  • Link is dead? what model is the tomtom gps? more info?

  • Clearing out old stock.

No, DSE just placed an order for 9400 of these units NSW wide!

  • I have one, its ok - but has really turned me off TomTom for any future purchases though (my previous/first GPS was also TomTom, and it was a bit bad, so thought i would give them another go… wont fall for it for a 3rd time!!)

    • I have a reasonably new TomTom and even from day one - the maps are out of date.
Updated everything as much as possible using laptop to no avail… still didn't recognize the massive changes to the freeway exits/entries near my house. Quite embarrassing really. Never again

Your fault when TomTom offered 30-60 days of FREE map updates for all newly purchased products.

Did it ever occur to you that people get frustrated when they download the latest map update and it still does not show changes that happened years ago? Mind you in Spain they tried to be a bit ahead of things and frequently sent us to roads that were not even built yet…

        • In 30 days time you usually get the exactly the same quarterly (90 day) update file as you did when you purchased. i.e. no updates at all!

  • It's a good deal anyway, I would grab one. My first GPS was Tomtom which brought me much convenience. Second/Current one is Garmin, works fine but the UI is not user friendly. So would go back to Tomtom again.

$50 cheaper than the last time… *tempted

If someone is after a cheap navigation device (generally), grab a cheap Android phone (like the Huawei 8300) and for $50 (and a phone plan /w data), you are on the road (always updated maps).

Not to take anything away from the deal however, just more of a FYI.

    • And you have 2 hour navigation max. One of the best function in gps is speed cam alert and you won't get that. Also in countryside you can't access map since it is online maps. For me phone gps is helpful but can't replace real gps

What I want is real gps with Google support. That would be nice since search function in gps unit is sucks

      • For me phone gps is helpful but can't replace real gps

Agreed, but not for the reasons you listed.

And you have 2 hour navigation max.

Use a car charger, just as you would a GPS unit.

One of the best function in gps is speed cam alert and you won't get that.

        Trapster.

Also in countryside you can't access map since it is online maps.

        Google Maps caching.

Pricing is the real issue. The Huawei 8300 won't cut it, and can't compare to a 5" touch screen. A decently sized Android phone (tablet?) will cost about the same as this GPS unit. Add to that a commercial windscreen mount (since it's illegal in most states to use your phone as a GPS unit otherwise) and a data plan, and it's far from feasible.

  • Bought one of these last time they were cheap at Dickies and think its great, the larger screen really does help with the onscreen keyboard

  • Saw it at Myer for the same price here not long ago. Was tempted but ultimately decided to just get the software for my iPhone. Paying for map updates was a bit of a turnoff and I'd probbaly pay more and just go Garmin while they have the lifetime map offer.

    • Life time maps mean certain limited number of maps as defined by manufacturer.
Please do not consider and confuse it as valid for your lifetime.

      • I know it isn't my lifetime. But it gives you them for the lifetime of the device which is in many peoples cases a few years. At the price the big companies charge for maps I'd rather pay a bit more and take advantage of such an offer.

Put it this way, I'd probably want my maps to be up to date so I can get an older model Tom Tom or spend $300 on a newer higher end Garmin currently and probably end up paying the same amount over 12 months and less in the long run.

  • I bought it in last run about 6 months ago and very happy with this unit. Screen is large enough for a good view.

Only draw back i can tell you is there is no expension slot and its builtin memory is 2 GB, which means you will have hard time to put huge maps. Though i was able to install a dlightly smaller version of american maps with much issue.

Other than that its a fantastic GPS unit works great and does its job.

  • Guys, If you are keen in buying this I'd recommend do a quick research on the web. I have had friends using the TomTom last 5" model DSE had on a sale and they are not happy with it.
I use the ALDI brand, free updates from them and has been working like a charm. Tomtom used to be good but they dropped the ball big time with the past few releases.

    • Can you pls privide more details? What exactly they are not happy about? Ta

      • Map errors and navigation errors - Basically even though you tell it to find the shortest route it didnt and this was tested in the metro area. No issues with the chips or processor from what I saw I thought it could be due to map issues. Also they didnt have the latest maps loaded on them when they sold the last batch. And when ppl tried to update the website asked them to pay $99 or something…
As I said this is the feedback from the last batch of 5" TOMTOM. Things might have changed since then, only researching on this particular model and the map version they are offering will tell you the current status.

Sorry this is not a good deal. I thought ozbargain'ers were privy to DSE high-low pricing. Basically inflate the ticket price of a 4 year old GPS and then sell it at what its really worth to show a misleading save message - to suck in the general public to think they got a great deal.

This is like the 6th time they have promoted this deal with the same 1/2 price message.
