[VIC] Free Meals for Those in Need @ Om Vegetarian, St Albans

1970

Saw this on their facebook page.
Dear Melbourne,

As we enter the second lockdown, we understand many more people will be impacted.

We have heard stories of international students who have lost their jobs and are sleeping in their cars as they don't have money for rent. Many others have also been left without government assistance during this difficult time for our community.

As a result, we will be opening our kitchen at 8 Charles Street St. Albans VIC 3021 to prepare free vegetarian meals for those in need.

The meal will consist of rice, lentils and a vegetarian curry and be served in a reusable takeaway container.

At this stage we don't have any delivery options but hope to connect and work with community organisations in the near future.

The meals will be prepared to order and accordingly, we require that the order is made at least 2 hours before the pick-up time scheduled for the day.

The first pick up details are as below:
Date: Sunday 12th July 2020
Time: 1pm-2pm (please place order on facebook messenger by 11am)
Location: 8 Charles St St. Albans VIC 3021

We aim to make this a contactless pickup so we request that anyone coming for their meals please private message us on facebook as they arrive also and we will provide the meal to them in front of our premises.

It is a request that those who avail this service please do so in good faith and only if in true need.

What is it with all of these Indian restaurants giving people struggling free meals?

How many offers have been posted here?

Whatever is in your water - I wish more people drank it.

God bless you and thank you for being awesome Aussies.

It's our culture! We help wherever we can!
The world runs on generosity, if everyone is greedy, everyone will perish!

Its a great thing to do.

Indian's understand the value of community and family and people. Sure there are idiots…like any culture…but overall they are incredibly giving and generous and appreciate and value what many of us in Australia take for granted.

Agree….more of this…just genrally more caring!

    Indeed …

Indian restaurants leading the way in kindness again.

I hope you are rewarded handsomely for your generosity.

Great gesture for those in need.

God bless all these Indian restaurants' owners (and of other cuisine joints, if any) for their kind work. I hope people visit them more often when things are back to normal. I am sure those who got this help will remember them for life.

Great to see community getting together, regardless of background and faith. You are doing amazing work for the community and this is what Australia is all about. We are all Mates and we need to stand should to shoulder (1.5m distance) to come out on the other side.

Kudos to you and your business

Will definitely come and eat at your place when restrictions get lifted.

When I was in Goa I was speaking to the taxi driver about hinduism, and he said he wasn't really religious, but he did believe in the kindness of others.

Times/actions like these make me think he wasn't far off.

Works out perfectly - I'm in need of a free meal.

Haha, you guys never fail to amuse. A quick check would reveal that I live in Queensland.

  • A friend of mine told me once, no matter what western movies shows ( poverty/slum etc etc) but everyone there manages to get enough food for themselves.. (without eating bats and frogs)…

No matter what western movies show but western countries manage to get enough food for themselves then + some more to get heart disease or diabetes. Just don't believe what is in the movies.

You don't have to eat bats and frogs to get some crazy contagious disease. People in Africa ate wild meat and got Ebola. Could happen to anyone. Somehow it has to do with meat but there is other bacteria in veggies that can be quite harmful.

Sometimes we get an outbreak of flesh eating disease and those people didn't even eat anything.

India is a global agricultural and dairy powerhouse. There's enough produce (actually surplus) even for such a huge population. I think this plays a big role in forming the cultural eating habits. Incidentally, most of these deadly viruses originated from meat related infections and hence not from India as India isn't the major meat-eating country, particularly those that you listed.

  • Love this. Good karma coming Om Vegetarian's way.

  • I love OM Vegetarian. My fav meal on the run when melb was open. Cheap meals even when you pay full price. All you can eat. Yummy too.
