It's confirmed it has smr inside, and all 2.5 inch WD drives have distinctive USB interface therefore are not shuckable, not worth the money, even getting a shuckable seagate 5tb smr portable for around $150 is better than this. So even if you use only for media, it's so bad you wouldn't have been think of until you own one of them (me included). Can you imagine the writting speed for the same video files dropped to 30MB~50MB/s while cmr is stabling at 200MB/s for a desktop drive? Personally only if SMR drives are priced at half the price of cmr drives I would consider smr drives.

    • Guys, give this man an upvote for his insights before making a buying decision.

    • so this is no good for game store and media then?

For READING media files and storing games you don't play regularily, should be ok.

        • which drive would you recommend for fast write and read files? ssd is way too much, I don't spend much hours on games, just store then play occasionally

          • +2

@BlackorRed: I only use an SSD to run games, others I just download whenever I want to play, or you can buy another cheap HDD for solely storage. Game files are not that important, you can even buy second hand cheap drives, for me those "action movies" are important cos some are nowhere to be found or you have to pay someone to get them back.

@BlackorRed: For what it’s worth the Xbox One X internal drives SMR also. I would imagine games are predominately read only and should be ok still for the most part.

If you do want a CMR drive then probably look at the Western Digital external desktop drives. They’ll need their own power supply but.

      • I bought this 4TB WD Elements drive for $89 last month. Works great with my Xbox One. I am not a pro gamer though. This drive was also recommended by TomsGuide. Also read somewhere that the specialised gaming drives have nothing special in them, and are not worth the extra money.

That is the issue, SMR should be clearly labeled and sold for half the price. Sure they have their uses but not for similar prices as standard drives.

      • But its a WD BLACK, their top of the range performance drives, surely they wouldn't put a garbage SMR drive inside. Would they?

        /s

        • Better go for 12TB desktop with ultrastar CMR inside.

Given that this is advertised and sold as an Xbox One game drive, I honestly don't think there's an issue with it being SMR - connected to an Xbox, it will be used mostly for reads, with sequential writes every now and then. SMR's real weakness, random write, shouldn't be exposed in this use case. Even if sequential writes are a paltry 30MB/s, I still don't think there's a big problem - how many people are downloading Xbox games at over 250Mbps?

All that said, CMR is obviously the better performing technology right now, and a SMR drive like this would be painful to use for general media storage hooked up to a PC.
Make sure to know what your usage demands, and buy the appropriate product for it. Nothing wrong with buying SMR and saving money if you'll be using it in such a way that SMR and CMR will perform similarly.

    • Hi, is there any large storage 2.5 inch portable drive with CMR at the moment? please advise, as i am looking to buy one.

  • not free shipping

      Prime free shipping

  • I know it says Xbox, but is there anyway to make it PS4 compatible?

    • +2

All drives are compatible with consoles, even a normal no brand drive.

      • Thanks for the clear explanation.

    • yes, you can select option for PC, PS4 but it is the same drive (just different with logo for Xbox)

  • It’s black. It must be fast?

    • No. You must be thinking of the red one.

  • The 12TB one is much better in terms of performance & price.

    • That's a 3.5" desktop drive and needs a power adapter. This is a 2.5" USB powered drive!

    • That pricing is expired. They’re also a fair bit more expensive so they may have been better from a TB/$ perspective, if you don’t need more than 5TB then you’re paying more for something you might not use.

WD have some 6TB in the sub $200 bracket that might be a closer comparison. No included GamePass but which is worth a bit.
