Hi OzBargainers,

Following sylon's advice on his 3800X Bargain, found the same process works on this 10TB WD External Drive.
For 'Shuckers' this will usually contain a WD100EMAZ-00WJTA0 'White' Drive, with apparently a small chance of being a WD Red drive.

To get the right price, open the link above, then in the "Frequently bought together" Section at the bottom, deselect the other offerings, then "Add To Cart". Came through as $250.79 for me.

Not the cheapest it's ever been, but fairly close, and next cheapest offerings seem to be ~$300+. Maybe you could get Officeworks to pricebeat?

Enjoy!

Is shipping also $27 for you?

    • Yes, sorry, Shipping seems to be adding on top which isn't showing until proceeding to checkout, I'm seeing $22.34 to Perth, WA.
I'd update price, but someone seems to have beat me to it.
      Either way it's 250.79 + Delivery (~$20-25)
      Thanks for clearing that up.

  • +6

I have prime (au), but am not getting free delivery on this on any delivery option,

    Item: $250.79

    $22.34 for Expedited International Delivery

    $56.25 for Priority International Delivery

    $19.34 for Standard International Delivery

Still a decent deal at around $27/tb.

    • Yep seemed to be the case with the CPU as well, I'm sure you can complain to amazon and get a credit/refund if you're concerned later as it is from Amazon UK.

      • +2

I chatted with the customer service earlier this morning and were told free international shipping only applied to amazon us, they said they don’t have amazon uk item for sale

        • Well I guess I was wrong, maybe they'll let you off for the first time :P. My bad.

  • What a weird item, it doesen't show up on the UK site or under buying options, like you said, you have to get it by the 'bought together' panel

Interestinly, cheapest delivery is: $19.34 even with prime

    • you have to get it by the 'bought together' panel

That's the bug. Works on other items too but you're right, no free Prime delivery on this one.

      • This is such a good 'bug'. Found some good deals on other items I wanted to buy with this method.

  • -1

I just tried, I have Amazon Prime and I managed to get FREE delivery.

    • +1

      How?

      • +2

I apologize, it showed up as free. I refreshed and shipping was $22.34 to Perth

        • -6

apology accepted, you need to take more vitamin B for your eyes

  • Will be great if this is red drive

    • Having bought a lot of them they're all white label the last few years, no real difference in a NAS but may need to use a molex > sata adapter or similar hack if using directly in most PCs.

      • +2

Never use a molex to SATA adaptor, just tape the pin.

        • Absolutely nothing wrong with the crimped ones.

        • Yep, molex to sata, lose your data.

  • +2

Ah, so this is why I got the CCC notification but couldn't find it when I looked!

  • +3

hmm do i need another 10tb on top of my 33tb

    • +6

Weird flex. The answer is yes.

    • +3

Ask your wife and that'll be your answer

      • +8

Tell her it's for more porn

      • You assumed @s1Lence is married and/or is male? XD

  • You can change shipping to Standard International Delivery (10-12 business days), saves $3

These will have UK plugs, so you probably have to shuck them.

    • It is a hardwired plug or just a plug-in figure 8 cord?

    • +1

It's an AESN part, so should be three same as the Australian stock.

These have a wall adaptor that have changeable plugs to suit various countries.

    • No. As an 'AESN' model it should arrive with an international ac plug adapter set (for UK, EU, AU, US etc). Just fit the AU adapter ;)
Only the US model (NESN) ships with the US (North America) ac cable and/or plug.

      • No aussie plug in the box

  • Very tempted! I am continuously looking at HDD prices. For 2 bay NAS I think I should hold back and wait for 12/14TB deal.

    • …or a 16, or a 18/20/+ expected over the next 12months…

  • Very good Deal!

  • +1

can these be used for academic purpose?

    • They can be used for any kind of data storage?

    • +6

Yup, definitely can store any sex education movies for better career progression

  • Any cashback on this?

    • yep, bought at 11ish and received Cashrewards confirmation just now

  • the white drive means not SMR, right?

    • +3

WD don't make SMR drives larger than 6TB, so yes this is not a SMR drive.

      • -1

Actually not true, you can get 8tb and 10tb external disks with smr.

        • Not from Western Digital.

          • -1

@thatguyfromthatplace: WD have lied before. Big time. It's not unreasonable to suspect they may lie/or are lying again.

            • +2

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Your suspicion is not evidence. Please provide a link to someone claiming to have found an 8tb or greater WD drive that's SMR.

              • +1

@thatguyfromthatplace: I never said it was fact. I said it's not unreasonable to suspect they may lie or are lying again.

Suspicious ZFS users suspected WD 2tb, 3tb, 4tb and 6tb drives, specifically aimed for NAS use and marketed as such, were using SMR tech. Surprise surprise WD did indeed hide this fact, subsequently had to change their entire product lineup, and are now subject to a class action lawsuit in the US.

                • +1

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Continued suspicion in the absence of any evidence to the contrary is unreasonable. But hey, it's your tinfoil hat. Wear it as you will.

                  • @thatguyfromthatplace: So previous actions and events have no bearing on future action and events in your opinion?

Good luck convincing anyone of that. Would love to see you try and convince police of that :D

                • +2

@Typical16-bitEnjoyer: Strictly speaking by definition WD didn't lie (until proven otherwise in the class action) but rather omitted the drive tech. Other companies did the same. By this line of logic, we should be suspicious of all HDD manufacturers as they've all done it. It's just WD have been the brazen ones to try and slip SMR tech into NAS/RAID drives and the others haven't (yet).

What the class action lawsuit is trying to do is prove WD deceived customers and said that all of their Red drives were suitable for NAS/RAID usage and thus lying. The problem and what the class action lawsuit is going after is to get WD to cease promoting or providing SMR drives for NAS purposes. They viewed it as WD providing a product not suitable for NAS/RAID use when it was promoted for such under the Red line.
There hasn't been an entire product line up change but rather a clarification of what drives are what and to differentiate and guarantee a certain product the Red Pro line was emphasised to be CMR only.

Also, it would be stupid and suicidal for WD to be lying about any of their drives in the near future. We're fairly safe to rely on what WD are publishing at the moment in regards to their line up. Whilst the white label drives are omitted from the publications on their lineup, they're a derivative of one of their consumer production lines anyway.

                  • @Trance N Dance: That's like a car manufacturer saying your vehicle is good with E10 , but it turns out it isn't, and ends up not performing as marketed.
For enthusiasts and businesses, that would be considered lying(even if it isn't considered lying in the eyes of the law) and I'd steer clear away from them (if I could afford to), and wait for someone else to confirm.

  • Great find, thanks.

  • +1

Does Cash Rewards 5% back apply on these?

    • +1

yep, bought at 11ish and received Cashrewards confirmation just now

  • Awesome find!

    Bought, thanks.

  • +2

This is still working not sure why it says out of stock in title?

  • There is a 14tb elements going for $415 not sure if this is a good deal also

  • Thanks OP. Got one.

  • +14

Just a heads up - these won't contain a WD100EMAZ, but instead a WD101EMAZ. I bought 3 of them recently and shucked them. The WD101EMAZ is an air filled CMR drive. Louder and hotter than the helium filled WD100EMAZ. Here's someone else with the same experience:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/gqcpjb/shucked…

    • wow the pic looks like it is burning ember hot

      https://preview.redd.it/dhfzep3kj5251.png?width=789&format=p…

Now we need to know if they are going to be put air filled high TB drives in all their externals…like 8TB, 12TB, 14TB etc

    • how much did you bought them and from where?

    • +1

      ok then pass… thanks

    • Yikes. I just ordered two before seeing this. Has anyone had this or other things from Amazon UK via AU ship?

If it ships, I'll find out what drives are inside when I receive them, I guess.

    • What a bugger - if they've changed to CMR drives looks like I'll have to hope the bigger 12TB or 14TB are still helium filled and non-CMR. Thanks for the heads up!

      • +2

CMR are the drives you want. SMR are the less-than-ideal ones.

        • Ah true, I got my acronyms mixed up. Cheers

        • +1

PMR also is the same thing as CMR

    • I'm out.

    • what is the difference temp you got from the helium and the air filled drives?

would you buy these air filled drives again?

      • +1

I have one of each type in my NAS.

The helium drive is 31 degrees.

The air filled drive is 36 degrees.

That's what it shows in the NAS software anyway.

    • +3

FWIW, I just received mine and it did come with a WD100EMAZ, which I'm thrilled with. YMMV.

      • Confirming!
My 2 HDDs arrived yesterday and both are WD100EMAZ

  • Are these out of stock? still seem to be able to add to cart.

  • +1

Well there was no way I could ignore that price

  • +1

What do you fill these with?

  • Ordered two … Thx OP … and now just need to wait for a good deal on 918+

  • Ordered one, hope the 5% cashback + $5 Bonus Cashback track on this deal.

  • Just tried to order one and got:

Some items are no longer available
We're sorry. Some items became unavailable after you added them to your Shopping Cart. You can return to the product information page to try another seller.

    Anyone else seen this ?

  • I was hoping to buy this to shuck the drive to then put it into a single bay Synology.. dammit!

  • +1

OOS, well played to those who took the plunge.

  • Shipped already! Nice!

  • Thanks to the OP for the great deal. Just got a Synology 918+ and no drives yet. Looking forward to building it out with these to test and play around.

Im new to the shuck thing. Is there any advice or links to ideal processes to remove them safely?

    Thanks in advance.

    • +1

Youtube is your friend. Plenty of shucking videos around and most of them look straightforward

  • Missed out! Just on the days I don't check OzB. Goodness me.

  • Thanks. I ordered and it's shipped. Will sit as a spare until i fill my current 28tb

    • When did you order yours? I ordered on 8th and still hasn't shipped.

      • Maybe they had a rush.. I got in on tue 8th just before 7am. Shipped same day and had it in Brisbane in 5 days (impressive as we can't get a parcel from Sydney in this time)

        • Thanks. Was finally shipped on 21/7 and ETA 31/7.

  • +1

mine arrived today. inside was a wd100emaz

  • Same got mine today and its a wd100emaz. Great deal, fast shipping, and cashrewards on top. :)

    • That's pretty quick for everyone that got theirs already! Did you all choose priority/expedited, or just the standard shipping?

      • Well, I guess it was standard delivery cause I just got mine delivered too… 5 days, thats a sight quicker than even local brick and mortar

  • Got mine, No Australian plug in the box. Crap

    • I've heard WD will supply you with a new one, if you ring them, worth a try.

    • Initiate the chat with them and tell them that you bought this from Amazon and they have sent you the US plug. They will send you an AU plug after they verify the SN of the drive you bought.

  • Anyone else have your order status as on not shipped? Ordered mine on the 8th..

    • I'm in your boat, that's exactly what my order is showing: not shipped yet. $ has not come out of account either.

      • Bought on 8/7 and finally shipped on 21/7.

    • Just received mine today. Shipped on 29 Jul. No AU plug. Chatted with Amazon and they asked me to buy one and then that they will refund the cost.
