Lol thanks. I'm genuinely curious about what these are used for. Is it just geeks who like stats? Higgins tryhards wanting to detect the next supercell?

      • when to bring in the potted plans or turn on warmers, or sprinklers …etc

they are not usually used on it's own unless you have kids and want them to run to the other side of the yard just because. ;)

      • +2

Yep, geek who likes stats here. That's basically why I have one…
Good to know exactly how much rain has fallen at my place. I know I could just use a rain guage for that. But where's the fun in that…

  • IMHO, https://www.amazon.com.au/ECOWITT-Weather-Station-Powered-Ou… is a better buy if a weather station is what you're after.

    • I think you need to pull out your phone to see what's happening with that one.

This one has a stand-alone display.

      • Being able to access your data anywhere (phone) vs being only able to access it when at home and looking at the screen.

        • do you have this? based on the reviews there, it seems that you have to have your phone in proximity to the same wifi in order to upload data to their servers or even to view meaningful data.

        • The one in OP also uploads to servers (through the screen device). Can send to weather underground and ecowitt (can also set to send to personal web server). You can access all the data there anytime.

The screen also has a temp/humidity sensor in it (perhaps that one does too), which is useful.

  • That screen is exactly the same as my Pantech unit.
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PanTech-Weather-Station-Wifi-Wir…

    • Pantect, Ecowitt and a few others all sell the Fine Offset stuff with their own branding as far as I know.

      http://www.foshk.com/Wifi_Weather_Station/

      • Yep they all use the same WH2900 weather stations units.

    • Yep - although Ecowitt are very responsive to enquiries and support. I had an issue with the wireless connection and they went out of their way to help.

Buy google home much cheaper and better Option…..

  • Hi rep when will we see the WH43 on Amazon?

  • So, I'm a little confused about the range of products Ecowitt produce, and trying to work out the difference. The cheaper GW1001 for example, doesn't have the console but seems to support more additional sensors (8 WH31 temp/humidity, 2 WH41/43 air sensors http://www.ecowitt.com/upfile/202005/WS2910%20Manual.pdf versus that plus an extra 2 air sensors, lightning, 8 soil, and 4 water leak sensors http://www.ecowitt.com/upfile/202005/GW1001%20Manual.pdf). Then there are the models that split the rain sensor to a separate location, which is nice but the rain gauge isn't solar powered which doesn't appeal.

Anyhow, is the cheaper model with the USB gateway the better unit to get as it supports more sensors if you don't want/need a physical monitor?

The USB connected ones can be problematic with connection drop-outs that are notoriously difficult to pinpoint and resolve. Most seem to be power glitch/spike/surge/whatever related, but others are something else.

If you don't have a UPS to run a USB-connected one off, I would not recommend. Get a WiFi one.

      • Thanks for the info. A lot of USB powered device issues can be traced back to bad cables and/or USB power supply (similar to issues people have had with raspberry pi's), and I do have a UPS, but I might do some further research before pushing the buy button, and stick with my old station for now that is currently still working.

which model would be able to send stats/data to my own server to process? it looks like even the other model mentioned in the comments here are dependant on mobile phones to be in the same vicinity to work?

    • This one should be able to do it (haven't tried myself yet, but I have the equivalent pantech).
You can set a custom web server as the destination for the ecowitt data.

  • Rep, can you add additional temperature sensors to this one? I mean these ones: https://www.amazon.com.au/ECOWITT-Multi-Channel-Temperature-…

  • +1

I purchased two of these and one has stopped working, second one is starting to play up and reporting erratically. Both are around a year old. I would not recommend this.
Also bear in mind the wind measurement is not that useful as typically wind speed is taken from 10m from ground level. To install this at 10m is not practical.

    • I mounted mine on my roof…
Couldn't find a decent place to mount around the yard that didn't have issues or look like an eyesore.

      • I thought about that but decided against it as it needs to be accessible as the rain gauge needs cleaning of debris.

    • Battery??

      • Solar powered, so the battery is supposed to last 6 months or so. Figure I'll take the 5 minutes to set up a ladder and check the rain guage for debris when needed. Probably less often, given there's little debris from trees up there anyway. I'll be cleaning it every week if it was anywhere else.

        Gotta clear the gutters anyway…
