NBN 100 Unlimited Data $80/Month (For the First 12 Months, Min Cost $960), $85/Month Thereafter @ Dodo

130

Got an email about this new pricing and just changed my plan from the old NBN100 one.

$80/Month is for the first 12 months, then it's back to $85/Month. Minimum cost $960 (12 Month Term)

82Mbps average sampled evening speed
(Based on the ACCC Measuring Broadband Australia Report)

I'm getting ~80Mbps as claimed most of time on HFC. I rarely have drop-outs, maybe due to my cabling and area. YMMV.

Note: I'm using a TP-Link Archer C5400. The included Huawei HG659 is sub-par.

  • Are they Vocus resellers? I hope so.

    Im extremely happy with Tangerine, and would recommend them to anyone;

But that 80mbps for $5 more, over my 50mbps isnt to be sneezed at…hmmmm.

    • Dodo is owned by Vocus Group

      • Hold on, OWNED by?

Does that mean they're likely to have the highest CVC available on that network?

    • +2

I'm switching to Launtel at the end of the month from my 12 months on Belong using there early adopter code, had Tangerine before Belong and yeah for the 6 months i had them they were fine, launtel with the promo works out to be $$2.28 a day for 50/20 or $3.00 a day for 100/40, and you can switch easily if you only need 100/40 for a few days or whatever, no contract either

      • +1

Why switch away from Belong? Were you unhappy? Or just because at Launtel you can switch to 100/40 for a few days?

For 50/20 it works out pretty much the same as Launtel if you compare the monthly price and Belong is cheaper if you go on 12 months contract.

        • +3

nah they are fine, but i think you answered your own question don't want to go on another 12 month contract and i like the option of being able to switch speeds for a few days if needed, plus Belong will not offer 100/40 on my FTTN connection even though i have had it before with other RSP's

        • You can switch to Launtel 100/40 for a few minutes if you wanted, then switch back to 25/5 if you wanted then go back to 50/20 then back to 100/40 all in the space of a day and only pay for the 100/40 speed rate for the day.

          No joke I've tried this.

          • @Turd: Haha I bet the NOC was like yeah thanks buddy glad your having fun messing with ur line speed

          • @Turd: I wouldn’t call it a few minutes. At least not on FTTC or FTTN. FTTP probably is as some of the lines are NBN direct. Vocus (owns dodo) seems to be able to screw anything up can’t recommend them (Vocus) enough for Dodo definition.

  • NBN 100 but @ 80 MB.. sounds like a gimmick already..

    • +1

The 100/20 bundle is priced at $58 per month wholesale starting with 3.75Mbps bundled CVC capacity and increasing to 4Mbps by May 2021.

You need to add 10% GST on that for the retail side.

If you go for AVC only then the cost is $37 / month with CVC at 1Mbs for $17.50 / month, so the RSP is much better off getting a bundled service.

A 10 Gbps NNI costs $400 / month and a CVC can only support max 4000 AVC.

You're looking at a minimum of $5000 to get a 10Gbps NNI activated ($35K if you want ER optics)

The Govt needs to write down the whole project so the IRR required is just to pay off the debt from bond holders.

They'll need to do it soon, or the 3 mobile networks will target their customer bases on FTTN with low sync speeds and offer them home 5G services.

      • And then they can sell the whole thing to Telstra :D

        • +1

I think they already tried and Telstra said no

  • On HFC with the 15% over provisioning you should be getting higher than 80Mbps?
I'm getting 105 ish with Telstra.

    • I don't think vocus have enabled (or aren't passing on) the over provisioning.

      • And considering their rock solid speed even in peak times, along with cheapest resellers; im actually not gonna complain.

        • Rock solid at what speed exactly?
Rock solid to international links as well?

          • +2

@stratbargain: Rock solid as in their fibre links are rock solid With little to no light running through them.

Vocus NBN 100 is always available for $79 at Mate/Barefoot, with Aussie support.

  • I need some help, i’m with superloop on the 100/20 500gb deal for $79.95/month. I never download over 500gb yet if i’m watching videos on youtube etc they take forever to load. Why does it take so long to watch 3/4 minute videos? Typical evening speed is supposed to be 90mbps but i don’t think it’s anywhere near that at the moment. How can i test my mbps speed? Are there any cheaper or better deals that i can switch to or am i better off staying with superloop? Any help that can help me get my internet faster would be much appreciated. Thanks.

In terms of fault finding your connection. I would call your superloop technical support and let them know about your issues.

      • Download 41.54mbps and ping 6ms this was tested now this morning i doubt it would be higher in the evening i’d say about the same

        • +1

6ms is acceptable depending on how far you were from the test server. It seems it is a throughput issue. Which could be isp or it could be your wifi strength is low. However 40mbps is more than enough to watch youtube as that would use less than 10mbps. On a second note when I was looking to ISPs awhile back because I moved I did look into superloop and it seemed they had good local speeds (Australia) but poor international at about what you are experiencing. I recommend leaptel as they guarantee their speeds in most cases.

          • @jiberz: Definitely not my experience having previously been with Superloop until I moved to a new place.

SL have a very good reputation for their international link speed. I did some research on them last year before I joined.

Have a read through this Whirlpool thread about different ISP international speeds
            https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2796647

        • @Golly1153 What NBN technology are you on? E.g. FTTN, HFC, FTTC, or FTTP
You might need to check your line sync speeds first if you're on FTTN you can check the modem yourself. Unfortunately if you're on FTTN then you're at the mercy of the quality of your copper lines.

          • @JonSnow: &JonSnow i’m not sure which nbn technology i’m on and i’m not sure how to check

            • @Golly1153: You can check your NBN technology by using NBN's own website:

              https://www.nbnco.com.au/

Type your address in and you will see what type of technology is used in your connection.

If you're on FTTN, it could be the co-existence on the access line that makes it slower than it could be. Check it on MyRepublic's website:

              https://myrepublic.net/au/

        • Your WiFi speed and bandwidth also play a big part

    • Is it the same on different devices, on wifi and ethernet? Also yeah call your isp.

      • It’s the same using wifi on phone and tablet

    • Try different videos , a popular video will have closer servers so quicker to load, a less watched video or new video going to have some issues loading

    • I had a similar problem a while back. I changed to google DNS on my router and it worked a treat.

    • where are you located and do you know what type of NBN FTTC/HFC/FTTP? I'd say call superloop as I would hope with over provisioning your speed would be better so it could be a wifi/router/device issue and likely easily solved however with 41mbp/s you shouldn't have any issues

    • +2

Hey dude; can you pop into your modem/router and find where it says "dns"; its probably set to automatic.

      Change it to;

      1.1.1.1 primary (cloudflare)

      8.8.8.8 secondary (google)

This will ensure that the first 'hop' on your internet connection is the fastest route to what you've just asked it for.

A Lot of isp's use sneaky routing to ensure their network doesnt get swamped with streaming udp packets; but you can fix that.

You also get added privacy, because your ISP cant use that simple way of logging the websites you view anymore (they still can, its just now harder, and they likely wont).

    • I have similar problem with Superloop few days ago. Reboot the modem, and router, seems solving the problems.

  • Half considered it but they don't have any competitive home phone plans or bundles.

    • Checked Dodo website and there is an option for a free VOIP plan.
However, they do not give out your SIP details so will be stuck using supplied Dodo modem/router.
Like most they charge extra for 131 and 1300 numbers.

      • A quick search on Google for 'whirlpool dodo voip' yielded what you're likely looking for.

        • My comment was referring to VOIP username and password for NBN connections.
Most ISPs will not give this information to end users anymore, AussieBB and Exetel are examples that do.

      • Usually, if you do a modem backup, and open the backup file in notepad, the settings are readable.

    • Why do you need a home phone plan? There's so many mobile plans offering international calls on top of unlimited local.

      • +1

a lot of elderly can't use mobiles

      • +1

Alarm system, medical alert system, backup when the mobile system goes down, no reception, fear of 'radiation', existing business, etc etc.

      • Housemate uses it for elderly.

  • This seems so cheap. Am I missing something? I am on Telstra at the moment. If I switch to Dodo, I will still be getting similar speak as Telstra right because the infrustructure is the same.

    • +2

Dodo buy less NBNCo CVC though focus thus can not compare to the likes of Aussie Broadband or super loop or Launtel.

      I won't even recommend Telstra.

      • Thank you. There used to be a minimum speed guarantee last time when I was shopping around. This is no longer a thing?

        • Thats still a thing.

          83mbps they say.

      • Wow they buy less than ABB? Thats shocking. Abb couldnt provide anything close to their promise during peak.
Switching to exetel doubled our speed.

        You clearly have some inside information to be speaking that confidently;
How much cvc does each allocate per customer?

        • Each individual case is different.

What NBN technology are you on?

You switched from ABB to exetel and experienced double the speed? Speed as in to a website or line sync speed? Or?

          • @Turd: Peak hour speed to local AND international resources.

Especially if the host was AWS.

One property is on HFC, and one is on FTTN.

The FTTN link saw the full improvement.
At the other property, it was only about 20%, but thats enough for me to care about.

    • Telstra charge extra $20 or more per month that competition for equal or often worse service. And lock you into contracts. Try someone with no contracts and see how you go. Switching can only take a few mins (depending on NBN tech you have accces to) and is super easy! Just gotta make sure your modem will still work

    dodo, dodo…internet that dies!

    • +1

The dodo has since become a fixture in popular culture, often as a symbol of extinction and obsolescence.

      • Yes yes, I'm also well aware the Dodo bird is an extinct bird that can't fly.

    • "For 9.90 per month, connect yourself with dodo"

Used to have them exclusively for dialup; not a single complaint, honestly.
And nobody came close to the 9.90 a month.

      • their dial up was ok, but their ADSL was trash I heard

  • Note that these new 100 plans are what nbn call home fast which is 100/20

You'll likley find all the new cheaper 100 plans are the same.

  • Likes of Mate offer 100 plan for $80 with no contract. Why would anyone go for this?

    • I've heard rumors that not everybody buys everything solely on price so there must be some other factors at play here such as linespeed, company reputation and expected levels of customer support.

      • +1

This is Dodo we are talking about.
Mate has pretty good reputation as far as I can tell. Their customer service was top notch so far for me.

  • I am with ABB and have a 50/20 Mbps unlimited FTTB connection with frequent drop-outs at night when watching SBS On Demand. Is this normal in a building with approximately 120 apartments, or will a change of ISP improve my streaming experience?

    • +1

could be any number of things I'd start by looking at the router and log files but ABB tech service is v good so give them a call and see what they can do to help you find / resolve the issue. Are you using 2.4g wifi? could be as simple as the channel you are using or is the router showing the internet as dropping out?

      • Thank you Irishness. I will do some troubleshooting as you have suggested.

        • +1

also head over to whirlpool and the ABB forum for plenty of free advice, your issue is common and I'm sure can be fixed
