Can anyone recommend a good reusable mask?

    • Scarf?

Just get some well-made ones off eBay. I have cotton ones e.g. these as opposed to polyester.

Will the government be giving them out?
    I'm broke and unemployed.

    • What about sewing your own?

There's "instant" no-sew ones as well. Google or YouTube is your friend.

Do you have an old shirt or piece of fabric lying around?

No Sew Mask. If no filter, insert another cloth layer.

So either way there's no proof that this second wave is as a result of the BLM protests. It could have been from the BLM protests or it could have been from the thousands of people that spent their weekends at major shopping centres before or after the protests.

          • +2

@kanmen: Sure. That's what "community transmission" is. You don't know the source.

We have made so many sacrifices and we have chosen to stay inside during the lockdowns because we wanted to do our part and contribute to beating this thing. There are community members who are susceptible to this disease and we wanted to prevent a potential spread to them, so we stayed inside to protect ourselves and our community.

Yet, there are people, knowing the risks, who have decided for everyone else that a potential virus outbreak was a-okay.

thousands of people that spent their weekends at major shopping centres before or after the protests.

Source? Was any covid-positive protester present at a shopping centre after the June 6 protest? Yes

Covid-19 incubation period is up to 14 days+

          • +1

@kanmen: All we know is this second wave thing started 2-3 weeks after they allowed the protests. it could be a coincidence.

      • -4

        Lol ok

      • +16

While it has been proven that there were multiple people with COVID-19 at the protest, it wasn't just direct transmission resulting from BLM - It was also the dramatic shift in attitude following the protests.

People simply stopped seeing the significance of individual actions - We had people missing final moments with loved ones, missing Easter celebrations with family, the births of grandchildren etc etc, all in a collective effort to cull the spread of COVID-19 - But when the government allowed BLM protests to take place, allowing 10,000 people to march in the streets without fining them or any form of punishment, the attitude changed to "If 10,000 BLM people can gather without consequence, surely us all going to little Johnny's 3rd birthday is fine."

BLM is a major factor of the second wave of COVID-19, and anyone who says otherwise is a virtue signaling apologist - Save it for the twitter mobs.

        • People simply stopped seeing the significance of individual actions

Yes, the apathy and/or complacency kicked in + community transmission.

          Kaboom. Outbreak.

        • +2

Most of them were wearing masks, most of them were social distancing and they were outside, that's why there weren't many, if any, people infected at the protests.

The attitude had definitely changed a fair bit before the protests. My local supermarkets are in a shopping centre and there were a lot more people there a couple of weeks before the protest. I know since then people have tried to say that it started with the protests but when I saw the hoards of people in the shopping centre and not social distancing or wearing masks in an enclosed area I noticed other people commenting on the same thing. I think this would have had a significantly greater effect.

The other issue was the lifting of restrictions. People were blamed for hanging out with their families, but they were told they could. Restrictions shouldn't have been lifted when they were, we had the Cedar Meats outbreak. Of course it was going to lead to an increase in cases.

If the BLM protests had any effect it should have taught people that masks, social distancing and meeting people in outdoor areas rather than enclosed spaces are effective. If they decided it meant they should get close to people in enclosed spaces without masks they're idiots.

          • +2

@Miss B: This is actually the problem with the argument - Even if "Most of them" are doing the right thing - It was completely avoidable, there was no need to do it. BLM protesters put themselves and their virtue signaling, "Look at me", upvote-seeking attitude above the public health.

            • @ajr5k: And you believe that would have a greater impact than a situation where most people were not wearing masks, where a large proportion of people were not social distancing, where they were in an enclosed area and frivolously shipping at places like Big W and Kmart? On multiple occasions in many locations around Victoria.

I'm not saying there couldn't have been a few cases at the protests that contact tracing has missed. It seems unlikely it contributed significantly to where we are now. It seems that neither actually led to the initial significant increase in cases and it was mostly workplaces and family gatherings, which were both allowed, that led us to where we are now.

              • +2

                @Miss B: I didn't say that, nor do I believe that. That is "what-about-ism".
People shopping for non-essentials are just as bad as BLM protestors.

The instructions are quite clear - Stay home unless you are doing one of the four allowed activities.
Protesting an event that took place on the opposite side of the world is not one of those four activities.

                • @ajr5k: You seemed as though you believed the BLM protesters were the only ones who needed to be called out. You also talked about it like it was the start of the change in attitudes, which made me think you didn't believe the irresponsible behaviour in shopping centres beforehand were part of the problematic change in attitudes.

It was the treatment and deaths of black people here in Australia that was the reason for the protests. I made the decision not to go to the protests, in part because we were told not to attend by Dan Andrews, although it was also my personal concerns about the virus. He was clear that people should not attend. I can understand why some people who were directly affected felt they needed to go and I can understand the people going to support them. I have the luxury of waiting until the virus is under control though as I'm not directly impacted.

                • +2

@ajr5k: The argument that people thought they could become complacent after the BLM protests is just as unfounded and unsubstantiated as the idea that the BLM protests led to this outbreak.

There were 5 reasons to leave home at that time at that time and visiting friends and family was one of them.

On May 13th up to 5 people were allowed in homes and up to 10 outside. Here are the hoards in May The SDA also spoke out about people getting tested at shopping centres but instead of going home, heading into the shops.

From June 1 up to 20 people could gather at homes, restaurants and outside areas, the BLM protests were held mid-June.

Shopping centres began to fill up way before then and I've not ever heard anyone say 'oh, people held protests, we can do whatever we want.' People thought the risk had passed and were probably sick of being inside.

You can speculate all you want, but it's literally pure conjecture and bias to blame our second wave on the BLM protests. You might not have liked the protests and disagreed with it but there's no proof to be able to claim it's the reason for the increase of cases now.

        • +3

Errm, exsqueeze me? Vic is actually the only state that punished any BLM rally attendees so far, they fined the organisers… By that logic NSW numbers shld have also exploded, therefore logic (and current data) suggests something else is at play.

          • @SkMed: They didn't go far enough - every single attendee should have been fined for breaching the public health order. They all breached the order, not just one or two organisers. They all decided that the Twitter "clout" was worth more than the health of the public.

Actions speak much louder than words, and by allowing the BLM protests the Andrews government ushered in a sense of complacency. Nobody cared after that because "people simply stopped seeing the significance of individual actions".

            • @ajr5k: lol, you're kidding right!? You really think it's possible for the police to fine ALL attendees at the protest? Even if that were possible you really think its a good idea for police to be stopping, talking to, and handling items of each individual protester… Thats a guarenteed way to increase transmission lol. Fining the organisers was the right move, it meant we saw a well organised rally, social distancing being practiced where possible, masksworn etc. Fining the organisers has prevented them from organising more rallies (while rallies continue in other states where fines haven't been issued).

Andrews condemned the protest and asked people not to go (just as other premieres did, yet they're not condemend as Andrews seems to be). Either way, Andrews didn't actually possess the power to stop the protests, its the decision of the supreme court. Also we all know that if police had have tried to stop the protests by force it would have resulted in clashes and a MUCH greater risk of transmission (pepper spraying protestors in a confined space like they did in Sydney station for example, coghing and spluttering all over police and each other is not really a good tactic to reduce transmission of a virus lol)

I didnt attend the protest, and didnt think it should have been organised either FYI, but really shits me when people try to condemn Andrews or Vic in general when we've arguably done more than any other state to condemn/prevent BLM protests (fining the organisers)

            • +2

@ajr5k: The earlier protests by anti-vaxers and 5G nutters played no part in your theory then?

              • @[Deactivated]: How many people rocked up to the nutters congregation?

If an outbreak followed 2-3 weeks after, would you have connected the two events (nutcase protest and outbreak)?

    • +1

Yes, just like hpow it ramped up in NSW after their BLM protest which was equal in size… oh, wait… it didn't.

      • +6

It only takes 1 person to ruin it for everyone. That's the risk.

        These are the data for:

    • yeah because victoria was the only state with protestors

Am wondering if you need to remove your mask during self checkout at woolies and coles?

    • +1

I don't think so i see people in my area still having their mask on while checking out its probably have to be taken off in the bank

  • +1

So do I have to be wearing it inside the car or can i take it off and put it back when i get out of the car

    • You don't need to wear one if driving solo

  • +13

About god damn time. Asia just does it, white people um and ah over it then do it.

It's simple, when you cough or sneeze you expel droplets everywhere. If you cover your mouth when doing so it can reduce the amount of droplets expelled into the surrounding atmosphere. Yes, masks may not capture virus sized particles but at least larger droplets will be caught and at least the spread will be mitigated to a degree (however large or small). JFC white people get your act together.

    • -3

"JFC white people get your act together."

What are your views on eating bat soup?

      • +4

To play along with your whataboutism, I think it's gross, just like how I'm sure vegetarians think it's gross to eat meat. If you're trying to point the finger at Asians, bat soup is consumed in other continents like Africa also.

I've found mixed feedback in trying to find an answer for this. The closest I can find is the quote:
""It's not like police will be pulling over every single vehicle or every single person to check you are wearing a mask but err on the side of caution"

I read this as you should be wearing one while driving - However there is also a general exception "common sense should guide us" - Which I would read as don't wear one if you are impeding your vision or have medical issues etc.

  • Victora unlocked 2 week before should have last time.

  • Merged from Victorian Government Mask Distribution Possibilities

    From https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-07-10/victoria-coronavirus-… :

[Premier Daniel Andrews] said the Government would order 2 million reusable masks for community distribution, and boost local manufacturing capabilities.

"We will also in the interim provide up to 1 million additional single use masks," he said.

The Government is still working out how to distribute those masks.

    What are the likely possibilities?

How have other countries done it?

    • what he should do is go by voter roll and pick the most infected lgas and just mail them out

    • +1

      awesome
      everyone gets …. 1 mask?

maybe send it by aus post
get people to line up and.collect?

Probably overseen by the same incompetent security firm that was guarding the quarantine hotels.

Do yourself a favor. Get some old shirts together and make your own, probably quicker and safer.

    • -1

Make them available from your local health professional.

Receptionist can hand them out for free and note it on patient's file. Only take a few seconds to do.

      • +6

Please don't suggest this. Last thing we need is a huge line into our already small offices.

Just mail them out to households and spare us the nightmare of having thousands of people stream into our already small space.

        • Will end up being pharmacies I am presuming..

If only every house an apartment had some kind of receptacle. You know, to to take letter and packaged sized things. Then the Govt could just mail them out.
