Probably couldn’t do much gaming if any on this.

    • +2

Yeah, not much chop for gaming but would make a great kid/grannie box.

      • +13

        Granny boxes are the best.

        • Gee, I knew councils were letting people get away with a lot putting in granny flats but that's a pretty small box to squeeze your grandparent into.

      dota2 / LoL / csgo / valorant … 720p

    Perfect for Free Cell.

If this can be called a gaming computer, then anything can

    • +2

Its a game for those who dont know better trying to boot a drive with no OS.

  • Bought one for. 1080p 60fps fortnite

  • Is this a good deal?

    • Maybe buy a graphics card for a couple hundred to throw in but the CPU will be a bottle neck for gaming. Only really good for web surfing/ word processing

    • It's reaaonable if you just need a computer to use. Office work, this is fine. The upgrades are limited given you can't use newer generation CPU with the A320 motherboard. For older or less demanding games, this is fine as well (one could always add on a graphics card).

I'm not so sure, I feel like a used dell/hp/lenovo office pc with an i5 6600 or something would be better since the Athlon is dual core (with 4 threads but still). Though I don't know much about the Athlon's performance admittedly.

      • +1

        Nailed it.
Anything before Xen is kind of meh anyway

        • Still better performance than many low end below $600-$750 laptops.

            @ozhunter68:

            low end below $600-$750 laptops

Laptops are pretty much always going to have lower performance compared to desktops

            • +1

@theg00s3: Sure, get that. But look how many people are still getting heaps of productive tasks/web surfing/video streaming out of

low/mid range laptops. If you can get hold of windows 10 licence or linux, have a monitor to use then this would make a

good home/work machine for the price, with option for light gaming with graphics card added.

  • +2

This is more for general office work haha

  • Very good deal OP. Would definitely buy if I need one.

This can certainly handle some basic gaming.

  • +1

Add OS at $169 for windows 10 home.
Probably better to buy an ex-corporate PC (with Intel CPU and Win 10 licence) for a couple of hundred if you like that sort of thing.
Or I managed to recycle a Win 10 licence from an old PC I had junked.

    • +2

      Why not Linux?

      • +1

Linux is about to go mainstream!
Been waiting 20 years so far.
Dual boot is best if you need Linux.

        • I switched to Linux Mint in 2009 (after trying many distro's over years, because you can, unlike M$ BS!), and never looked back.

I work doing residential MS Windows help & repair. After a day of dealing with Win 10 f-ups, I want to kiss my Mint PC when I get home!

          :)

About what you'd expect to pay for something like this.

    Parts cost from PC Byte.

$88 - AMD Athlon 220GE APU with Vega 3 GPU
    $79 - A320M Motherboard
    $48 - 8GB DDR4
    $38 - 120GB SSD
$59 - Case with power supply
    Total: $312

    Parts cost from Umart.

$79 - AMD Athlon 3000G APU with Vega 3 GPU (Substituted with the newer 3000G as Umart doesn't stock the 220GE)
    $89 - A320M Motherboard
    $46 - 8GB DDR4 RAM
    $29 - 120GB SSD
$65 - Case with power supply
    Total: $308

    • if you can find cheap b350/b450 … that 220ge can do 4ghz oc

      3000g is locked though

      • 3000G is fully unlocked.

As far as I know only the CPU is unlocked on the 220GE. The IGP is stuck at 1GHz while on the 3000G it can be pushed up to ~1.7GHz

    • That memory better be Rev.E. Single channel for an iGPU is terrible already.

  • dat green stripe tho

    • +2

      like fully hektik brahhh

  • +1

Yeah, unfortunately dual core desktops in the day and age are past their use by dates, there are plenty of refurbished i5/i7 desktops in this price range on ebay and here that would be more futureproof.

If this was ryzen then I'd be all for it

  • -2

pft. sif you couldnt build better for $500

  • This or Henry Cavills build?

  • My PC just died….any suggestions on a budget gaming PC deal? I read here Ryzen is mentioned alot (I've been out of the PC game for a long time, still running a i5-4440 + RX570).

I'm looking for a cheap barebone PC with Ryzen (save myself putting together), and reuse my 16GB RAM + RX570. I just play the occasional games (GTA V/RD2) so no need for top specs…mostly just surf and movies

    Thanks for your help

    • your current system is still good spec wise as a budget 1080p gaming PC, can you fix it?

might be worth it with a new SSD and fresh OS,

      • yea got a new SSD too (Samsung Evo 1TB), and already have win10. Just that I think the PSU is dead (making high pitched noise even when PC is off while plugged in)…

        • yea, that does not sound good,

get a new PSU for sure, you will need one anyway if you build a newer PC,

        • Then replace the PSU. Go higher in real Watts.

          • @wetwork: Yea a 650-750 is probably the sweet spot.

            • @Rod M: thanks guys, will do. I'm already on the hunt for a good PSU deal. Was tempted by the coolermaster deal:
              https://www.centrecom.com.au/cooler-master-v1200w-fully-modu…

But not sure if this will fit my case, I've checked the manual it says compatible with "Standard ATX PS2 PSU", I've checked the dimensions of the coolermaster and it is a bit longer than the standard ATX PS2 I believe…

So now just need to find a gold/platinum PSU that fits inside the case…

  • My personal preference when it comes to desktop computers for office work/light gaming is to buy a second hand older generation PC (~4yr old) which was high spec at the time.

Buying a low end PC like this is literally e-waste. A 4th Gen Intel i7 would be a better option.

  • It's an odd build for 2020. When would it have been built?

Correction - the Athlon 220GE only came out last year.

  • is this a zen 2 motherboard?

    • It can support it, but it won't unleash the true potential without PBO and memory OCing. The stock memory is probably garbage.

  • I built a 200GE system early last year as a web/youtube/Skype/office PC for my wife, (200GE, B350, 8GB, 512GB SSD) and it is cooled with a fanless arctic cooling heatsink, only fan in the case is in the PSU and that is off all of the time,

been flawless for its intended use and completely silent,

    • I'm interested in that fanless cooling setup Rod. Do you have details?
      thanks

  • Really isn't a bad find for an entry / basic PC for someone who wants something brand new that should physically last just as a long as a good refurb dell i5/i7.

Won't obviously run any popular modern games but $300 delivered and put an old hard 3.5" drive in there or purchase a basic one for under $50-80 plus operating system you are good to go!

    • Eww no SSD.

  • TIL they still make Athlons

  • Just get a refurbished Optiplex and chuck an SSD in there. Much better.
