  • Is it a good phone? I have Oppo R9s for more than 3 years now and still using Android 6 and Oppo doesn't look like to update it to 7 anytimw soon. Could possibly same case with this phone for 3 years time?

    • +7

I don't think ozbargainers would have to think by spending under $250 phone and can last them for 3 years.

Having said that, this phone is a catch… google it… it just shut up and takes my money kind of phone.

      • +4

Ha, this one https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/188848 still alive and kicking.

        • An Ozbargain classic, still perhaps one of the cheapest Qualcomm chipset phones around (SD 210 doesn't count).

      • +3

I have used my oppo a57 for 4 years haha no complains, still going strong

        • Do you have Android 7? Mine one oppp r9s cannot even install new 7eleven app due to old version of android

          • +3

            @yht: Unfortunately still on android 6 :(

omg I just realized I cant update the 7eleven app

            time for an upgrade!

            • +1

@lMalfunctionl: And this is exactly why I'm upgrading to a Reno Z once it comes down to $330 - 350 :3

              • +1

@Carmen Sandiego: I was thinking of the same thing!

But im thinking maybe this year ill splash some extra cash and maybe get a pixel 4xl, it'll be my first time upgrading to a flag ship.

I've always bought phones under $300 so it is a big step for me haha!!

          • @yht: for under $250 phone just will do the job just fine… :)

            ANDROID 10

          • +3

@yht: I wouldnt expect oppo to release many software updates for phones.

they have far to many models and they'd probably just want you to buy a new one instead.

if you have someone knowledgeable however what you can do is install a 3rd party rom because its a snapdragon cpu.

            https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/oppo-r9s-rooti…

had a quick look and theres not much support on xda with this phone.
with a brand like xiaomi theres a lot more where you can install latest android OS on even a phone older than your r9s

However for under $240 you get a lot of phone for the price.
            https://www.jbhifi.com.au/collections/mobile-phones?q=&hPP=3…

alternative = maybe vivo y12 or realme c2
a touch below this oppo phone.

            or https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/buy/xiaomi-redmi-note-7-32gb…
redmi note 7 - better camera but phone is not exactly new model.

theres the note 8/9 for a little bit more cash

            • @voter1: Cheers

            • @voter1: there are many phones for price under $240 but the question is "How many that run android 10 with NFC??"

you might need to wait for another few years i guess…

having said that… the white $266 offer gone now… sold like peanuts…

              $296 black still available…

        • +2

I still own F1S and still kicking… only recently used a lot for youtube to run nursery song for my twins.

      • It depends, Mate. According to review, it takes time to upload camera, which will be annoying for some.

      • +1

honestly don't think they make money selling at this price, more of getting their name out in the market

    • I had bought one recently for $299 for a mate who was in rush. He's happy so far no complaints.

    • -1

Probably unlikely that these cheaper phones will get much support beyond 12 months and that is if you are lucky.

      • Support in oppo? Good luck
Last time I bothered sending them an email they never responded.
Not sure if that's the case.
However my phone is 2 years old and am update was realised recently.

        • +2

I was kind of amazed Samsung updated the A20 to Android 10. I would be happy with a sub $200 phone to at least get one major update. Really you want to replace these phones every 3 years. Batteries are tired by that point, and <$200 will have improved significantly enough by that point. :)

        • try online chat… they're pretty good… respond on spot…

well at least that's my experience with them… only covid their office is close for public…

          • @thomalfa: Thanks, maybe I'll try it I needed. They fixed the aggressive app closing issue, there only remaining problem is that the launcher keeps on flipping back to default

    • +1

I'm happy with it. Paid $299 a week ago at JB hi-fi. Get a different camera app and it works great. Very snappy. Wonder if I can get the difference back from JB..?

      • JBHiFi have a price drop policy. So you should try.

      • can try if lucky get something back…

good thing that they shut me yesterday when trying to match eBay…

now even better price on sale

      • +1

what camera app do you use?

      • Just got it for $254 an hour ago, cant say much about it yet, still sorting it out haha. The specs can't lie, few specific apps, like camera, can't go wrong :)

      • What camera app did you use for your phone mate? I'm using the stock camera and the photos taken with are horrible.

    • I've got the Ax5 price is a little cheaper than this. It runs everything I throw at it and it survives drops plenty with the case that came with it. It receives regular updates the last one was 3 days ago. Had over a little over a year with no issues.

  • How does this compare with Oppo Reno Z?

    • I haven't tried out the A52 but I have owned the Reno Z for the last ~6 months and it is fantastic. What stands out to me about it is the display which is miles ahead of any other phone I've owned. I strongly recommend it if you find it for a good price.

  • Some more info in this deal

  • It's white though…

    • +14

Chance of you buying an Australian made phone is between -1% and 0%.

      • +7

Those numbers seem a little too optimistic.

    • If think its necessary to save money…

    • +3

I guess you're going to stop using mobile phone soon? Maybe stop using all electronics?

      • +2

The only way he's getting all Australian made is if he goes full bush.

    • Keep dreaming.

  • Hi OP, I have no experience with zippay.

I wonder if we could avoid any additional cost incur at zippay???

I read it somewhere it does apply for the establishment fee of $25.

    • +1

Isn't it just $6 monthly fee?

      • I'm not sure… that's why i'm asking…

I read it that $6 only kick in if it doesn't get pay off within the month, but it says something abt establishment fee…

I'm looking for ozb who experience with zippay to explain…

        • Ok, if set up account and buy any day of this month, if you pay full amount before set date next month ( can be last day of next

month ) then you pay No $6 Fee or any other fee. They will keep charging you $6 per month until balance is 0.

    • +1

I used it once. No establishment fee to my knowledge.

    • I signed up on ZipPay to get the $20 off then after a few days closed the account with no cost. keep in mind you have to pay the purchase price off in full prior to getting in touch with them to close the account.

      • Do they do a credit check

        • Unsure to be honest, there was a preapproved capped amount of $1,000 available yet there was also an option to apply for more potentially warranting a credit check?!

        • +1

i think that only if you proceed with zip money… that's kind of like personal loan…

but shouldn't if just zippay… cause you use credit or debit card for the transaction.

Having said that, possible as well if they're interest with your financial record.

  • +1

    too much catch it seems

  • -3

There are rumours floating around that user data from Chinese manufacturer phones like OPPO, ZTE etc are stored on Chinese intelligence servers.

Don't know if it's true but just a heads up

    • +4

      Wasn't this always the case?

    • +10

And it's probably not just Chinese companies you have to be worried about doing this 🙄

    • +2

Everyone is in business of spying, left, right and center. This world is run on fear. Everyone worries the other side is gonna get them. So, I don't care. After all it is the society that brought us to where we are now and you can just go with the flow.

But if you want conspiracy theories…
Say, the Chinese government takes an interest in you and wants to get you. The easiest way would be to check which number belongs to your family and just use that number pretending it is one of your family members asking you to meet somewhere or something. Bam, they got you.

But then, the west can do the same.

As a society, you got what you didn't ask for, but because of your indifference you still got it. And given how governments are paranoid, I wouldn't be surprised if eventually you had a hidden camera installed in just about anywhere. After all we don't want you to do something wrong even if unintentional.

The world was never truly about us, but about me and that is the downfall of humanity.

      • +7

I wouldn't be surprised if eventually you had a hidden camera installed in just about anywhere

We're already one foot in with people willing to pay for the privilege of Google Home and Amazon Alexa listening devices.

        • Unfortunately governments and companies (organisations) are already spying on us on our computer and smartphones, etc. Though I wouldn't be surprised if there are already bugging devices installed inside (the walls of) our homes too.

    • +5

      Aren't iPhones made in China?

      • Yes I think they are. A lot of products are manufactured in China because of the cheap labours, etc.

    • Central Intelligence Agency sounds better.

    • No one cares about your nude selfies or pr0n you downloaded. If you're worries so much maybe stop using electronics and computers and just go live under the cave in the forest.

  • Which Google andriod software does it have? Is it better than a20 or similar?

  • +4

The real positive to get this phone over Samsungs is gcam support.

  • Im guessing you need to be a student to get a Unidays discount? It's not just something you can sign up for and get their discounts?

  • +1

Good timing, missus needs a new phone. Any idea how long it will be on sale for?

  • Does it come with a COVID19 discount? ;)

I note that the Melbourne distribution centre for Catch is one of the clusters.

    • +2

I'm eager for the COVID19%OFF discount codes if we find a vaccine by 2021 boxing day :)

  • I know Catch is local and people generally don't like tobydeals but if you really want NFC you could get the Redmi Note 8T for the same price (if they're actually in stock that is…)
Effectively the same specifications except the Oppo has Android 10 already while the Redmi only has 9 officially right now and the Oppo has a bigger battery.
    https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=10194&idPhone2=9946#diff-

    • +3

      The a52 has NFC

      • True that's weird it doesn't show up on gsmarena.

        • +1

No B28 on that model Redmi Note 8T from TobiDeals.

    • +2

Oppo larger battery and local warranty makes it a win, plus as mentioned it has NFC too

  • +1

These catch deals reminds me of the $79-20 discounts from Amazon AU when first launched. Basically (almost) everything becomes a good deal with 10% off stacked with $20 discounts. Just a pity you cant triple dip with 15%-20% off giftcards.

  • Out of stock or expired? Seems in Stock to me but the price is back up to $299.
Socks, I would've 100% got one. Been looking for a $200 good snapdragon

    • +1

if you're grabbing a black one… only increase by $27 compared to advertise above… still a bargain compares to this

however not sure if it will work with this deal.

FYI I grabbed a black one as personal preference…

    • +1

The one I posted was sold by Catch. the one in stock is by Bing Lee

      • but bing lee is not selling at $266, is it???

  • it's in sock, showing $266 now?
