    Personally I'd use the free ATO one so you don't need to trust a $1 app with your data, or being correct. If you have a significant tax claim, rental property etc, go use an accountant.

    • +1

      Yep free ATO one works perfectly fine.

        I just use Excel…

        • Hey JV,

          Excel is great tool.

          The export function in TaxFox auto-siummarises your deductions as well as zips up your receipts for easy access or to send to your accountant.

          The TaxFox app gives you job-specific deduction suggestions and shows you the average of how much other people in your occupation are claiming - I 'm quite certain Excel does not have this function.

          You are welcome to use the App or have the freedom to use your spreadsheet to track your expenses and work from home hours.

          Cheers =)

      Totally agreed. Been using the ATO free as its has improved so much better and easier to use

  • Hey Incipient,

    You aree absolutely correct that you can lodge your tax returns with the ATO through myGov. The TaxFox app is not a tax return lodgement app. For complex tax returns we do suggest people to see a registered tax agent. Many of our customers also use accountants.

    Our mobile app contains publicly available data provided by the ATO. The app is a tool to help maximise your tax refund and the Promo codes are legitimate.

    There are 3 core fundamentals of the App
    1. Adherence to ATO compliance and rules
    2. User data security to ensure receipts and data is securely stored and can be accessed even when changing devices
    3. Users privacy

    The ATO mobile app is called MyDeductions and it certainly allows you to store basic information. There are shortcomings of the ATO app reported by users. These were taken into account to build an app, particularly to help people with their work from home tax deductions.

    The TaxFox will also show the average claimed for your job.

    The app is free to download and the upgrade plans are for those who want to store more receipts and record more work from home hours - which in turn would help them claim more deductions.

    One of the goals of the app is to make information that is relevant to a users job readily available at all times so they can be more engaged with their deductions and make sure they are claiming everything they are entitled to.

    Thanks for your comment!

    Cheers =)

      incipient & I are not talking about lodging through myGov…there is a free ATO app to add expenses, deductions, calculate mileage, add pics of receipts etc during the year. Then you can lodge direct from that through myGov at the end of the year.

      • -1

        Hey Blackjack,

        Thanks for clarifying ^

        I believe you are referring to the ATO app myDeductions feature. (Please correct me if I am wrong)

        This is their app store link:
        https://apps.apple.com/au/app/australian-taxation-office/id6…

        One of the main reasons we developed this app was due to a lot of our customers experiencing various issues with recording expenses - you can see them easily in the comments on the link.

        Cheers =)

    What ?????????

    • You pay $83 for an accounting program on your computer.

      • -1

        Hey dtc,

        It's actually a personal mobile app to help you get more tax dollars back. The more deduction you claim the more potential increase in tax refunds.

        Not too dissimilar to a finance app which helps you save money.

        The intended end result is more money for users.

        Cheers =)

      Hey JV,

      the Smart premium upgrade is normally $83.99 per year which works out to be ~$7/month.

      The app aims to help you reduce your tax bill and get more tax back. WE learned that many Aussies miss out on hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars of tax-deductible items every year.

      This is an app to help you claim everything you are eligible for and to make sure you to forget to claim for a receipt - for example a $50 donation you made a while ago but might have misplaced the receipt so you missed out.

      with more people working from home, the app helps you keep track of the number of hours to easily claim.

      Cheers =)

        That just requires basic bookkeeping, not an app.

        If you don't enter it in the app, you won't get the tax deduction anyway…

        • +1

          Hey Jv,

          That's a good point. Sounds like you are well on top of your book keeping.

          Unfortunately, the data shows that most Aussies do miss out.

          Here are the stats for FY 2017-18

          • 14.3M Australians lodged a tax return
          • $11.2B was donated by individuals and only ($3.75B) was claimed as a tax deduction
          • $7.45B in tax deductions for donations were not claimed.
          • 67% of individuals are not claiming deductions for donations they made

          The app can be used any time to take a photo, unload an image or a document on the go which reduces the chance of forgetting missing out. You are also motivated to input more deduction receipts to show your estimated refund amount go up.

          Cheers =)

            That's a good point. Sounds like you are well on top of your book keeping.

            regardless of whether you just hold on to your receipts, use a spreadsheet, a bookkeeper or use an app, if you don't have the discipline to keep records, the app isn't going to make any difference.

            • +1

              @jv: Hey JV,

              I like your challenger mindset.

              Sometimes a little help goes a long way to build discipline or habits.

              You mentioned: "…the app isn't going to make any difference"

              Quick reminder that it is not only a receipt-storing app. There are many other ways to use the app in helping to increase your tax refund.

              Cheers =)

                Sometimes a little help goes a long way to build discipline or habits.

                Nope, an app isn't going to change bad habits.

                That is why there are so many bookkeepers around.

                • @jv: Hey JV,

                  Thanks for your opinion on bad habits.

                  There is a significant amount of scientific research, and meta research which conclude tools can be utilised to improve habit formation.

                  Convenience of the tool usually helps too - for example, you use excel instead of a physical pen and pad.

                  Regarding book keepers, they are usually used by businesses or sole traders. The TaxFox app is designed to help individual income tax payers - it's an area that has been neglected.

                  Cheers =)

    Bad habits & Auto renewal @ full price.. sounds like a match made in heaven

  • -1

    Hey randomusername2017,

    Sounds like you may have had a bad experience with auto-renewals in the past.

    The good news is that the TaxFox helps you create GOOD habits to be able to get more out of your tax refund.

    Auto renewals for subscription plans for apps are a standard feature with apps - you have the option of cancelling if you don't see see value over time. If you are uncomfortable with this then you can simply use the free plan.

    The TaxFox app is free for recording up to 12 receipts so you certainly don't have any obligation to take up the premium plan.

    You will also receive multiple renewal emails close to your 1 year renewal date to serve as a reminder if you do not wish to renew.

    Cheers =)

    Is the $0.99 a legitimate expense for a taxpayer?

    Asking for a friend.

  • Haha yes it actually is a legitimate tax-deductible expense.

    Any premium plan subscriptions to TaxFox are 100% tax-deductible.

    The ATO says:

    "You can claim a deduction for expenses you incur in managing your own tax affairs"

    "Expenses relating to preparing and lodging your tax return and activity statements include the costs of:
    purchasing software to allow the completion and lodgement of your tax return. You must apportion the cost of the software if you also used it for other purposes."

    Cheers =)
