I'm sorry, i just fixed the title.

  • This is perfect if you planing to get second monitor and have usb-c port on your laptop. No need for a docking station

  • Do these work with streaming apps. I gave used previously and it stops working.

Tbh feels a bit wasteful to me to take up all the power of a type c port for just a hdmi 2 connection

I recently bought this other extension and feel like its much more useful as you dont need to buy an additional hdmi2 cable(+$10) and you can charge your laptop normally through usb c at the same time

Its nearly double the price($27) tho, so if u already have a hdmi2 cable and another way to charge your laptop then the post is more suitable

    • What model laptop are you using this with ?

      • Macbook pro 13, which uses thunderbolt 3 so should work on any laptop with that port

        • Thanks
Wonder would this work with the Lenovo ThinkPad E15 Gen 2 as its being charged through a type c port (65w charger) but not thunderbolt 3 ?

          • @chrisie: Looks like your port is a USB 3.2 Type-C Gen 1 similar to a USB 3.0, which has speeds of 5gbps while thunderbolt3 is capable of 40gbps so sadly.. I don't think so but not 100% sure :/

    • Could you plug a normal charging dock into this so that you can still have USB ports? I have a laptop with a single UasB type C port. Comes with a charging dock that has all the ports, but can't do 4k, even if the laptop can do it (tested with a type-C dock that has 4k HDMI but no power delivery).

      • +1

The dock will probably have a usb c output of 5gbps which I'm not sure is enough sorry might be wrong

    • How long is the cable?

      • about 1.8 meters

    • I'm not sure I really trust PD on these accessories. 60W PD means it is not ideal for MBP 15 inch. You also need it connected to the monitor whereas this one you can have an HDMI cable connected to the monitor and the other side connected to the dongle.

Still, this whole USB-C for display is really annoying. Later on, when 4K HDR become popular, another round of dongles will be required. Or, if you are already on 4K/60Hz with HDR, would this dongle actually work? Is it HDMI 2.0a ready? It's annoying Apple already released the two versions of their digital AV dongle with the second one being much better.

  • Op, does this support HDR?

    • +1

Yes, this uses hdmi2 which supports 4k60 HDR
"In order to enjoy the 4K high resolution, please make sure to use HDMI 2.0 cable."

      • +1

Are you sure on this one? A lot of these type of devices can only do 4K60 standard, not HDR. HDR requires additional bandwidth.

HDMI 2.0a is the minimum requirement for 4K60 with HDR.

HDMI 2.0 might be enough to support HDR below 4K. Based on the specs shown, I wouldn't state the dongle supports 4K60HDR.

        • I kinda just double checked, and seems like standard hdmi2 is capable of 4k 60 hdr

          “HDMI 2.0 standard: 4K Ultra HD compatible (3840 x 2160 pixels) at 24, 25, 30 and 60 fps, HDR compatible (HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision).”

Maybe im missing something tho, its p confusing

          https://blog.son-video.com/en/2019/08/is-it-necessary-to-cha…

        • Yeah I thought it needed to be 2.0a or 2.0b. Op can you confirm?

          • @jtb: For future reference… I found a HDR model (has HDR printed on the adapter) available on Amazon US so I'm assuming that this one does not support HDR.
