What an amazing price! Almost $200 extra for zero real world gain! Yes, this is a bargain for the MP600 2TB, but no you shouldn't buy it unless your goal is to have a big e-peen with those 4.5GB/s inconsequential sequential speeds. I don't think there's any workload that will need such bandwidth, even texture streaming. I'm giving it a positive vote in case there is that 1 in a million person who will benefit from this.

      Thanks, ordered.

Next gen games will need a PCIE 4 drive, consoles set the minimum requirements for games and they both have PCIE 4 drives, that being said, wait a few years for them to drop in price.

      • Those aren't the minimum requirements, the consoles are probably mostly just boasting their huge numbers, the fact that it is an SSD is enough. Think of how big a texture is, in the ones of megabytes right? Now the SSD has to read all those tiny files, random reads will fall well into the limitations of PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe and even get close to SATA. And remember when the PS4 and Xbox One launched with 8 cores? Well it took us this long to use 8 cores in the PC space.

        • +1

not entirely true. there are talks that AMD and nVidia are looking at adding NVMe directly onto their cards to allow for more assets to be stored to reduce texture pop-in. though i haven't heard much since

          • -1

@BigPeeper: Potentially, but if it were necessary then anyone with an older card is screwed no?

            • @Void: i suppose they would but the consoles already have games developed using this tech. but might only be a first party thing perhaps?

            • +2

@Void: I dont think you've quiet registered - previous gen console were completely different architectures/approaches to the software/hardware models employed by mainstream computing. That was why you could have an 8 core 'cell' cpu that made sense for playstation at the time that was barely matching quad core x86 CPUs.

This next generation of consoles are almost literally compact SFF computers in a shiney proprietary case. Any components they use are in direct competition the PC market. So if PS5 says they are using NVMe drives and NVMe accelerated GPUs, then by golly desktop computing needs to sort themselves out with some more affortable PCIE 4 devices.

I tihnk we can expect a big jump in performance in the next generation AMD/NVIDIA GPUs in anticipation of next gen consoles.

@Kill Joy: Well I found that the XBSX's raw I/O throughput is 2.4GB/s. If it truly is necessary then the Xbox is screwed. You are probably right about the 8 cores argument though.

I/O Throughput 2.4 GB/s (Raw), 4.8 GB/s (Compressed, with custom hardware decompression block)

                • +1

@Void: There is a simple answer for that - Microsoft is pushing to go cloud. I admit they are early to market (the network capaibilities arent really there yet for all users) but its going to pay off in the long run. This is likely to be one of the last console generations that's main focus is client side processing. I suspect next gen (after ps5) will be 90% cloud based.

Traditional gamers will stick with PS5 this generation, and this sentiment is already reflect months before release.

                  • @Kill Joy:

                    cloud based.

AAA what are we Australians with our terrible net going to do?!

AAA what are we Australians with our terrible net going to do?!

Blame the Liberal Party for butchering the NBN rollout.

In reality though, I suspect each console will provide a very basic 1080p/30hz performance offline mode, with 4k/60hz (or better) being the default online mode.

                      • @Kill Joy: Lets… not turn this into a toxic politics platform.

I'd think it'd be pretty bad if it couldn't function without internet.

                    • @Void: The same thing when xbox said you can watch TV on your xbox.

Not use it because you cant.

        • This console generation a 4 core/ 8 thread CPU was nessesary on PC to avoid a ton of stuttering. In alot of the more demanding games such as Assassins Creed Odyssey a 4 core/ 4 thread CPU is ill advised. The PS4 and Xbox One didn't have virtual cores, they were just 8 cores/ 8 threads. The PS5 is also 8 cores/ 8 threads so there won't be a massive leap in terms of CPU requirements as console games are always optimised for the lowest common denominator.

The lowest common denominator for SSDs in the next generation consoles are a 2.4GB/s SSD in the Xbox Series X. PCIE 3.0 drives will probably be fine, but older SATA SSD will likely have painful loading times. Current gen games are already exceeding 100GB, I dont think its a stretch of the imagination to think next gen games will approach 250-300GB later in the cycle.

I mean, if you want something that's fast enough to keep up with the next gen consoles this isn't fast enough anyway

    • Agreed. This item is mostly for bragging rights or to pamper yourself

…also why not save while pampering yourself? 😉

    • 💯 correct! But It's just newer technology and comes with a speed boost.

It's like saying If the average new car starts to come out with a 500 km/h top speed it's completely pointless. It'll get to 110 km/h with no effort at all.

    • You have to drop ounces to drop pounds

  • $576 for Firecuda 520 2TB on 29/07 @ Amazon US via AU(all gone). Cheers.

  • I get the impression that these memory companies are really just marketing companies. They use use standard commercial parts, use standard designs, and make cosmetic changes.

    • This is a phison reference design. Yes.

Just like the many reference GPU's for example

I just bought a Sabrent for almost $100 more than this.

Be careful telling people you bought a Gen4 drive though, only do it if you have thick skin. You'll get flamed hard because Linus or someone said it's not needed.

    • +1

Heh i already have pretty thick skin….need it for when i tell people my gaming pc has 16 cores and 64GB of ram. Dont even get them started on my custom loop :P

      • A 2080ti gets posted here for $1800 and everyone loves it even though a 5700xt plays most games 4k 60hz and to go over 60hz costs 2k for a monitor.

Spend an extra $100 on a 2T SSD for gen 4 storage and people go nuts. You don't NEED it they say… You don't need any of this though??

        • Mate, I bet that $1800 for the 2080Ti is gonna seem like a damn bargain for sure when my shiny new 3080Ti/3090 comes out :P

  • I don't think PCIE4.0 is any faster in games. Files transfer yes.

  • These babies rock! I currently have the 1TB version as I found it on a super special, it's absolutely worth every dollar. I've been watching this 2TB version on amazon for a few weeks, want to replace my intel and gigabyte drives, and have seen the price slowly drop below $600. Think I'm almost ready to buy it.

Where the drive really shines is games with heavy save load times like Civ VI, Battletech, or X4. Even my Gigabyte GP-GSM2NE3100TNTO can't match these MP600.

  • Is the speed worth it if I want to put all my favorite JAV on it, and I have an attention span of 15 seconds?
