Weird noise from a new computer. unplayable gaming experience:(

Hi guys,

I bought a prebuilt PC last month and I finally received it today yay!!!

I only have one problem at the moment. It's making a weird, annoying sound when I am playing a game, Valorant.

I've tried different earphones, headphone and external speakers but you can still hear the annoying noise.

Also tried turning in-game volume off as well as ALT tabbing from the game but it just won't go away :(

Has anyone experienced similar problem?

https://filebin.net/gxke6ymj0cl8wll4

It doesn't sound as bad when it's recorded.

Thanks :)

Where is the sound coming from? Fans? Speakers?

Sounds like interference from speakers cables. Check to see if the audio cables are crossing any electrical ones.

    • Its coming from whatever I plug in. Earphone, speaker, headphones etc

      • +5

Try reinstalling your audio and video driver. If that's not the issue then it could be a faulty audio chip or something is wrong with the grounding on your motherboard. Are you close to any wifi or RF emitting devices, like a phone?

      • +1

You might try a usb dac and see if you still get the noise. Borrow one from a friend. That can help isolate if the sound card is having interference

      • Try USB headphone, see if noise persists, if not, it's noise on audio line.

    • 100% agree here I think. If you are plugging it in the front try the back - but you probably have to move the cables.

In general, If you have unshielded cables they can get interference from nearby cables/devices.

      • I get horrible noise if i plug headphones into the front. cant be fixed

    • Have you got a separate sound card installed or just the onboard one? A lot of times inbuilt/onboard sound cards cop massive interference from nearby components. They just can't shield them that well when these are onboard. Not saying this is ALWAYS the case, but could be in yours. Search for your motherboard model see if others experience the same problem, because no driver update will fix that.

Time to open it up - best way to learn about computers :)
Could be as simple as a cable that's touching a fan. Opening it up will make it more obvious.

Not if you want to keep the warranty maybe.

  • +3

Does the noise only occur when you play that game? If so, try changing the in-game audio options.

    • -5

As soon as i get into the game, sounds become noticeable. even when I switch off all sound in game, I can hear this annoying sound

      • +32

        You forgot to switch accounts…
Also, as kahn said does the sound happen with other games or watching media?

        • +16

LOL, someone's begging for a banning.

          • +1

@kahn: There’s a slight chance he accidentally used his significant others account, right? Or not.

            • +9

              @mapax: New computer. Who dis?

            qkqnxogus
            In Penalty Box

      • Perhaps I should have been clearer. Could you confirm that the noise ONLY occurs when you are running that game and not in any other game/program?

If it's only in that game, try changing the in-game settings. If it happens elsewhere as well, then try the recommendations from other commenters.

        • I've only tried one game so far :( sound occurs even I have switched off all in-game sound though. However, Noise reduces if I change to lower graphics settings (While all in-game sound is turned off)

          • +2

@watupman: Goodness gracious - it's like like squeezing blood from a rock.

What is being asked is does this issue come from any other application - have you tried playing music or a youtube video or anything else aside from the game and if you haven't, then try - are you still having issues? This will let you rule out if it's application specific.

            • @Cunning Linguist: I am so sorry :( music and youtube does not reproduce the sound. it's only happens when I play games. e.g.valorant, LOL and etc. Seems like it's reproducing the sound when computer is under heavy load. I can hear the same sound when I open my pc while games are running but it is less noticeable than having my earphones or speakers connected to an audio jack located on top of PC.
If I connect my earphones to an audio jack at the back of PC, it DOES NOT making that noise at all.

Sounds like cable interference, can be caused by either a crappy motherboard or poor cable management.

If you're using the audio ports at the front of your desktop then try the ones at the back. The cables for the front ports are usually thin with barely any shielding at all, so if they're next to another cable, especially power cables, they can cause those sounds. Back ports don't have that issue, as they're built into the motherboard itself.

If that doesn't work then you might want to look into getting a dedicated sound card, as it's probably a fault with the motherboard. Either that or return it and hope it was just defective.

  • I think I maybe experienced the same issue that you're having. Everything was fine, nothing changed, and then all of a sudden there was a noise I could hear through my speakers/headphones that got louder as the load increased in my PC. I could literally open a game, run on ultra settings and the noise would be loud, then drop it down to low and the noise would nearly disappear.

I put it down to the built in sound on my motherboard dying. Ended up buying a cheap PCI-E soundcard, and when I ran audio through that the sound was gone.

    • How long have you had the computer for before the sound started happening? I literally got the computer today:(

      • Damn, yeah that's too soon for that type of thing to happen.

This was a couple upgrades ago, but I would've had that particular motherboard for about 2 years. It first happened when I got a new monitor and plugged it in for the first time. Something just happened and it was stuffed.

Maybe just contact the supplier and see what they can do.

Unfortunately I never found a fix for mine, just the soundcard workaround.

    • Sound does get little quiter as I reduce to lower settings in game. Also having no 'antianti aliasing' reduces the sound. What is going on :(

      • +4

Electrical interference from the GPU being picked up by the sound card

I would blame both the GPU and MB design.

You can get some really cheap usb sound cards <$2 on aliexpress, or a pcie sound card

  • there are programs that allow you to stream audio from your computer to your phone, from which you can listen, there is a slight delay maybe 30ms but good as a temp solution, i used to use one but i forgot the name of the program unfortunately

  • -3

lol sounds like you have dumpster parts…

  • -1

I've had a GPU (RX 580) that did exactly the same thing. As you've noticed, it only happens when the computer is under load, more importantly graphics load.
Depending on how that interference occurs, it can very hard to fix. Even an PCI-E sound card didn't fix it for me.

    Possible Solutions:
    * If you are hooking up your monitor through HDMI, try to connect into the headphones jack on the monitor and change your audio device.
    * A cheap USB sound card even the crappy $20 ones) hooked up after a usb extension cord (to get as far as possible from the interference) could work.
    * USB headphones.

    • usually when there's noise underload, it would mean that your power supply unit is struggling or not providing 'clean' power, or theres an underlying issue with your motherboard's soundchip.

      • Had exactly the same thought and changed the PSU, didn't work..

      • I've contacted Techfast so hopefully they will able to fix the problem. fingers crossed!

  • bluetooth headphones

    • Most motherboards don't come with wifi/Bluetooth

    new computer should have warranty?

    • I've contacted Techfast so hopefully they will able to fix the problem. Do you think they will replace the computer? this happened on Day 1.

  • If it's pre-built you might as well take advantage of things and contact the seller. It might be something very simple, but don't do anything yourself so they can't deny responsibility.

    • Yes. I haven't touched anything yet. I've emailed the seller :)
      Thanks Jobbi

  • You could buy a DAC/headphone amp. The USB connection to it kinda eliminates all that computer buzz stuff, it acts as a little buffer. I hate buzzing sounds. It turns me into a buzzkill because I have to kill the buzz to enjoy the speakers.

    • The digital -> analog conversion is occurring inside the USB device instead of on the MB.
Another alternative is any sort of wireless, bluetooth, or USB headphones

      • Yep. USB headphones have been working. I just hope that noise isn't coming from a faulty motherboard.
Thanks for your suggestion my friend :)

Get an Xbox and avoid all these problems.

    • +3

      Lol. right.

Ikr? I think he should be saying "Get a PS4 and die happy."

Sounds like coil whine from the GPU - usually nothing you can do about it, might be able to get replacement under warranty.

  • +3

Could be coil whine from the graphics card (was a bit hard to hear in the recording). I had a similar issue with a previous build.
I found it was worse in games that pumped out a very high frame rate. Try changing your settings in Valorant to lock the frame rate at your screens refresh rate (60 or 120fps). Maybe try 60 first and see if it helps.
Unfortunately this can be an issue between the PSU and GPU (sometimes mobo), which is a pain in the arse to test. Mine went away when I upgraded my PSU, which i had planned to do anyway.
Getting a replacement under warranty is hard, as it is difficult to record, and also may be specific to your setup.
If you have a friend with a decent setup, you could chuck your card in their PC and try and replicate the issue.
    Good luck.

If it's the B350 motherboard from Biostar, audio interference is an issue on those boards. Getting a ground loop noise isolator fixed the problem for me. They're about $5 from Aliexpress / eBay or $15 locally.

    • It's A320 from Biostar from noise problem disappears if I used a usb headphone or if I used a different audio jack that is located back of the computer.

    • Yep, give ground loop isolator a try. There might also be a USB to aux connector if you could give a go. Given that that seems to get rid of the issue

  • +2

Coil whine for sure if it increases w graphics load

    • if I used a usb headphone or if I used a different audio jack that is located back of the PC rather than top of the PC. Do you still think it's coil whine ?

      • +1

Nah coil whine come from the actual card itself, not usually thru headphones or anything, in my experience anyway.

      • Just saw from other later posts its purely from your headphone port? I dont think its coil whine anymore, but probably some low quality or unshielded cables internally.

  • It's pretty obvious that the OP has a faulty

    • I've contacted Techfast so hopefully they will able to fix the problem. Thanks so much for your insight

  • -2

The whatsapp video was great! Is that you in the video OP?

  • Coil whine from GPU, what GPU and power supply are you running?

    • If I use a usb headphone or if I used a different audio jack that is located back of the PC rather than top of the PC.
      CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3500X - GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 6GB - RAM: 8GB (1 x 8GB) 2666MHz DDR4 RAM - Motherboard: A320M - SSD: 240GB - PSU: 550W - Case: Leaper Air Mini RGB case
This is What I have :) Thanks so much for your help sir !

    Did you try restarting ?

  • +1

Is it only from the front headphone jack?
If it is only coming from the front jack, open the case and reroute the headphone cable away from all power cables.

Is it occurring when plugged into the rear speaker jack?
    Try a ground loop choke

Do you have multiple rear audio out's?
    Try a different rear out

Do you have configurable audio jacks (can you select input or output in the PC's included software?) Do you have auto config jacks?
Open up the software and play with audio port config

    Do you have combination jacks?
Buy and use a headphone/mic splitter

    • Thanks for your detailed explanation. You are a life saver!

It is only coming from the headphone jack that is coming from top of the PC. I'm not going to try anything inside of PC yet, until I hear from Techfast. I am the most computer newbie you will meet in your life haha.

Do you think my problem is solely coming a misaligned cable?

I am worried that noise is coming from a faulty parts that will slowly damage the computer. What do you think?

      • +1

From what you have said it is purely interference from internal cable routing.

If you have no idea, it is a good idea to wait.

Front I/O is connected via one cable that usually breaks out into four to nine individual black connectors. Each connector needs to connected to the correct pin on the mother board. These connectors are tiny and often poorly labeled. The pin's are very close and the layout usually changes with each motherboard maker and needs to be confirmed in the motherboard manual to ensure they are plugged in correctly.

This job usually takes me ten to twenty minutes, around a third of the build time, due to how finicky it is (as I don't build computer's that often).

It might just be moving this cable and jamming it away from other cables. If it is tangled, it might be easier to CAREFULLY undo the other cable (some internal connectors are stupidly fragile).

But your best bet is to contact the seller and wait for their instruction.

Thanks very much for your kind reply my friend. I'll let you know how I go with Techfast. We have been sending emails back and forth. Hopefully they will come up with a solution :) Thank you so much once again.

  • That sounds like coil whine from your graphic card, alot of the manufactors won't replace your graphic card just for coil whine, it's most likely something you'll just have to live with unfortunately

    • Thanks for your input. If I use USB headphone or use a different audio jack (which is located back of the PC), noise does not occur. I am worried that noise is coming from a problem of the parts that will slowly damage the computer. What do you think?

      • Could be a bad or junk audio cable from the motherboard to the front headphone jack. Can only tell if you change the case.

  • Probably coin whine. If it is, you need to determine whether it is from graphics card or power supply. I had a coin whine issue with a power supply. Had to change it to stop that. Also, it has nothing to do with the power supply power rating. My one with the issue was a 1200W power supply (with removable cables).

Imo your a noob and deserve to hear that noise.

    • Maybe I deserve to hear it. I will have to put more time into learning about computers. Thanks for your comment anyways :)

  • Is the link working ?

  • Sounds like something from a Hard Drive… you haven't mentioned what parts you have in your PC. If you have Water Cooling / Hard Drives Or Only SSD's…

Also whats with the Damn Whatsapp video….

  • If your jpg is a picture of you and your PC I don't think it's going to be covered by warranty!

    • hahah I laughed so hard. I didn't know other people can post pics/videos on that link :(

  • I'll throw another option there too:
Intel speedshift/speedstep (can't remember which one), might increase ripple noise that is picked up by audio circuit.

What I found helping in similar cases was enabling (or maybe it was disabling) v-sync. Quick and easy to try.

  • Could it be coil whining?

  • -1

Techfast built me a lemon too.
I think I've sorted it out but I might need to return it.

  • I had the same issue in my old house with onboard audio. Ended up buying a ground loop isolator. May have very slightly tapered off the higher frequencies but blocked the hum.

    • Thanks for your suggestion donnot. I really appreciate it

  • This happens with me every time i boot a game (only games no other applications do this) i click on the sound icon in the tray at the bottom right, i change what speaker is being used and then i change it straight back

    • Same here. looks like it's making the noise when computer is heavy load. hopefully it isn't damaging the computer :(

  • One question I can't see being asked, from where did you buy this PC?
