Samsung Galaxy Nexus - Unlocked Pre-Order $799+ $19 Delivery from Kogan

55

After reading all the comparisons on the Kogan thread for the $499 Galaxy SII (http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/55588) comparing it to the unreleased Galaxy Nexus, I thought I would put up Kogans Galaxy Nexus Pre-order. No idea if this is a bargain as the retail prices have not been announced, but articles were speculating a $999 RRP.

Here the details from Kogan's site:

Participate in this pre-sale to reserve your Samsung Galaxy Nexus and be one of the first in the World to receive it.

The dispatch date above is marked 30th November, but it will very likely be a number of weeks before this. Orders will be processed on a first come, first served basis.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the flagship handset for Google's latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.
Incorporating all the amazing hardware specifications and features you have come to expect of Samsung's Android phones, and developed in collaboration with Google for the announcement and release of Android 4.0, this is a phone that has cutting edge style, blistering performance and Android's most anticipated smartphone release since Froyo.

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus Features:

Display

The 4.65" Super AMOLED Plus display seriously dwarfs the competition in terms of screen real estate. The display delivers magnificent colour and excellent readability with a HD (720 x 1280 pixels) display, giving a pixel density of ~316. Able to connect to all major Australian 3G network providers, take full advantage of the Galaxy's ability to stream high resolution video anywhere, any time.

Dual-core processor

The Cortex A9 is one of the fastest mobile microprocessors available, providing high-speed multitasking, quicker web rendering and a smoother user interface. Couple this processor with even the most intensive game
downloaded from the Android Market, and you won't miss a beat.

5MP Camera

The built-in digital camera includes auto-focus, excellent low light performance, and single-motion panoramic picture capturing. Added to this the zero shutter-lag feature will let you take your picture the precise moment you press the capture button.

Android 4.0

Ice Cream Sandwich brings an entire interface redesign to the Android smartphone world. The lock screen, widgets, notifications and multi-tasking has all been improved further upon Android Honeycomb, bringing more of the tablet experience to your smartphone, with some added extras.
Face Unlock

Utilising the Galaxy's front-facing camera, all you need to do it look at your phone to quickly unlock the screen.

Android Beam

The Galaxy Nexus comes with a built-in NFC (near field communication) chip. Not only does this give you access to Google's NFC enabled apps like Google Wallet, you can also share files and contacts with another NFC-enabled handset.

    • just to make a note, handtec's website says its 1080p display.. it's not. The resolution is 720p.

  • +1

    How's this a bargain?

It will never be sold at RRP $999 in AUS

This is more like a pre-order sale notice

and Handtec is cheaper by $120

  • -8

800 bucks and you still get a 5mp camera? my last 2 phones had 5mp, and even the apple 4s which is in a similar price bracket has a 8mp

    • +5
      • iphone's camera was ALWAYS crap..

y did he bother to test them out?

better if he tested nokia or sony instead

    • +2

The "5MP" sensor in the Nexus Galaxy is much better than the "8MP" sensor you are seeing in other phones today.

In fact "8MP" is such a joke I turn down my SGS2 settings to take 3MP photos which end up coming out better because they aren't just blown up.

      • Link? From the shots I saw on engadget the day of its announcement, the camera didn't seem too impressive.

EDIT: The link posted by Purt seems shifty.. Seem to be taken at different times.

        • Nah, it's not shifty, that website is run by the previous editor of Engadget. That website is temporary while he sets up his new tech website called The Verge.

      • So the ics is making all the difference? only software is better? if so… Ics will b on s2 ONE DAY

    • +4

      it's like u sayin D7000 (16.2mp) is better than D700 (12.1mp)

      • nice reference, but unfortunately not many people will get it.

      • I think the D700 is only better on darker shots as it is 2-3 stops better than the D7000. Daytime shots the quality would be on par with the D700 being a little better.

But i get what you mean. mp size =/= picture quality.

      • Unfortunately >90% of population still think MP is the only way to measure picture quality.

    • -3

i was comparing just one feature, i haven't seen a proper Nexus review yet, and yes i agree MP isn't everything, lens/cpu/software do make a difference to image quality

      • Going by those samples the Galaxy Nexus camera will better or equal of iPhone 4S camera. Win.

    • if you understand, it was a stupid commment.

  • -1

This is way too expensive. Wait for another 3-4 months and it will drop to 600++

    • +2

then you might aswell wait for the galaxy 3….

      • isnt this basically the galaxy 3?

    • +4

Or wait a couple years, it'll probably be even cheaper!

    • Wait a year and it will be in a cardboard stand near the checkout at Officeworks. Handtec will have it at the same time but a lot cheaper.

  • -1

In my search I could not find another Australian retailer with a lower price taking Pre-orders.

I am not a Kogan Fan, I don't like him, and I have never bought anything from them. But at least Kogan picks up faulty units and returns repairs at their cost and you get an Australian Warranty that is transferable if you sell the phone.

    • usually kogans phones are grey imports. So basically all you save is postage costs back to uk.

      • That is still less hassle than having to deal with a business in the UK.

      • I know they get their phone from Hong Kong i read it

Hope that might help people :)

Is S2 going to have icecream later?

    • +2

      Definitely. Legit or not.

  • How much better is this than S2?

    • +3

Pretty much the screen, gets ics first and will get alot of dev attention.

    • +4

Not currently worth the extra $300 in my opinion.

You are paying almost double for a 720p screen, NFC, Barometer and guaranteed ICS/Google support.

      • -1

depends on what you think, google promised 18months handset support. SGS2 already 6months in, so after 12months google doesnt care whether the new OS will be running on ur phone. This is google's baby, whenever google release updates, it gets it first unlike SGS2 where it has to wait till samsung put in their bloatwares and stuff.

hardware wise, this is alot better.

  • +2

nah not a bargain yet..hardly anyone know whats the real price on the net at the moment..sgs2 still hold up strong, so sgs3 will be my next one

  • I think the price will drop quite a bit, very very soon. I wouldn't pre-order just yet, unless you really want it ASAP.

  • -4

early adopter prices, watch this phone tumble down the price bin due to sgs 2 owning the current android market at an affordable price.

Google screwed up again by using the same GPU as the Nexus S. The 3D processing power hierarchy goes something like this,

    4S>SGS2>Sensation>SGS/Nexus S/Galaxy Nexus

    • Not everyone uses their phones for 3D games.

Don't forget this is also a developer 'baseline' phone.

It sets the 'new baseline' for app developers to work with and hardware manufacturers to 'match or better'.

If they set the bar too high then manufacturer's will get angry that the baseline is set too high and developers will create apps thinking their apps run smoothly on the Nexus but when they move them onto another phone they would find it runs slow.

Having a lower baseline for the developer phones is better for the performance/speed/smoothness of future apps for all the other phones out there.

      • yea I know, I'm just stressing the part where the 3D processing power is the same as the Nexus S and Galaxy S, Apple don't even screw customers this way anymore. I think there were some rumors that the powervr sgx 540 on the galaxy nexus will be overclocked, hope this is true.

        1. If you think GPU is only meant for games, you are clearly wrong.
        2. Android market still attracts a lot of PC enthusiast, those that love to do overclocking and benchmarks and know what to expect in terms of hardware value.
          1. The GPU in the Galaxy Nexus is more than enough for non-gaming purposes though.
          2. Agreed - but as I said, if Google set the bar too high for the 'developer phone' then all the non-Google phones will seem poor - and that will make everyone else angry at El Goog :-)

It is a balancing act between not setting the bar too high, while still having a great phone.

I need to see more information, people are claiming that this isn't correct. I'll post back when I find the benchmark test.

      • Big turn off, if these figures are correct.
Will wait for HTC to see what new phone they'll come up with.

        • the galaxy s3 will counter 4S, most probably using the same powervr chip from 4S or Mali 604. The Mali 604 was announced last year and everyone expected it to be in sgs 2 but they snuck in the older Mali 400 instead.

HTC is a staunched qualcomm follower, they will need to pump out a new Adreno chip

The cortex A9 architecture has been used countless times this year and the next step is cortex A15, Nvidia will want to compete tightly with their Tegra 3. I can picture LG being the first to a Tegra 3 handset

        • Don't forget the Galaxy Nexus is pushing a lot more pixels than any of the other phones.

It is better to compare it to the new high definition phones like HTC Vigor/Rezound and the LG Eye.

          Pixels pushed:

          Galaxy Nexus: 1196x720: 861,120 pixels
          S2: 800x480: 384,000 pixels
          Nexus S: 800x480: 384,000 pixels
          iPhone 4S: 640x960: 614,400 pixels

If the Nexus was pushing 384k pixels it would probably be giving some better stats.

  • -7

The price seems to be way higher than other phones…

    • umm.. apples and oranges. They're not all the same

      • If so we cannot make comparisons anymore. The iPhones would not be compared with any other products because they are somehow different.

    • -1

There are no other phones on a comparative scale!

      • +1

        Galaxy S2 is comparable

  • +1

Can't wait for the deployment of ICS to my Nexus S…
Apperantly Nexus S (the other 'baby' of Google) will be getting ICS after Prime

  • +2

not a bargain, RRP is not even yet known

  • is it out in NOV?

  • +1

wow, this is so cheap.. not.

  • +3

I'd wait for more details and NOT rush the pre-order from Kogan. Since it's a grey import it will most likely be a HSDPA handset…..Australia will probably get a 4G LTE version for use on the 4G network.

    http://www.current.com.au/2011/10/20/article/Beware-of-Kogan…

    • Agree with this, those on telstra who want to take advantage of the eventual 4g rollout should wait for the LTE version.
      or
Those that don't need the LTE version can get the HSDPA version for significantly cheaper from Clove or handtec

      Clove: http://www.clove.co.uk/samsung-galaxy-nexus-16gb

      Handtec: http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/5527/samsung-galaxy-nex…

      No deal sorry.

    • +1

I've read that the lte version of this phone is only for the 700MHz band (Verizon). Not the 1800MHz lte that Telstra are going with.

Anyway, lte sucks battery at the moment, so you're better off without it until the tech matures a bit.

  • Be mindful this price is only for 16gb as well, which to me is useless, I require the 32 version which will probably be close to $999

  • Latest new phone from "X"….yeah
Bringing it to the market …yeah
    Only person in the market….yeah
    Can dictate a price……….yeah
    Bargain………………….nope
    No deal

  • +1

Can someone tell me whats with all the hype on this phone? It looks pretty similar to the SG S2 spec wise other than the ICS (which the S2 will get sooner or later).

    • mainly, it'll be the first ICS based phone.
Also, it'll be the first with such a high res screen.

  • This just seems to lack a couple of 'upgrades'

Assumedly the S3 will come out in 3 months time and match/beat it in the following ways:

    • Microsd slot
    • Nicer form factor (I'm of the opinion the nexus has too much wasted space above and below the screen and to me the S2 just looks sexier as a result)
    • Better camera (I know a good 5MP is better than a bad 8mp camera by the way, but it's probably a bad 5MP versus a bad 8MP)

I think if I bought this phone I would have buyers remorse too soon.

    • If you want the best android - you get the android google gives you. Also, the latest will only ever last for 1 year. Because the next best thing from Google comes out.
The only android phone you should ever consider, is a the google handset android. Fastest firmware update releases, least amount of carrier & brand add-ons & UI skinning.

I'm an ex galaxy user, & that is my regret, thinking someone could make a better android than Google's handset.

    • have a look at the leak, no idea if its fake or true,

      http://www.geek.com/articles/mobile/samsung-galaxy-s3-specs-…

looks genuine to me except for the spelling error, that was very korean of them :D

      some highlights,
2 GB RAM (geez, that's enough to run windows 7)
12 MP camera (oh why not add more megapixels for the heck of it)
unknown but much faster GPU (should be fun)

  • not bargain i dont like them adn other better pricing will come when other shops get them i love my S2 fone so much this will be better so Im def gonna buy it but not at this price I can promise it

  • errr.. this is not a iphone 5 …. how is over 800 dollars make this a bargain?

    • because its the flagship Android phone. its got an extra $800 of the latest stuff that actually counts (4.56" screen, NFC, GPU/HDMI, RAM) rather than making it cost over $800 purely for brand's sake (like Apple does.. Siri? Lol..)
