The P1 500GB isn't a very good deal, because you can get a Kingston A2000 at Centrecom for $95 shipped. Currently unavailable but definitely something to stick around for if you're looking for a 500GB NVMe drive.

    • +3

Can I at least be told why I'm being negged? Is there something wrong with Centrecom? Something wrong with the A2000?

      • +5

I didn't neg you, however I would imagine it's because there is only a $4 difference (plus shipping), and the Kingston drive isn't available as you pointed out

        • +20

It's a superior drive, it uses TLC NAND over the QLC NAND, so I'm not just recommending a barely cheaper alternative. If you were to get the P1 you'd be paying more for less. I just found that you can get it for $92 at Shopping Express too, so you're paying $3 for the extra longevity of TLC NAND and the little speed boost. I think it's well worth it.

          • +1

@Void: Not arguing, as I have no knowledge of the differences, however as someone who just saw NVME, same capacity and a better known brand, that was my read on the situation.

            • +3

@RMBC: They both offer 5 year warranties, so I think the Kingston drive is better or equal to the Crucial drive in every aspect. Though personally I knew Kingston existed long before I knew about Crucial, but Crucial have definitely been around longer.

Edit: Wait no only Micron have been around longer than Kingston, Kingston is older than Crucial.

At this point it just seems like I'm being negged just because I can be. Do I really need to ask why, again? Sure neg me, but at least tell me and other OzBargainers who stumble upon this thread why.

              • +2

@Void: this is ozquestionable bargain these days…

                • +3

@petry: It's getting eerily close to reddit levels of toxicity.

                  • +1

@Void: worlds gone to shit - certainly no reason why this site wouldn't rapidly degenerate at an exponential rate

                    • +1

@petry: You make a valid point.

                  • +3

@Void: Gotta be careful with facts and logic on this site.

People just bandwagon because they don't know anything.

Even when you post sources for claims people are too lazy to read them.

              • +2

@Void: Thanks for all the information on the drives, it's certainly helpful for someone who may not be across the finer points

          • +3

@Void: Ozbargain doesn't seem to like it when their bargains are criticised, even if the criticism is valid.

            • @TeddyBear: It's funny how sometimes they love criticism and at other times they absolutely hate it. On the recent Intel Techfast deal I made a comment about how the 10400 when paired with 2666MT/s memory is actually outperformed by a 3600 with 3200MT/s, meaning their Ryzen prebuilt was superior. It was a positively voted comment, this time not so much. OzBargain is so bipolar lol.

            • @TeddyBear: 'bargains' are often promoted these days - get in the way of the promotion expect to get hit

            • @TeddyBear: You're so right about this. People will neg you for alerting people something isn't of value or a deal even if you're right. It's only until everyone else sees the logic and starts upvoting you that people follow, which is a perfect example of what happened to Rajeh here. Now he's swimming in upvotes.

So much for the independent thinker in modern times, people need to stop being so sheepish. :)

      • +3

I just read your whole thread. Upvoted all your comments because you justified your position! Though I suspect your first comment could have included a little more context / a comparison with an in-stock variant and may have avoided the initial hate. ;)

        • Thanks. I probably should've mentioned the A2000 was a TLC drive at first, rather than just suggesting it without a reason to go for it apart from being $4 cheaper.

          • @Void: That's it, and no problemo! :) .. onwards and upwards, fam!

  • +1

    Is Galax a reliable brand?

    • +1

They're reasonable enough - but to be honest I'd wait until the 3000 series drops for further discounts.

      • +11

I swear every time there's a GPU deal, there's always someone saying this lol

        • +3

Haha no doubt! It really comes down to how urgently you need a GPU imo. No harm in waiting if you can afford to.

        • +1

For good reason, as the 3000 series is expected to come out soon. And if you can drop 1k+ for a graphics card you probably want the best performance and price is of less concern.

          • +1

@Blizzard57: I have a new 3900x setup with a mediocre graphics card at the moment because everyone is telling me to wait… :(

I'll give it till November (afaik) before Cyberpunk 2077 comes out

    • I have a Galax 2080TI and have no issues with it at all, works flawlessly.

    • +1

Yes, long time reputable brand. Their cards are just cheaper here. In some countries, they’re actually more expensive. In fact, I’d recommend Galax over some budget models from other brands, as they come with a metal backplate.

    • I got a Galax 2080 super 2fan variant not knowing what to expect and it works fine, low to mid 60's when running even with Furmark pumping away in the background. Fans got slightly audible but not jet-engine loud or anything.

As for price drops on 2000 series, my understand is Nvidia simply stop producing for a while thus driving up prices as supply diminishes and then drop the new product so as to not devalue their product. I'm sure there'd still be some left on shelves though if you can find them.

Ampere is said to be a 300W part with new 12pin power connector so that will be interesting for anyone looking to update.

  • +2

Agree the Kingston A2000 is much better value.

  • Why is the 2TB QVO or EVO never on sale…

    • 2TB QVO $339 + delivery at Online Computer

      • +10

I saw that but when 1TB is $139 2TB for $339 doesn't seem as good value

        • 2TB you should be grabbting a MX500 for $315 when thery go back on sale (which seems to be every other week at shopping express).

If you want NVMe, Amazon have the PNY XLR8 C3030 2TB ~$370 after cashback. A great performer for the price and TLC not QLC like the 2TB Sabrent Q which is also ~$370 after cashback.

@Skramit: I honestly hadn't considered anything other than Samsung.

I thought they had pretty much had all of the SSD market since they had no real competitors in terms of performance and reliability.

            • +1

@Skxkwkei: Well if you're a brand loyal kinda buyer, then fine. Samsung may have the performance crown in benchmarks, but they also charge a huge price premium on their drives. In the real world, you can tell very little difference in performance between Samsung and it's SSD competitors.

The OzB buyer goes for value rather than brand name generally speaking.

              • @Skramit: Definitely not a brand loyalty thing - I've only recently been looking for SSDs after using my ancient HDD.

From the volume of Samsung deals on this site it just seemed it was pretty much what everyone was buying and the 1TB prices seem pretty good value with cash back.

Thanks for your suggestions though. I'll have a look at the other options.

  • +10

True story. I was waiting for 1 tb ssds to be $199 or less before upgrading. I'm now waiting for 2 tb to be $199 or less. I don't know how I sleep at night.

    • +4

with an extra $199 in your account? ;)

    • +3

      When 2TB becomes $200:
“4TB has come down a lot, maybe I should just wait until it becomes $200”

      • +1

        Stop it!

  • I’m considering getting an Evo 500GB and QVO 1TB, anyone know if I’ll be eligible for Samsung Cashback for both drives if I order both in one order?

    • +1

I managed to do so in the past.

  • $135 for QVO 1TB now, $1 change would make all the difference?

  • +1

Any reason not to jump on the galax? Been looking for a 2070 super to drop into the 700 price for my new build. Reviews around the net say it's quiet and cool for a lesser known brand.

Alternative would be to pay 50 more for a 5700x red devil or something.

    • +1

I just bought it, 3000 series be damned… I have a QHD 144hz monitor coming, and i'd rather enjoy it, and the price is pretty damn good. If you listen to everyone always saying to wait till X gpu/cpu comes out, we'd all be waiting forever..

Not to mention, they are likely going to be overpriced and out of stock everywhere when they do release, for at least a month.

      • +1

Yeah the xiaomi? Me too. Jumped on the monitor now I need to build a PC around it haha. Are you starting from scratch ?

        • Nah, monitor from Kogan. I have a 1060 6GB and a 1080p60 monitor, and just finally wanting to move up to higher res and framerate. But the 1060 ain't gonna cut it haha

        • I was looking for the new Xiaomi 27" IPS Gaming monitor.
Where did you get it from and at what price?

          • @KeRRR: The 34 inch ultrawide was posted here a few days ago.

      • I'm with you on that. I have the money for the build now because I'm not travelling into work everyday and hockey is cancelled so I might as well do it.

I've bought everything for a 3900X build, just waiting on the Galax RTX 2070 Super and a vertical mount to be delivered.

I was going to move the Galax GTX 1660 Super from the current PC and replace with a cheap one for the kids but I realised I'll be spending a couple of hundred now for that then another $800ish in 6 months to upgrade the 1660.

I figure $800 now is better than over $1000 in total.

Also, after a bit of research I'm pretty sure due to Nvidia's binning the RTX 2070 Super is essentially what an RTX 2080 was at launch

  • Galax GeForce RTX 2080 Super EX Gamer 8GB GDDR6 RGB LED Graphics Card - $1069
    ORRRRRRR
    Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC 8G - $1159

    Worth the difference?
