is this as salty as SPAM? personally I like SPAM but just too salty (even the reduced sodium ones)…

    • +3

I agree SPAM is way too salty, I won't buy them again no matter the price.

      • +6

Pffft babies….I want more salt and a cheese infused option!

        • +2

I need salty food to help my brain function correctly.

        • You know they actually do make a Spam with cheese version!

          https://www.spam-ph.com/varieties/spam-with-cheese

Can't really taste the cheese but it's even saltier than the normal version, you might like it

          • @underscore: OMG - now I know what its like when doves cry…..

          • @underscore: even saltier than the normal version

Funny typo on that page indicates that it's more than 100% sodium haha

            Serving Size: 2oz (56g); Servings: 6
            Calories: 170 ; Total Fat: 15g ; Saturated Fat: 6 ; Cholesterol: 40mg ; Sodium: 720g ; Total Carbohydrates: 1g >; Dietary Fiber: 0g ; Sugars: 1g ; Protein: 8g ;

So, in a can of 336g (6 servings of 56g each), there's 720g of sodium lol

      • I find this a bit dry for my liking, spam otherwise are much salty but it is not as dry as this.

        • Really - its 26% fat!

    • 50% less version is tolerable… Sodium is 1018mg for SPAM normal, and 994mg for this. Difference negligible

Should have bought more during the last SPAM 50% sale in March

    reported for spam

      reported for counterfeit spam

      • Agreed. The song just wouldn't sound the same if the Vikings sang "Plumrose" instead.

        • man that has aged badly…nostaliga still got a grin out of it though

Anyone care to review? I love SPAM, will I love this?

Spam and egg with rice … yummy.

    • +4

A bit less salty from regular spam.. my daughter couldn't tell the difference.. she still called it spam when we had it.. i'll try to buy at 3 or 4.. we make spam musubis at least twice a month..

      • I'll buy a few then, thanks.

      • +2

        This vs SPAM:
        2.4% less salty
        8% less protein
        3.5% more fat
        Contains Potassium Chloride
        Contains Sodium Nitrite (Colour Fixative)

        • +1

So its like SPAM but better!

    • +2

You do realise that Spam stands for SPiced hAM?

      • +2

        I didn't, now I do.

        Learn things everything, thank you.

      • +1

That's what it's rumoured to stand for. The people who originated the name are weirdly coy about it so it does not officially mean spiced ham.

    • This product has a more 'real' meat taste and texture vs. Spam.

      I'm sure you'll like it

    stock up for lock down

    • yup thats what im doing. Sydney lockdown imminent.

    • +1

Don't bother. Melbourne supermarkets, although empty at first, are still getting lots of stock.

Waiting for a joke from JV

  • I dont think it matters much but the on the tin, it states that it is "Produced in the USA" while on the web page it says "Made in Netherlands" either way it is good value @1/2 price :D

    • Well spotted.

You'll get a gold star when playing "where is wally?" :D

    • The Frankfurt cocktails are made in Netherlands. The rest are from the USA I think. Can't see the labels for hot dogs.

    Who eats this crap?!

  • +2

I haven't tried this yet although I have a few cans but I find their leg ham a lot nicer than spam. There's chunks of meat and it's not as salty

  • Yo OP, I ain't interested in fake SPAM.

  • Can someone please explain what this or spam actually is? I've never tried it, how does it compare to ham off the bone?

    • +17

Honestly, it is better if you don't know.

    • +2

      Abattoir floor sweepings!

      • chicken crests

    • Pork meat, little bit of ham, salt, water, potato starch and preservatives

Into a tin can, add heat and pressure to kill everything inside and outside

Label and profit since the WW2 with very little changes

      Fav food in Hawaii

      • +1

Mmm, Spam Musubi. Worth going back to Hawaii just for that! ;)

    • pork shoulder

    • It's made of the parts of ham off the bone you usually throw away.

    • +2

It's made from the snouts and ears that chew toys and frankfurters reject.

    • +2

Spam compares to ham off the bone much the same was as sausages compare to steak.

      • Perfect analogy!

  • If you like cheap SPAM, check out Aldi's version, tastes the same to me. Just don't accidentally grab the corned beef next to it - its horrific!

    • Any salt reduced version at Aldi?

    • +1

Brazilian corned beef is amazing if you don't like how your pee smells because it'll smell so much worse after it that you'll be happy to go back to original.

  • +4

Yeah nah, I'll wait half priced Spam.

    • Nice username!

  • Asian spam is way better. It got very little salt because its served with fish/soy sauce. Also there're so many variants: spam made from beef, pork, chicken, fat added, pork ear added, mushroom added, cinnamon (spice) added … Time to ditch canned food don't you think ?

    http://www.lionbrand.com.au/blog/what-is-cha-lua-vietnamese-…

    • you are comparing asian fresh hams to canned. Different price range.

  • +1

no stock at all my local woolies

  • I've been looking for an alternative to shingles. Do you have any recommends?

  • I only eat steamed hams.
