Prices of these coming down so fast. I bought it for around 300 😫

  • Can you use this as a boot drive? Any one got experience with this on a Mac?

    • Would like to know this too, just got quoted $480 to replace my fusion drive with a 1tb Samsung SSD on my 27" 5k iMac.

      • Me too.
And I got my iMac with two OS.
The Windows OS is mostly for the games.
Not sure whether I can use the external ssd drive as the boot drive for both OS.
I heard this option could possibly boost performance.

      • LOL me too! Exactly the same!

Not a Mac expert but you can (generally) boot from USB so can't see why not.

    • You can use any usb drive as your boot drive. I previously had a 1tb Samsung EVO in an enclosure as my main drive and it was fine. Just remember to change the start up to point to the usb drive when you're done. Feel free to ask any more questions :)

    • Yes, it should work. After installing the OS, just hold Alt/Option key until the boot disk selection screen appears during machine start up.

    • I'm using a USB drive as a boot drive with iMac.

You need to download the OS install, for example from the app store or dosdude1 installer. Format your USB drive for Mac, I would recommend APFS. Then when you run the installer you need to select the USB drive as the target. Let it install and when it finishes make sure that the start up target is the USB drive with the new operating system. Done.

When you download the installer make sure you get the same version or newer installer, otherwise the installer won't run. Downgrading is a bit more difficult. Dosdude1 installers are helpful for downgrading.

  • Think i will just get one installed can claim gst back and tax write off, even with 24gb ram it's slower than my new 2020 i3 base macbook air.
