship today.

  • Shipping $12.90 for me.

    • Just realized that I never saw this as my order was always going to be 3 drives and qualified for free shipping. Apologies. Post has been updated.

  • Still waiting on a deal for the 10TB since I need to pick up another 2 at some point.
