Great. As a right wing columnist, I can now ignore the main issue and write about how ridiculous it is that Dan Andrews is forcing us to wear a worn and hole ridden football scarf before ducking into Woolies. This will get the talkback crowd going.

        • +4

Thanks Andrew. We await your next article.

        • +3

I'd rather wear a mask than be intubated, just saying…

        • +1

And if we had proper lockdowns that we know work, what would the talkback crowd think then? I suggest our leaders actually lead, and actually listen to the scientists and medical researchers instead of making it up as they go along and cherry picking medical advice. The 'talkback crowd" aren't ever happy unless they're complaining and being outraged.

          • @syousef: Yes lets look to the WHO as a great source.

            • Non transmission via human to human

            • Chinese officials are heros and the world thanks them

I agree with everything the WHO says.

        • Go look at Thailand.

It wasn't masks that kept their stats low.

          Your welcome.

          • +1

            @Other:

            • The masks may help. A little.
            • We needed to be locked down for a lot longer.
            • There is a lot of dumb luck involved in keeping this virus under control. We almost did it despite many missteps.
            • WHO with all its flaws is better than no international health organisation.
            • And it's "you're welcome" not "your welcome".
      • +6

        What about a balaclava?

      • It's annoying to have a whole scarf wrapped around your head especially if you have to wear it while at work for 8 hours so I'm assuming that is why people are flocking to buy the ones with the ear elastics

  • +14

I bought some masks in Feb and thought I'd never get to use them.

    • Weren't the govt going to give out free masks again soon?

    • +3

So cringe. They look like the cod skins a 15 year old would purchase from a loot box

  • Quote from article:

"To address this increase, an inspection and enforcement blitz will be carried out in workplaces across the state.
WorkSafe, Emergency Management Victoria and Victoria Police will focus on at-risk workplaces, including
distribution centres, call centres and meat processing centres."

Can someone please clarify - does this mean they need to be worn in offices and places of business as well?

    • +20

The press conference stated that 80% of recent transmissions have occurred in the workplace. If you cannot work from home, then yes, wear a mask when at your place of work.

      The direct quote was:

"If you are out of your home for one of the four permitted reasons, then you need to be wearing a mask and I stress or a face coverings”

      • +4

Believe it was workplaces predominatly being 2 hotels.

        • +8

It’s now mostly workers of aged care homes, but recent outbreaks have included offices, schools, supermarkets, fast food outlets and abattoirs to name a few.

Any kind of workplace is susceptible, and to think it’s just hotels as workplaces is a dangerous and ignorant belief.

          • -4

            @jjjaar:

to think it’s just hotels as workplaces is a dangerous and ignorant belief.

But the German scientist stated schools are safe.

LOL any previous winters where children doesn't bring home germs? Just adults trying to shift children into schools.

              • @netjock: Are you telling me this virus is common cold/flu virus 'Doctor netjock' ?

                • +1

@frewer: No. The idea of children as a "brake" on infection is fantasy.

                  • @netjock: So you call those scientists/doc are in the clouds ? Roger that.

                    • @frewer: So twist what you hear to what you want to hear Roger that.

                      • @Cletus vandamme: Can you or @netjock given any study/research suggest otherwise ? Or we just go with opinions here ?

                        • @frewer: Here you go

Only reason it might be lower is because of school closures.

Also this: There continues to be limited information on the contribution of children to transmission of COVID-19

Not saying you are wrong but as we all know due to the short duration of this pandemic so far assume almost anything is possible regarding transmission.

                          • @netjock: Then how do you explain this https://youtu.be/yc6Lmxh8NTg?t=334

I think you missed the bigger picture. I dont care if Im wrong let's make the best idea a winner. What Im concern is the none ending of conflict of advice and study/research. CDC says this, German's study suggest that, nvm those we follow .gov.au advice only. Im sorry WHAT ???????

                            • +1

@frewer: Wind it back a little. Stop trying to pick advice. Assume all transmission types is in play. Babies / Children / Adults and all surfaces the virus would survive on.

A lot of the research and advice is being nice. It isn't world ending but you can prepare within what is possible with a few small things. Putting a mask on your kids might hurt your wallet but who knows. When you get firm research published it might be too late.

When this thing blew up first I did a lot of reading on SARS, MERS and Influenza then Spanish Flu. Assume anything is possible.

Not at all, Im trying to point how politician use 'science' to suit their AGENDAs.

                                Assume anything is possible.

Agree, that include “Children may even act as a brake on infection,” Reinhard Berner. Thank you for agree with me
Idk about the others, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord Most High. So He will protect my household, not a flimsy cloth mask.

@frewer: Assuming anything is possible means take every precaution to every reasonable eventuality.

It doesn't mean get on your knees and talk to your invisible friend because you're assuming it's possible that invisible friend will save you.

take every precaution to every reasonable eventuality.

Good for you.But I dont think I will take advice from a stranger who discharge /refusing to explain/take what the health official says ( kudo to you too, independent thinker, yes I assume that ). I guess my point is this :The nine most terrifying words in the English language are ’I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’ Ronald Reagan(the 40th president of the United States). Mind you the USA has a strong Constitution not like Australia.

Let's not argue who Jesus was and still is. That matter already settle. It is the matter of the heart not the head. My Jesus already saved me many times and He will continue to do it. Let's assume you are RIGHT for a minute and my memories/experiences were just glitch in the matrix. Then who will help ? Once a year mental-talk-about-day or talk to doc over the internet ? I rather become one with the system

Anyhow you do you, have a great day.

@ozbjunkie: Jesus didn't protect many preachers and church goers in the USA - or elsewhere across the globe. There appears to be a fundamental disconnect between frewer's expectations of experts and his understanding of how (medical) science works and evolves. Disagreement has always been a part of scientific/medical knowledge development. Faith is no excuse for ignorance or lack of personal and societal action and responsibility. Nothing wrong with educated skepticism but that's a long way from complete distrust.

N95 won't really help either as it can enter through other areas such as the eye. Highly recommend just diy'ing it as the masks are there to prevent you spreading the disease as opposed to receiving it.

    • +2

      N95 or better

      Better = full hazmat suit?

      • +1

I fancy some "Fallout" style power suit. I'm dead set I'd totally wear it to go shopping

        • take a gatling gun with you to deal with surface dwellers.

    • i'd have to spend another $10.01 to offset deliv :(

I won't tell, it can be Victoria's secret.

It's not all of Victoria… only currently the lockdown areas,

  • +10

As far as I know, not an expert, these masks more prevent you transmitting the virus should you already have it, than they do you catching the virus.

Hygiene practices, such as hand washing, are much more important imho.

    • +23

Well if it prevents or lowers the chances of you transmitting the virus, it would also lower the chance of the next person catching it (from you).

Might as well assume and react like if everyone has the virus, in order to control the spread asap and while its still controllable. React too slowly and it might turn like the US. Everyone do their part and get through the pain asap, rather than dragging the pain out.

    • +7
      • -6

Doesn't matter. 'Face coverings' won't filter out the virus.

        • +18

'Face coverings' won't filter out the virus.

It should be 'Face coverings' won't filter out ALL the virus.

Nothing is 100%… but the less virus there is floating around for other people to inhale, the better.

    • +7

As far as I know, not an expert, these masks more prevent you transmitting the virus should you already have it

      Correct.

Social distancing should have helped but people can't seem to get enough of each other that is why it happened

    • +1

It's all important. Multiple points of attack required.

  • Do you have to wear one when driving a car with the windows up?

    • if you are outside your home it needs to be on

      • +1

        MMM Ok. The new normal.

        • -1

sigh… yes.. oh well I will get used to it…

      • +5

No it doesn’t. You don’t have to wear a mask if it’s impractical - such as when running, however a face covering still needs to be carried.

Need to wait for further clarification as to whether the police will consider it impractical to wear whilst driving alone in an enclosed vehicle.

        • +3

Hard for those with prescription as it fogs up your glasses so common sense would be not to wear one while driving. I would wear one if you're in a Uber as the driver probably won't be wearing one if it fogs up their glasses

          • +1

@pippohippo: If I'm not wrong, don't the masks work by reducing the chance of a person to spread it to others and not reducing the chance of getting it from others? So if an Uber driver doesn't wear one and he has COVID, your masks may not do very much to reduce your chances of getting it.

          • @pippohippo: Ideally if you put your mask on properly, there should be no air venting from the top, bottom, or sides - not fogged up glasses. Understandably, especially with makeshift masks, that might not be possible…

So going out backdoor to clothesline in a single dwelling fenced on all sides?

Seriously? Who makes this shit up.

        • +11

That's not in public. Still part of your house.

        • +10

No. Dan Andrews already said common sense applies.

          • +11

@PleasureMe: That's a bad idea. Can't expect people to have common sense.

          • +2

@PleasureMe: Problem is common sense doesn’t always apply when the police decide to charge someone.

That’s why people want hard and fast rules.

    • +2

Yeah on that. Surely if your driving alone in the car you don't need to wear one. I know Uber drivers have them on, but I just think it's over the top to be using them when driving alone.

    • No

    • No. You don't have to wear one in the car if you are driving solo or if you are running

  • +10

If it fogs up your glasses, pop a tissue underneath the bridge of your nose, helps for me.

    • +4

How do you get a tissue underneath the bridge of your nose?

      Thanks for the tip.

  • +22

Do you have to wear one when you are robbing a bank?

    • +35

Not if you’re running away from the location, you still need to carry one though.

    • +3

For work safe and health in your profession, please wear at least 3 ply mask under your mask. Premier said transmission at work place is at the highest risk now.

    • +1

No. Dan Andrews specifically said you don't wear one when entering a bank

    • +1

In fact you are legally required to remove them when you enter a bank.

    • +6

I always wore one for bank robberies even before coronavirus

      • Too obvious. Rookie mistake.

        People hire hackers these days.
